    As a whole food plant based vegan I understand this philosophy completely - I actually used to teach it. But there is a huge hole in this whole line of thinking. For starters many people in our program went whole food vegan & did not see the results others did. While the doctors in the program felt they were lying and cheating, I knew from personal experience it wasn't working for me either. I know the science so I wasn't going back to animal products and I did have to add salt back into my diet because my sodium levels actually came up below normal and I added nuts & seeds in because my nerves were frayed but still, I was not having miraculous results as others were. After 4 years of research I think I'm on to a big part of the problem. It is the bio-engineered foods and chemicals they are dousing our crops with. Why the sudden societal shifts? Why the sudden & rapid weight gain? Why the increase in diabetes, heart disease etc? Not because people were eating meat or frying food. My people are from southern USA. They fried everything! Tomatoes, okra, potatoes, pork chops, chicken, fish, cornmeal... Everything tossed in flour & dipped in fat. Yet, I am the first generation to show signs of obesity or diabetes - No history of type 2 diabetes found in 3 generations before me! My ancestors were all lean, healthy, long living. In my life we created synthetic foods like cool whip & margarine, we injected animals with drugs, boiled the milk, irradiated potatoes, gassed bananas, added chemicals to the water supply, used metal amalgam filling, developed immunizations, created chemicals to pour on foods as they grew & more chemicals to add to make them shelf stable. There have been vast changes in recent decades that people don't take into consideration because it's not as easy as telling people to cut fat & increase veggies. While those things are good they do not fully address the issues of the increase of obesity & disease in this age. If we are to resolve the problems we must widen our perspective. Dementia, immuno disorders, autism rates... loads of new problems in recent decades. And we can eat all the veggies in the world but if they are full of poison... ? If your drinking water is full of poison - increased hydration isn't going to cut it. It is not as simple as you and Novick are making it out to be. When people go plant based vegan & struggle... they go back to the old SAD... and guess what? Not much change for them either way - because the causes of their physical imbalances are in the contaminants in the general food supply, in the water & in the plastic bottles we tote our spring water in. Yes, plant based vegan helps people get healthier but it will not fully resolve the obesity & health crisis of today because most of these problems are political & out of our hands. Not everyone can grow their own, not everyone can access a spring head, not everyone can move out of the EMF field of cell towers... While I support all things plant based, I strongly disagree with this philosophy on the "cause" of obesity & disease in recent decades. I do respect you & enjoy your videos and wanted to share this with you to consider and research yourself.

    I have (almost) eliminated added fat form my diet the past 3 weeks. There's a tiny bit of oil added to my favorite sourdough bread, but I don't eat that every day. The result is that I've lost 4,4kg (10 lbs). I was just slightly overweight with a BMI of 25,9. I changed my diet because of some digestive problems which did get better from day one. The weight loss is just a bonus and not a bad one as the summer is rolling in.

    I also wonder if/how the elimination of recess and physical education programs from the public schools, which also paralleled these food trends, was a contributing factor? In elementary school we had 2 recesses per day, plus PE and we grew up in the American South eating lots of really bad stuff...and very few of us were obese. I noticed that once the schools started getting rid of those programs the obesity levels of the kids went up. Not saying it's a causal factor, but I suspect it's a corelation. Happened during the same period as the uptick in Jeff's charts.

    Thanks for helping to simplify this for folks who may be confused about all of the misinformation out there. It isn't how much we eat. Rather, it is what we are choosing to eat. Learn how to make the right choices and the problem solved itself.

    I love that you're putting out truth for people. I was just watching a Joe Rogan podcast clip a few minutes ago and one of his guests was going on about how carbs have been the reason for the obesity epidemic, and then she was giving praise to low-carb this and keto that... It was funny because the carbs she mentioned were things like cookies and white pasta. She wasn't saying "everyone got obese from eating too many beans, brown rice, and vegetables (all carbohydrates)"... But that's the message the public hears. Potatoes are bad. Rice is bad. Carbs are bad. There is so much difference between a donut that is deep fried and covered in sugar and fat or a plain sweet potato. BUT CARBS MAKE YOU FAT! must mean they are all the same. Thank you Dillon for continuing to explain this stuff. I have fallen victim to the whole keto/low-carb thing so many times and it's refreshing to see someone who is slender and eats a whole lot of plant foods say that carbs are good and oil is bad. Keep pushing this message and hopefully it continues to be heard by many. You've already had a huge impact on my life over the last 6 months or so, and now I'm trying to live by example for my family and friends who are still stuck eating poison while wishing they could just lose the weight and be healthy.

    2:04 Hahaha. People most of the time stare at me when they see how much food I eat and how lean I am, and think I must have some crazy fast metabolism that allows me not to get fat from all that, but the truth is that while a whole foods diet indeed does increase ones energy expenditure it is mostly and simply the caloric and nutritional composition of the food I stuff my face with.

