The fact that one of the greatest guitarists the world has ever seen had to play Holiday Inn lounges tells you a lot about the music industry.

A lot was due to Danny. He hated being away from home, would often not call back on jobs that would've netted him big money and treated music as a hobby so he could restore his trucks.I don't blame him tbh and as for people almost crying because he's not as well known as he should be,well that suits me too.People who know greatness get it.Besides, would you really want his music/chops used on RUclips shorts by girls with big tits and zero talent? Pearls before swine.

Thank you for posting. As a DC native, a guitarist friend of mine said. We're gonna go see this amazing guitar player. And I'm so glad. I was about 3 feet away from Danny, and he was amazing. When I watch these videos. I just start laughing at how incredible he is. It's absurd in a good, crazy way.

Gatton was flat out bad ass. While Joe Pass was an incredible jazz virtuoso (and others) I believe Danny took it to another level. This is hard work and too, a God gifted talent for sure. Shame more people didn't realize how special he was. Maybe he didn't even know the extent of his awesomness.

Danny Gatton’s greatest strengths were mastery of the Telecaster and being capable of playing a variety of genres convincingly, neither of which he’s doing here. I also imagine he’d have been the first to say he’s not a chord melody master or solo jazz player on the level of Joe friggin’ Pass. I loved Danny Gatton but comments like this almost do him a disservice.

I think Danny knew his awesomeness, but his ego was secure and he was just very matter of fact about it. Based on the date of this recording, this performance was shortly after Danny came out after him taking a break of a couple of years after he injured his hand working on a car. This isn’t his strongest jazz work. Check out his recording with Joey DeFrancesco for some really hot playing.

This is a rare view of Danny and deserves wider recognition. Nerfnarf uploaded a couple of the songs and was kind enough to send me the whole gig. Danny was one of the most versatile guitarists of this era, and it's a treat (for me, at least :D) to share it with so many others.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. It's incredible - a talent like that playing at the Holiday Inn. And the people in the audience probably just thought "hey, this guy is pretty good."
When I first heard of Danny, I was doing a gig in Manhattan and some random guy came up to me at the bar and said "You're a guitarist. Have you ever heard of Danny Gatton?" I said no, and he replied "I'm a music critic for the Village Voice. Leave my your number and I'll comp you the next time he's in town."
I didn't think much of it until a couple of weeks later when I got a message: "Danny's at the Cat Club tonight. You're comped, just tell them your name."
What the hell. I went, and the place was packed - for the first band. They went off, the place emptied out, and I thought "Gee, I guess he doesn't have much of a following." I ordered a beer, turning my back to the room. Turned around less than five minutes later, and the room was packed.
    With guitarists.
Every one had long hair, skinny, just that look. The band came on, without Danny. They played a bit, then he came out, and started playing. I looked around, and literally everyone had the same look.
Their mouths were open. Like, EVERYBODY.
I went to the merch table and bought two albums, even though I couldn't really afford it.
His loss ranks with any of the truly greats - Parker, Hendrix, Montgomery, Bix, name it. It's fantastic that you have this and shared it.

    Thanks for posting this!
In HS, my guitar teacher used to quietly rave about Danny Gatton, but I was too young to see him in the clubs. One lesson, my teacher told me Danny had gotten a 'Champagne Brunch' gig at a Holiday Inn and I should make every effort to see one of his idols. I'm assuming it was around the time of this date.
My teacher told me he'd be playing Jazz standards and it would be pretty low-key compared to his blistering club dates. He said I'd have to jump on it, because the gig might not last. I begged my parents to take me, which they finally did. I had just a cursory understanding of Jazz at the time, so I could only appreciate the performance so much. The crowd was vaguely interested (so seemed Danny), but I was mesmerized. It was obvious that Danny could do anything he wanted with the guitar and I remember being thoroughly amused when he stuck the "Leave it to Beaver" theme in a solo. I imagined he was calling out the little pencil-necked geek raptly absorbing a local living legend.
Finding YT videos of Danny a few years ago got me really inspired to dig in deeper to learning guitar, especially jazz, and I'm thrilled to be able to enjoy a performance from that same time with more educated ears. I wish I'd met him but he immediately disappeared like the Lone Ranger. RIP D. Gatton.

    • @Barabyk
      @Barabyk 7 лет назад +2

+Dean Sanders - you're absolutely right. General public tends to mistake CAN with WANT - in case of Danny and other great players is not whether they can play, but what they choose as their means of expression. This set shows how great player fits into situation. Yes, he could blast like crazy, play with beer bottle, or whatever other tricks in his bag. Would it make any sense for Holiday Inn lounge gig? Not necessarily. Still brilliant and intriguing playing.

