Battletoads Arcade is a coin-operated, scrolling beat 'em up arcade game. Up to three players, as the Battletoads (Rash, Pimple, and Zitz), punch and kick oncoming enemies through six levels to save their alternate universe from the Dark Queen. Arcade was the first Battletoads game to feature three-player cooperative multiplayer. Players control their characters with eight-directional joysticks and two buttons (attack and jump). Characters can run if the player pushes the joystick twice in the same direction. The Toads vary in fighting style: Rash is nimble, Pimple is burly, and Zitz is a balance of the two. As customary for the series, the Toads can knock enemies off-screen such that they appear to fly towards the players, breaking the fourth wall. The Toads can also eat flies to regenerate health. Each Toad has its own signature exaggerated power and attack, in which their limbs turn into objects such as axes and drills. Enemies include aliens, mutant rodents, and snowmen. Each level has a unique theme, such as a "Christmas grotto", and a boss fight finale. Some bosses, such as General Slaughter, return from previous games. Some levels differ in presentation and gameplay. Some levels are Double Dragon-style 2.5D brawlers, while others are strictly two-dimensional. In one level, the Toads wear jetpacks and descend a tunnel, and in the final level, the Toads shoot enemies from a vehicle. Players can also destroy a spaceship in a Street Fighter II-style bonus stage. Battletoads Arcade is displayed in standard definition raster graphics in horizontal orientation with either mono or stereo sound within an upright arcade cabinet. Rare took greater liberties with violence and gore in Battletoads Arcade since the product was not destined for home consoles. It was Rare's first game to use the 3D graphics technology later implemented in Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. Despite being finished, the game remained unreleased "for ages", according to Rare's George Andreas, who had worked on the game. Although the game playtested and sold well and appeared financially viable, the publisher hesitated to release it. The game proved unsuccessful in the arcades, Rare had finished and tested handheld Game Boy port of Battletoads Arcade, but it was callenced following the arcade's game poor sales. A Super NES port was also planned and canceled, likely due to the arcade game's mediocre reception. Rare's Brendan Gunn had worked on the port and said that the team had nearly finished the first level before the project was scrapped. He figured that the decision may have been linked to mediocre sales but was not sure. Super Battletoads, as the arcade game was also known, was the planned title for the two ports. received its first console release when it was emulated for the Xbox One as part of the 2015 Rare Replay compilation of 30 games from Rare's 30-year history. In the Rare Replay version, additional features include a setting for unlimited continues, the ability to "rewind" time (and replay a section), and the opportunity to save game progress at any time. Battletoads Arcade's poor performance led to a 26-year franchise hiatus that ended with the 2020 series reboot. In the mid-2000s, Rare began to plan a possible sequel but ultimately decided that there was no original direction for the game apart from its past and did not want to repeat the failed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. The arcade game's failure also led Rare to set low expectations for future arcade releases. Battletoads Arcade later influenced the cooperative play mode in the 2011 Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Kotaku recognized Battletoads Arcade among the 16-bit era beat 'em ups with the best graphics. This game makes the arcade versions of TMNT: Turtles in Time and The Simpsons Arcade game look like a fair and well-balanced game in comparision. The arcade games of Konami and Sega and praised its humor, combat, and character. They added that Battletoads Arcade was a swan song for the series, with numerous references to moments and levels from previous games. For example, the first stage atop the Dark Queen's ship was similar to the opening of Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team and the jetpack level was reminiscent of the "Wookie Hole" level in the original Battletoads. They called its console cancellation "a tragedy".
After you kill an enemy with the 3 punches and the "Fatality" while is on the ground, there is one animation of the character celebrating. Zitz is my favorite 😂 😂
Give Rareware and Microsoft Studios some time, they might be planning something huge... I envision a chaotic blood soaked sandbox beat 'em up, with a ridiculous combo system akin to KI 2014. The game would be have insane stage gimmicks and platforming, but balance it out with enough action to keep you coming back for more. And not to mention, I see the toads finishing their combos with gruesome finishing moves (fatalities, if you will...) that reward you for pulling them off (Instant life replinishment, ect.) Without question, it would be an M-Rated game for the extreme amount of violence, carnage, and gore. And I also see Rareware paying homage to the classic games by including difficulty settings like "RETRO-HARD" or "VERY-FUCKING-HARD" (Yes, I see this game using lots of strong language as well, CAUSE FUCK YOU, THAT'S WHY! XD). Why make the game so hard that's almost unplayable? Offer the hardcore veteran players that ultimate challenge, to remind them what it means to be called "NES-Hard". But once you pull it off, just hearing that epic jingle play... (RARE ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - "UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!" - Beat the game on "RETRO-HARD".) Battletoads on Xbox One... *ONLY ON XBOX ONE!*

They seem impressive, and for some voices played, it seems like the characters came from one voice actor, but with different pitches and speeds applied for each individual. Zitz is the normal voice from the actor. Rash is the higher pitch but slightly faster. Pimple is lower pitch and slightly slower. It becomes more apparent when several attacks come at the same time or when more than one toad gets crushed simultaneously.

Not anymore sadly
The 2020 remastered version should had the shredders Revenge art style
Even I could tell this game was ahead of its time. I can’t wait to play it on Arcade1up.
