Yes, Ford does say that. However, I don’t believe that it’s an actual indication of wear on the engine. Ford came up with that spec so that fleet managers knew when to properly change the oil. Because even if the car is only driven a few thousand miles, the oil is still getting worn out as the engine is idling. Still higher idle hours, can mean issues for certain engines. This car is about average with 8000-ish total engine hours and only 4600 idle hours. That’s about the average range for used cop cars. Idle hours conversion should be listed within that owner's manual that you found in the glove box. My 2008 Ford Police Interceptor (Crown Vic P71) says each idle hour equals 33 miles which works out to 289,674 miles in your case (8778 x 33 = 289,674).
Idle hours are 4633, and the other mileage was about 155k, using the 33 miles per idle hour thing that comes out to about 308126 miles, really high for a turbo V6. But cop maintenance appears to treated it well so far and I expect it'll keep going for a long time. It just shows exactly how long many cars will last with proper maintenance.
WOW ! Now that's what I call a steal of a deal Randy. You don't need a bunch of cars with that pursuit cruiser in your stable of vehicles. Nice buy on that one !
Not really. Turbos got a lot of miles, water pump, engine, and transmission have a lot of miles. I bet that will be in need of some major repair bills soon. Good luck. There is a reason police departments are phasing these out and ford no longer making them. I sold mine at 80k before shtf.
There's usually a relay switch in the trunk or under the hood. It can be red or yellow and if you flip it, it should turn all the lights/siren/PA equipment on. It's meant to be turned off when parked for a while to save the battery.
That’s my car that I traded in a couple months ago. If you want the siren/air horn to work there’s a breaker under the hood on the battery. As for the normal horn, you just need the red switch on the siren controller turned off and it will work. I got it from a dealership in Ohio after a local department traded it in around 110k. I still have the cage for the back if you’re interested.
Good to meet you! I had a blast with this one. I ended up getting the siren and lights to work in another video. This car is actually being traded for a foxbody in a few days but I appreciate you leaving a comment.
Did you figure out the trick for putting it into pursuit mode? (At 55 hard brake tap then punch it) - the car spins to redline and stays downshifted allowing you to use all of the ~360 odd hp to full affect.
Change the PTU fluid and monitor the weephole for the waterpump. Any orange drips around the alternator/ Ac compressor usually mean the waterpump is leaking. You can easily get 440hp with a high octane tune with factory turbos.
Horn works through the police panel, get the panel reconnected or reconnect the horn bypassing the panel. Nice catch, watch the coolant level though, water pump failures can be a issue. The lack of front marker lights tips everyone off at night, same thing with the Crown Victoria. SEL was the second level, SE, SEL, Limited and the SHO.
The horn is wired through the light and siren control box, it looks like the power is disconnected to it. Just lift it out and make sure power is supplied to it and the sound and PA should work right out of the gate. The lights may also work depending on if the lights that were installed in the actual car aside from the light bar are still there, so just be careful with turning them on in public. You can actuate the regular horn when the box has power and the switch is OFF by pressing the wheel. You can actuate the police horn with the wheel when the Whelen box is ON and by also pressing the horn button on the box. Switching between MAN 1 and 2 will change the MAN button from the siren to the horn depending on which one you have selected. Have fun!
I just got my 2017 AWD 3.5L6cyl turbo FPIS and I am absolutely in love. Mine had 87K with only 770 idle hours for 10k. Only thing I’m not excited about is the no aux input on stereo but have figured out I am going to end up getting a Bluetooth amp and bypass the factory head unit completely. I am thrilled with mine and hope you are too!!
I love my 17 Taurus SHO. I’d love to have one of those.. they only made the Twin Turbos in AWD. I’ve always said I’d take my SHO over any German fast car. They are great cruisers!
Stock they run mid 13s. Tune and 3bar map puts them in the 12s. With a few others goodies 11s are possible. 2 people have got into the 10s but they were all stripped ad running on the brink of destruction.
1. This makes up for the MiEV. You should keep this one and mod it. It’s amazing what can be done with that engine to get outputs of 500-600hp. Nice work!
Looks good ! I had two Taurus Interceptors AWD and the PTU’s went on both. Throw it up on the lift to see if it’s sweating, it’s about $1800 from Ford for a new PTU
Insane car bro! probably 365hp with a 0-60 of 5.8 ..plenty fast and looks positively Sinister and Badass...I'd have been thrilled to have gotten that for 5 grand!