    So true. I simply listen to Dr. McDougall. I dont even worry about trying to eat more non starchy vegetables to lose weight. I eat tons of starches every day with fruits and vegetables sometimes all the way up till bed time, and Im still losing weight at a decent pace. Ill even allow myself an occasional table spoon of natural peanut butter on a piece of Ezekiel bread and this doesnt mess me up either. I feel awesome and have lost 55 lbs and still going.

    Comparing sugar and fats over the 50 years on USDA charts, it has shown a steady increase in fats over that period to 2012 and a rise in sugars until mid to late 90's then a slow decrease.This decrease was attributed to the arrival of the biggest con of modern times...bottled water. If you drink a bottle of bottled water when thirsty, you're less likely to want a Coke. The fat rise was basically saturated fat being taken over by mono and poly.....but as the good Doc says, "The fat you eat is the fat you wear"

    I remember the 60s and 70s. People sat down and ate meals with their families and that was the only time they ate. Not much snacking. Grazing was not a thing. Not much late night eating. Not much fast food. And stores were not open at all hours. People rarely worked late at night so they got better sleep. People did not work long hours or bring work home much. Convenience stores were not prevalent. People did not buy junk food when they got gas. Gas stations did not sell junk food. And children played outside when they weren't at school. Video games and cell phones and computers did not exist. Children played outdoors for hours. And we had P.E. and recess every day at school. And not much homework. And we had chores. Mowing the lawn. Washing the car. So we were much more active than modern children.

    "Genetics loads the gun, but lifestyle pulls the trigger." Even though I have most of those predispositions; add to that an addictive nature... but I have to do my part. I look at it this way. Because I have those predispositions, I need to be even more diligent, if I want to be successful in maintaining good health... Which includes a healthy weight. When I remember what you just said, It becomes, once again, simple. I like the message clear and simple... like that! So very cool.

    Thank you, Dillon, for another great video. Keep up the good work. It would be nice to inform viewers about resistant starches and beans are on top of the list. Dr. Fuhrman has mentioned that in his talks. They are high in calories and make one feel full and stay full for a long time as the sugars break down gradually, but all the calories are not absorbed. Also, beans and rice make a complete protein with all the essential amino acids. With love and many blessings from Florida.

    I'm a child of 70s and whenever we rewatch old movies or tv shows from that era, it's striking about how few obese people there were! Thanks for the concise info about the real culprits of the epidemic that we've all noticed but not really understood!!

      Right? When I went to school, no kid was obese. We had one girl in our class who was obese and people made fun of her (not me thank goodness) because she was the odd one by being obese. Now, it’s so much more common to see overweight kids.

    thanks i transitioned to vegan 8 month ago ran my first half and another full marathon after, I'm still learning and now I am in the processes to eliminate oils, sugars, and processed foods..the last one is the hardest thing to do, harder than saying Adios to animals... I was so used to eat is processed foods, now i am actually beginning to see improvement ...keeping it whole food plant base is an absolutely life style change...thanks for the videos!!

      Thank you for sharing. I agree that kicking junk is harder than kicking animal products. And I think it’s going to be that way for many vegans because it’s so easy to be vegan AND constantly pleasured by food these days. The vegan food industry is making some pretty amazing products, and if it turns people vegan sooner then ok fine. I just want people to know the truth so they can make the best decision for them, wherever they are.

    Jeff is must read / listen. His analysis of 'fancy salts' (ie how much salt you would need to get useful amounts of other minerals) is tremendous. Gives insight into the deceit and marketing involved in foods, especially 'superfoods'.

    Simplistics way of analysing the food. There is no calory counter in your body and you dont take in acount the hormonal response which is the most important factor of gaining weight We are not adapted to deal with hightly processed food (sugar, diet food, low fat food, flour, white rice…). Insuline resistance is what trigger your craving and your storage high carbs food is the main culprite (that include sugar and any food that mimics sugar ). Avoid those foods they are poisons. Dont avoid fat, et ess often (you're not obliged to eat three times a day or even every day) bann the snacks and most of the carbs and you ll get fine without starving. Fat restriction diet makes you get fatter because the hormonal response of your body is storage and hunger.

    Wait, insulin is the number one culprit of weight gain. Fat, does not stimulate a insulin spike so to speak. I know the stats are there but still not sure how this goes together. What’s spikes insulin? Sugar/carbs (and protein). Does Jeff ever in his videos address insulin?

    I've been WFPB for 2 years now, very low fat, mostly starch, fruits and vegetables (including cereals and stuff like that, but no processed junk vegan food), 25, lean, 4 pack showing, 1m83cm height, 74kgs, sedentary job, 1 hour exercise every day). Eat like an elephant, but there is one food that i cannot and WILL NOT eliminate wich is bread (all types including white) i just make sure it's just flour, water, yeast and salt. I am a BIG bread person...