After you kill an enemy with the 3 punches and the "Fatality" while is on the ground, there is one animation of the character celebrating. Zitz is my favorite 😂 😂
Zitz have the best kill animations imo
They beat up the bad guys so brutally I almost feel sorry for them.
Nah.
Boy: Can I go to to the arcade?
Mom: Ok, only play sweety.
Boy: *Pulls out his purse of infinite quarters with a cunning grin*.
good child hood moments that kids now a dayz will never knw
Big horns and big boots and big fists 🔥🔥🔥 am down for a remaster of battletoads🙏🙏🙏🙏
The last official battletoads game, will they ever make a proper return?
...
and yes, I know they are back on Killer Instinct and Shovel Knight.
And not to mention, I see the toads finishing their combos with gruesome finishing moves (fatalities, if you will...) that reward you for pulling them off (Instant life replinishment, ect.)
Without question, it would be an M-Rated game for the extreme amount of violence, carnage, and gore.
(RARE ACHIEVEMENT UNLOCKED - "UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE!!" - Beat the game on "RETRO-HARD".)
Battletoads on Xbox One... *ONLY ON XBOX ONE!*
THE OFFICIAL TBONE2004
seeing what microsoft did with banjo-kazooie and conker, I very much doubt that will happen
Invidente7
In 2019 they will.
And they are back in the worst way possible
@@mankeno3037 A "Toned Down cartoon" beat-em-up. Had the other developers consulted with Rare and its original creators about the newest entry?
I only beat it when my creepy uncle gave me enough quarters. He had his uses. Who was the user, and who was the used?
Это каким надо быть художником игр, чтобы увидев это, произвести на свет новых лягушек рисовкой картумнетворк
Сомневаюсь, что эти недохудожники вообще знали про эту версию
Yikes, I can't believe this had blood.
Well, this is a violent game. Battletoads isn't made for kids.
Hey just came watching this 90s arcade and I like it better than the 2020 Battletoads. That actually makes me wanna play it. I wish the company could've done better and make it more like THIS.
Why isn't the new game this cool?
The Dark Queen is 6 feet tall but 126 lbs? Dang, she is severely underweight.
@@anthonymccall3064 She is the Queen of Lower Back Pain.
Supermodel material...
@@anthonymccall3064 They're fakes.
@@angrytheclown801 😂
What if they made a ninja turtle arcade game like this in the old days
All they need to do is take this game, add in speeder bikes and snakes platform and other variety of minigames and u literally will have the best BT game ever. They drop the ball with the new one
Yeah, I could never get passed the snake boss at the arcades. Those one hit kills are super cheap! Must have wasted like $15 dollars getting stuck there and never beat it because of it
The Sprites for rash, and Pimple are quite similar to Battletoads in battlemaniacs for the snes. i like them both. even though i am 15.
Some of their movements are reused sprites yeah from battlemaniacs but in better quality
@@marcoantonioarmijomedrano4302
This game has a very mysterious developmental story behind it, but it’s speculated that they worked on this right after the release of the NES original, EA just sat on it for two years and let the game flop.
Dark Queen is one of the hottest villains :3
This Game is a Work of Art
Yeah I watched it to the end. Was awesome! Shame I couldn't play it in my country.
"Stumpin time!!!"
Rash. The small, quick agile one
Pimple. The big, slow but powerful one.
Zits. The best or both worlds with speed and power.
This is what I expected Battlemaniacs to be, a straight beat em up... Then I got to level 3 and no further. I'll have to try this someday.
This would've been a great successor to Battlemaniacs on the SNES!
TMNT , battle toads, street sharks, and swat Kat's should team up in a game like this.
VirusEffect X
All those plus Biker Mice from Mars, Mighty Ducks, Sonic...
Have you seen the game Sonic Adventure Revolution?
This should be Battletoads on NES.
This is on Rare Replay. I feel bad for anyone that doesn't get to check out that collection. I would almost say it's worth having an Xbox One for alone.
19:47 Street Fighter Bonus Stage cameo
The only thing bad about this game:
It's as incomplete as Super Double Dragon.
Honestly I think battletoads 2020 is good in it’s own thing
So much cooler than the reboot
Six years ago of this gameplay and the nuts grab in 11:37 still really hilarious XD
I remember playing this at my local walmart. Good times
Great time work guys you really backed each other especially fighting Hannah.
I love level 3 only for the continuous blows to the testicles that they give to the wolves XD
The newer battletoads just had to flop hard. Why can’t it be like this?
hey! did you know that the arcade isn't the first time that battletoads had blood?
in battletoads in battlemaniacs, when pimple gets hit in the second stage, you might see blood coming out of his face, oh and in stage 5, when he gets sawed, you see some gore of his body parts being cut off.
The Battletoads' voices are PERFECT.
[EDIT] Old comment cringe right here
They seem impressive, and for some voices played, it seems like the characters came from one voice actor, but with different pitches and speeds applied for each individual.
Zitz is the normal voice from the actor.
Rash is the higher pitch but slightly faster.
Pimple is lower pitch and slightly slower.
It becomes more apparent when several attacks come at the same time or when more than one toad gets crushed simultaneously.
Better than the animated series.
I'd like to take a moment; to express my appreciation for the fact, that this very game, is on Rare Replay... at least for Xbox - I'll take it