Congratulations "officer Randy" That's a cool ride I wish to own once I have the funds, excellent car firsthand information from an acquaintance that owns one currently
Randy,I love the car. Hopefully you can get the siren to work and any strobes it may have. My 2011 CVPI (Kentucky State Patrol admin car)was stripped of everything except the spotlight. Wires were cut to make sure you would have a hard time trying to reinstall anything! Got mine at 168k with 3200 or so idle hours. I've been finding out the "cop effect' is real even with an old Crown Vic!
The "cop effect" isn't just limited to Crown Vics with spotlights either. My parents have a spruce green 2004 Grand Marquis with no exterior modifications except the damage where the previous owner smacked a tree. It's obviously not a cop car in daylight, but at night cars will fly up behind it and then drop back for a while thinking it is. People from Tennessee know that the dark blue plate is civilian, the rest of the country doesn't.

You're like a kid at Christmas with that Taurus Interceptor! What a great find! You always have the best toys. 👍🇺🇸😎 Good idea filming in the evening when it's cooler. Still no sign of the Florida Taurus SHO?
I'm a responder living in PA. Most of these twin turbo's were used by the PA State Police. So many of those hours were at idle while observing traffic. Enjoy your new ride!👍
Bad thing about AWD , you can’t just replace 2 tires or one tire , you have to replace all 4 or that car won’t drive right at all , nice car though , my wife has the 2013 SHO twin turbo , badass car !
Nice snag on that one. I don't think those cars in PI form ever came with HIDs (though the US-based SHOs did), but 9012 halogens in the headlights (and the stock lighting on the civilian/non SHO and PI were terrible). Might be worth double checking the headlight install, even if aftermarket it seems like the bulbs were not installed/angled correctly in the socket. But, I'm sure you'll catch that and other issues when you do your mechanical review. Enjoy the car--I know I've been enjoying the content!
They have Halogen projectors like the 2011-2015 Explorers. They get really bad as the bulbs age. My company had a clapped out 2012 Explorer in our fleet and the headlights were barely visible.
That’s a nice police car Randy. We got them too in our law enforcement department but normally aspirated and not all wheel drive. So you really got a rare one. Hope you’ll keep it
Randy, I'm super envious! I work for a Sheriff's Office who utilizes the N/A versions of these. I'd love to have this to embarrass them with this when you're done with it. #NowAcceptingDonations lol
Looks like you found one hell of a good deal! I have a few observations that may help you out: A) I'm guessing the siren was wired into the horn fuse, so there's a good chance all they did was pull the horn fuse to disable the siren; B) Given the back seat is leather and has power windows that work, I doubt it was meant for ANY type of criminal transport. The child locks are probably the standard lever inside the door jam like in every other car. With that said, this was probably used by the police Chief to tool around in! C) I believe the little toggle button on the center console armrest area (II 0 I) switch is the driver side seat heater! D) The overhead trunk release is likely on a 45 second delay, meaning once you unlock it via the overhead button, you only have 45 seconds to go round back to open it before it locks again. (The SUV interceptors are like that) I think you really lucked out! Can't wait to see a follow-up on this beautiful car!
$5k WELL spent…..police cars are usually well maintained and that things clean. You could easily sell that sucker for double if you have the horn reconnected. My best friend in the world wants that model of yellow Chevy truck more than anything else on the road.
Love the deal. Seems to be perfect, except for the missing horn. And, as you mentioned several times, I can see where other drivers reaction to it could get to be really annoying. Wonder how actual law enforcement would react to its presence?
Per Ford, 1 idle hour equates to 33 miles.. so 4,633 idle hrs x 33mi = 152,889 miles in addition to the 155k on the clock.. so theoretically the car has 308k on it
As a fleet mechanic who's worked for 3 different cities, all of which were exclusively ford products, I can assure you that they do in fact consider it wear. We calculate oil change intervals either by the oil life monitor or odometer readings for light use vehicles, and for the heavy use vehicles(i.e police cars) we change the oil every 30 days because the cars run almost 24/7. My current city garage has a mix of chevy, dodge and ford and they are all treated the same. "Ford Motor Company defines idling as follows: Over 10 minutes per hour of normal driving, frequent low speed operation, and sustained heavy traffic less than 25 mph. It is important to note that idle hours include low speed driving and don't mean that the cruiser is sitting still that entire time. Times that a police cruiser may accumulate idle hours include: 25 mph town road patrols, running radar, having pulled over a vehicle, accident scenes, while an officer is on a call, details, winter operation, and while searching an area via patrol car. All of those activities require either low speed driving or remaining stationary. Ford says that one hour of idle time = approximately 25 miles of driving. One hour of engine time = 33 miles of driving."
