I'd thought he'd done himself in by overindulgence, and maybe it did contribute, but he died from liver cancer. Met him a couple times, once as a clerk at a Quik Pik, me not him, and was in a band called Roadhouse and he sat in at a party. Evidently he later joined that band after I was gone.

They had it all. Awesome guitarist, great voice, top notch production and their songs had the hook that's usually needed to be a hit. Never understood why they didn't make it either. I still see McCarty around town 2-3 times a year with his band Mystery Train and a couple times a few years ago with Cactus. I've seen pretty much all the greatest guitarist in the world with the exception of Hendrix & consider him to be one of them.

I don’t know why they didn’t. They came close.
I was born and raised in Seattle. I saw Loverboy and the Rockets open for Sammy Hagar, New Year’s Eve, 1980. Loverboy was on first, I thought they were kind of lame (I liked their 2nd album, a year or two later). The Rockets were GREAT! I liked them as much as Sammy. The rest of the crowd seemed to like them as well.
I think that the Rockets, for whatever reason, weren’t promoted enough. Maybe their record company didn’t want to spend money on them. I think their distribution wasn’t what it could have been. No Ballads should have been a breakout for them. “Taking it Back”, “Sally Can’t Dance”, and ”Desire" should have been singles. But I only know one person who had a copy of No Ballads (I copied onto cassette and played it til it wore out), but I think he got it as a handout at a radio station event. I don’t recall hearing on the radio, or seeing it in record stores. I think they would have done well here.

@@jamesweldon9726 who was their label, RSO? That's probably why. Robert Stigwood was having financial trouble at the time and wound up selling the label to Polydor. Record companies were in dire straits (ha) in the early 80s. I still have a copy of both the albums around downstairs. They still get talked about around here in the Detroit area.

Thanks for the insight / background on that particular gig. Yes, both bands (Rockets / REO) went on extremely late that night - so its cool now to know what was behind the delay. Uncle Buck on Sunday morning out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. WLAV seems to have sold out to corporate these last few months, they didn't announce a program change, they just started adding a bunch of songs that are not true "Classic Rock" and it sucks now. WMMQ With Deb Hart out of Lansing. She is a classy lady and does a wonderful job. Sometimes that other guy that shares the morning mic gets in the way- what a huge ego he has, but you have to put up with a little to get what you want. He puts out trivia questions that few people would know, so the bulk of the population is out of the running, too bad. Way to go Uncle Buck and Deb Hart- love what you do.

Anyone know what ever happened to Dennis Robbins after his country music run? Thanks.

Here’s a link to an Paul Leslie Hour interview with Dennis Robbins: ruclips.net/video/gqmhyPOCFV8/видео.html
BTW: I love Dennis’s music, his country songs are the bomb diggity. Home Sweet Home is a nice combination of blues, rock and roll, and country. Wish he was a bigger country star.

I thought he was great back then. Watching this video, ooooh boy. I was young and dumb. Sad David passed, he could have been great if he went straight…wow it is weird getting old and looking back….
