I Have live here in Oman for nearly 40 Years and I have seen the remarkable transformation from desert to a modern country without selling its soul. Great Man !!!!! RIP XXX
When I spent 4 months working in Oman in 2014 I had the pleasure of exploring the muscat region. I was amazed at how warm local people were towards me when I left the tourist areas and visited smaller places. They were not interested in getting me to spend money, they were more interested in my life and if I had ever met the queen (they are big fans). The people seemed to have a genuine affection for the Sultan. His picture was everywhere and his influence was evident. From the new highways he built, to the religious buildings, stadiums, museums, concert halls, hospitals etc etc. His policies literally built their country. They had one paved road before his rule. The western influence was evident but not overwhelming. It was still very clear you were in a Middle Eastern country. I never once felt unsafe. Even when I was the single white man in a crowd of thousands at a market. If you dress conservatively, great people in Arabic if you can (a simple Salam will do), and act respectfully it’s a delightful place to visit. I would return in a heartbeat. The new sultan has big shoes to fill. But if he stays the path that has been laid for him Oman will continue to go from strength to strength. Peace be upon you all.