You got yourself a pretty cool toy Randy, just be careful not to get into trouble with it. Have fun! 😎👌👍 P.S l'd keep the 40 Chevy for car shows. Just a thought.
Believe it or not I want a SHO. AWD twin turbo v6. The echo boost is bullet proof! The gear box that distributes the power to all wheels is the weak link if you mod the motor over 500hp. You can upgrade the gear box for a few grand. You can easily add 150 hp just by upgrading the plugs, thermostat, mid pipes, air intake and Livermore soft tune! The ultimate sleeper Dad ride! Nice score bro.....
The horn is run thru the siren box. When that box is on - the horn ring controls it. When that siren is turned off - the horn is normal. As mentioned - the siren unit is probably just unplugged.
In my opinion this is the coolest car I've seen you purchase yet I really like this one and I hope it's just things that are unplugged and it all works for you that would be amazing good luck with it sir I wish you the best and maybe a Dyno run lol
I purchased a 9C1 police car way back in the day when they first starting selling them to the public. All the wires for the wig wag lights and sirens were there but they cut them under the hood. An hour and a bunch of butt connectors and everything worked again !!! I think they have to disable that stuff before selling. Should be an easy fix. Awesome car ! Best part about it was driving in the fast lane and watch people scramble to get out of your way.
I’ve never seen anyone be so excited about an old cop car. That alone is worthy of being entertainment. Nerd power! But seriously speaking… you got a great deal on a good car.
Randy, don't get rid of your 40 Chevy. You will kick yourself until you die. I had a 41 Chevy coupe and got rid of it and I'm still kicking myself and now I'm 75 and I wish I had a back yesterday please don't get rid of it. May God bless you and I love your Channel
Taurus SHO = 3.5L direct-injected Twin-turbo EcoBoost V6, 2 Garrett GT1549L turbochargers, produce 365 hp (272 kW) at 5500 rpm and 350 lb⋅ft (475 N⋅m) of torque at 1500-5250 rpm. This faster than a Ferrari 355! Congrats, with this great find!
FUN FACT: It's not exactly the same powertrain as the SHO. It lacks the T404 Ford Performance package. It shares the same driveline, with the same final ratio. But the timings and tuning on this engine are totally different. It's tuned from the factory for reliability and longevity. This will do 0-60 in about 5.5 - 6.0 seconds where as the SHO from the factory is closer to 5 flat. Many of the higher performance parts on the SHO engine are also different, as they wanted more parts compatibility with mainline production for ease of fleet service/maintenance.
Randy sir, as a public works truck driver/mechanic in NJ. Looking at that car it had to have been an top ranking officer of the department because if that had been a regular street patrol vehicle it would’ve been beaten to shit. All top officers are the only ones who drive their own vehicles and when they get tired of them or the new budget comes out for the new year. They put in for a new one for themselves. That’s just the way it is. Spend taxpayers money on themselves when it’s not their money. Great buy Randy, you’ll make your money back and then some. Very sought after vehicle!!!
I've owned a highly tuned (just shy of 500 whp) 2013, 3.5l Ecobeast for three years. Just bought a black one. Can't buy a better car. 75 mph rear impact rated and Ballistic doors, roll cage, dual led spots, 30 amp 115 volt trunk power, etc. The list goes on...Nice find!
Awesome price! I would see if you could get the repair record for it and verify the turbos have been rebuilt with 155k on the OD it may be due soon if not done already.
Just was scanning and saw your post. About 3 weeks ago I bought a 2018 police package for $9300. It is in steller condition. New intercept tires, runs like new and runs like a scalded dog. Only thing with mine is that I'm still learning to drive it. I'm a retired LEO of 42 years and was driving by a lot a local guy has selling all kinds of retired law enforcement vehicles. When I get down on mine and the front engages you have to be ready because it will grab the wheel from you. Horn didn't work because the siren was wired to it to change sounds when running code. I traced down the factory horns, plugged them up and works like a charm. I'm averaging 21- 24, if I keep my foot out of it. You will laugh, I got my first speeding ticket in 54 years in it. 92 in 55. Tropper was great dropped it down to 66 in a 55. I've had mine up to 146 but got nervous but still had petal. Lastly mine was a Supervisors car. I have a few small hole here and there from mounting blue lights but that's it. 1 suggestion, mine had some minor fingernail scratches and rock dings but if you wax it with black color wax it looks like new. Be careful and have fun.
I love the power and drivability of the Taurus SHO AWD! That police version is a step UP from the SHO though and you are right to love it! So many upgrades for police vehicles make them literal tanks, compared to regular cars and quite a bit faster too!