One of my guitar buddies was friends with Gatton and used to hear him every night at a place near his apartment. One night Danny's guitar failed and he asked my buddy to go get his. So, Danny took his guitar and made it sound phenomenal with tonalities and audio capabilities he had never heard come out of it before, or since. This video confirms what my friend maintained; Danny Gatton could take any guitar and make it sound like him. Normally you associate him as one of the great telemasters, but clearly he could achieve a vast variety of tones and virtuosity no matter the brand, though I have to say, his modifications and use of the Telecaster is a benchmark in the annals of telewacking, but here we witness his superb mastery of the hardest of all genres to play authentically, jazz! Yeah man, thanks for posting!

What a treat to hear the incomparable Danny Gatton playing jazz in a small group setting! In a piano/organ-less group like this, thin and not full-enough sound is sometimes a problem. But not with Danny, who plays chorus after chorus of interesting, hip and utterly creative comps, fills, riffs and musical ideas, pretty much on demand and non-stop. Also great to hear DG playing on his jazz box rather than his usual Telecaster. It's a real shame Danny and the group didn't get recorded more often, because they sound great together.

Just in case anyone doesn't know, you can buy an expanded version of Danny's great 1978 live jazz album "Redneck Jazz Explosion" from bandcamp. It's a quartet with Buddy Emmons on pedal steel, plus bass and drums. It's hard to pick a favorite live Gatton album ("Funhouse" is certainly a contender as well), but "Redneck Jazz Explosion" really captures something special, and you get to hear him tackle a few jazz standards that don't appear elsewhere, like Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring", Horace Silver's "Song for My Father", and Sonny Rollins' "Sonnymoon for Two".

I have never been so proud as I was that day, Danny remembered some power chord, punk from Falls Church.

It’s all there but it’s funny how the old camcorders turn a colour recording into black and white. The sound is quite good considering that technology.

How do you think he became one of the "greatest" guitar players in the world? By turning down a six day a week gig? This gig was a Sunday, so maybe a seven day a week gig. These guys did deserved to be playing in front of a much larger audience. Forty or fifty people for sure, in a Holiday Inn. If they were playing in front of a thousand people it would be because they were selling out. I don't think Danny Gatton ever sold out. This is damn good music.

And the paper manufacturer's rep at the Holiday Inn was expecting Murph & the Magic Tones.

The tune at 1:00 is 'A Smoo-ooth One' , which I think is a Benny Goodman piece from the time Charlie Christian was with him. A million thanks for sharing these recordings of Danny Gatton, the sheer width height and depth of his music just keeps growing as these recordings emerge

Yuno Gasai I'm virtually positive it's "One for Lenny" but will dig through the archives (a tough job, but _someone_ has to do it...) to confirm. Meanwhile, you can hear "Linus and Lucy" at Danny Gatton at Bridgeton, PA 5/22/93 as the start of one of his extended medleys.

Sorry this is so late. I got all of them from RUclips, but some of the source videos have since vanished. I cobbled them together (instead of keeping them as single songs) and uploaded them. BTW, do a YT search on Danny Gatton Warren K and you'll find about 20 _hours_ of live DG videos. Fantastic stuff

Do this twangy tele picker really has the licks in jazz. That's really diverse. Oh by the way , you can't find this kinda live music. Rare exception. I'm really impressed with Danny. Should have known about years ago. Decades.

Look out -- here's your crash course! Go to RUclips and search on "Danny Gatton". Step 1: add wgbader to the search. Step 2: Change wgbader to "Warren K" and repeat. Step 3: Change "Warren K" to "Mark Tryon" and repeat. You'll find false hits so keep scrolling. Step 4: Go to www.discogs.com/artist/400732-Danny-Gatton and search Amazon for his catalog. Many are on RUclips also. Step 5: Play everything loud! BTW, there are lots of short excerpts to hunt for.

In the alphabet section near the left click "d" then scroll down to the dannygatton section (he alphabetizes on the first name). You'll find a boatload of live Danny Gatton shows along with setlists. You can download them with Firefox, not Google Chrome. You can keyword search by anything that's on the setlists, including personnel, song titles, venues, instruments, etc. Experiment with it. BTW, if you like Duane Allman, there are about 60 Duane-era ABB shows.