You probably will need to power up the siren box for the vehicle horn to work. It could be using the horn tap. They probably unplug the ppv wiring in the center console.

I wonder if this car might have been the local chief of police's car, because the idle time is a lot less than I would expect a squad car to be. That's just my opinion and it is also based on all the options retained on the car. I could be wrong and I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will correct me but it would be neat to imagine you're driving the chief's car.... Right???!!! That is an absolutely fantastic find; well done my friend.

I agree
That road is literally the PERFECT road for a 0-60 test! Definitely a great buy, can’t wait to see more!
Have fun!
That driver had expired tags, but you had no tags. L O L
🤣
Randy’s like a kid in a candy store with this car. 😂😂😂
He said the neighbor that’s a cop knows who he is, no big deal.
Do not get rid Of this car you will never find another one I would keep it anyway just for a toy
🤣 💯🎯
What a sweet find. It's gonna be a speed beast. Love to test it out on a nice track! Open up the full power and have some fun. Cha ching again Randy!!
I’d say around 5.2 seconds .. with a tune 3-4 bar map and intake it can do high 4 second 0-60s
Congratulations "officer Randy"
That's a cool ride I wish to own once I have the funds, excellent car firsthand information from an acquaintance that owns one currently
cop tires, cop twin turbo, cop lights - damn Randy you scored on that one!
365 HP. Only 5HP less than a Dodge Charger RT base model Hemi. 0-60 5.2 seconds. I have a 2015 SHO with only 12,000 miles. Very fast car. Great find!
I can’t believe it was that cheap 👍
@@Stephens_offroad_and Yes,any panther platform will do except for maybe the Town Town car. Where I'm at and most anymore, its a Police Interceptor Explorer or Charger. Most people who aren't a car person see a CV or a GM still act cautious while driving when near. Mine has the actual wheel covers( brake dust is bad until I change the pads )and not the dog dish covers.
i seen this on instagram!! couldn't wait for this one!! love fords especially taurus sho's! you stole this one randy good for you!! got a feeling your gonna get a lot of views!! love your police car!
You're like a kid at Christmas with that Taurus Interceptor! What a great find! You always have the best toys. 👍🇺🇸😎
Good idea filming in the evening when it's cooler. Still no sign of the Florida Taurus SHO?
I'm a responder living in PA. Most of these twin turbo's were used by the PA State Police. So many of those hours were at idle while observing traffic. Enjoy your new ride!👍
Thanks for the info
Make sure you tilt that spotlight down when your driving on the highway so a rock or something doesn’t kick up and brake it!
*break
Or the highway patrol doesn't pull him over for impersonating.
Hope you’ll keep it
That car is a thing of beauty!!All it needs now is dark tints.
Randy, I'm super envious! I work for a Sheriff's Office who utilizes the N/A versions of these. I'd love to have this to embarrass them with this when you're done with it. #NowAcceptingDonations lol
They usually Disconnect the lights and stuff when they send it to the auction
Looks like you found one hell of a good deal! I have a few observations that may help you out:
A) I'm guessing the siren was wired into the horn fuse, so there's a good chance all they did was pull the horn fuse to disable the siren;
B) Given the back seat is leather and has power windows that work, I doubt it was meant for ANY type of criminal transport.
(The SUV interceptors are like that)
I think you really lucked out! Can't wait to see a follow-up on this beautiful car!
another great find! I like how you parked it on the side of the highway lol. mustve scared the living crap out of people passing by
At 17:02 he say these people are getting paranoid as he's posted up right where the real cop would sit😂😂😂
That's basically an SHO without all of the mandatory luxury options. I bet it weighs a lot less than an actual SHO and is faster as well.
Per Ford, 1 idle hour equates to 33 miles.. so 4,633 idle hrs x 33mi = 152,889 miles in addition to the 155k on the clock.. so theoretically the car has 308k on it
It is not 33 miles of wear, that is how to calculate oil change intervals in vehicles
Nice score bro.....
i'd never get rid of that taurus you stole that thing, i'd have some door stickers made that look like cop decals but say auto auction rebuild lol
The horn is run thru the siren box. When that box is on - the horn ring controls it. When that siren is turned off - the horn is normal. As mentioned - the siren unit is probably just unplugged.
That's what I thought myself
In my opinion this is the coolest car I've seen you purchase yet I really like this one and I hope it's just things that are unplugged and it all works for you that would be amazing good luck with it sir I wish you the best and maybe a Dyno run lol
I got the NA version for a loaner car an I will say they are fun cars am handle very well. I can see why the department uses them
I want a car like that lol
I purchased a 9C1 police car way back in the day when they first starting selling them to the public. All the wires for the wig wag lights and sirens were there but they cut them under the hood. An hour and a bunch of butt connectors and everything worked again !!! I think they have to disable that stuff before selling. Should be an easy fix. Awesome car ! Best part about it was driving in the fast lane and watch people scramble to get out of your way.
No lightbar! Looks perfect the way it is!
Agreed and I doubt the police will be happy with a bar on top regardless of the color lights
I’ve never seen anyone be so excited about an old cop car. That alone is worthy of being entertainment.
Nerd power! But seriously speaking… you got a great deal on a good car.
I love that car please get more of these police interceptors look how many views it made
Randy, don't get rid of your 40 Chevy.
That first acceleration you did was insane.
miles mean nothing i worked in car auction bizz we use to get used police car 20 to 30 at a time they are very well maintained nice one you got there
I own a retired Chicago police p71 Vic n I’ve owned it over 6 years n I absolutely love it
FUN FACT: It's not exactly the same powertrain as the SHO.
With all that idle time actual mileage is closer to 300,000. You got absolutely hosed for that price!
I believe the horn does not work due to it being used to switch to different sirens like the FD does. I would keep in forever. Good and fun cruiser.
Randy, that ex-police car is a good buy at USD5k....it's supremely elegant & original twin turbo AWD...look stunning in every way it look...🎉😂
Love the police package, can’t wait for the SSr update!
You probably will need to power up the siren box for the vehicle horn to work. It could be using the horn tap. They probably unplug the ppv wiring in the center console.
Happy you finally got a Taurus man! I have a 2016 Ford Taurus SEL silver but mine is the citizen version. I know what you mean a car that big doesn't look like it should be that fast. I have let some of my family members use my car and they would always come back to me saying man I didn't know that car was that fast hahaha. But again very happy you got one you will for sure love it!
Best deal so far. These cars go for 11,000 and above in my area.
Randy I have a 2016 just like that AWD twin turbo mine was used by a detective of course I opened her up it's my daily driver as much as I love working on cars I love driving through my city she turns heads put a performance exhaust and open her up and you won't want to get rid of it
It's like my Flex, but in sedan form!
I love my Flex so much.
That's a steal!! Congrats! Get that PTU checked ASAP and do your maintenance and you got a great cruiser there!
Dude thats a steal for a taurus SHO. One of the most underrated modern sleeper cars for sure.
Good score. Hopefully the water pump was changed already I’ve heard it’s a big laborious job and the only knock on those cars . Good luck 👍🏻
That 3.5 eco-boost has at least 400HP. The current navigators have 450HP, and they are quick. That interceptor is definitely quick. Awesome find sir!
I've been watching your videos for quite some time, and this one was 10 out of 10.(first comment on the channel) Think the Taurus is great....something I'd personally like to own. What a steal at the price. (Funny how people react when they see it.....priceless)
looks to be a nice taurus the idle hrs are normal for it , I would service the fluids in trans and the transfer case in it , there fun cars
Dang you got a steal on that car congratulations, once you feel
those cars it's all over you're hooked! i bought a 2007 p71 and it's
like a brand new car wish i could see the car fax, can you help me out???
Timing chain, cam chains, water pump, PCV chamber and two turbochargers cost roughly $6 to $7000.00. Add that another $500 if the PTO hasn't been serviced at regular intervals. You'll be needing all that. Don't ask me how I know...
Thankfully it’s a police car with PTU coolers and they always maintain these cars. I’m not worried.
I got lucky with buying a Ford Taurus for my elderly mother. It was a low mileage unmarked car, and the sleeper has incredible performance. We've sold it, but I still see it running around town. The large tires are a giveaway..
what an awesome find man. police interceptor variants are some of the most sought after police cars out there and you found a beauty.
365 horsepower and 365 foot pounds of torque...rock and roll!!!
Hey Randy, I just want to let you know that I watched today’s video on the Ford Taurus police car. You hit the nail on the head with that one dude I really like it and I hope you can get the time reference to working in the PA system to work can’t wait to see your next video on the car. Talk to you later buddy have a good day.
Bring it to the Frog Follies in Evansville, IN. Just a couple of hours south of Terre Haute on Hwy 41. The dates are Aug 25 thru 27th. Over 2,500 street rods will be there. You could probably get much more than $30,000.
The car puts out 365 hp and goes 0 to 60 in 5.2 seconds. Gross weight is a tad over 4,000 pounds.
Nice interceptor 🔥🔥🔥
