The transition from This Beat Goes On to Switchin' to Glide is one of those transcendent moments in rock music, where you can't believe something this good exists. I was aware of this song because of my dad listening to album rock radio in the car in the '90s, but it's only now, closer to middle-age, where I can appreciate fully how great this is. Like "Driver's Seat" or "Ah! Leah!", it's one of those songs that's easy to fall through the cracks for years if not decades, but then you hear it again and just say "oh my god, THIS song!!!"
What a great comment Jonathan, thanks so much, when we hear it, we really feel that all the work we put into it paid off, it sounds great. Here's the story: ruclips.net/video/K4uz7tuTIfo/видео.html

I was one of the many Chicago kids that loved this song when it took Chicago by storm due to play on WLS while the rest of the US essentially missed it.
While it is true that Chicago was a huge success for us, it really did hit well in most major US markets, Boston, NYC, Dallas, Houston, Seattle, LA, Phoenix, Detroit and many more cities gave it extensive radio play. But yeah Chicago was huge!
I asked my hubby who grew up in HI and SoCal, he never heard this song until I played it for him today! I grew up in Chicago, I LOVED this song!!
@@sosumi_rogue That's great @sosumir4896, although we did get a lot of airplay in SoCal at the time!
WLS and WCFL were the Chicago stations to listen too.
@@sosumi_rogue Odd. It was in regular rotation in Phoenix when it became a hit. It also was used as a drive-time evening anthem for like a decade at the #1 AOR Rock station in Phoenix. Hard to imagine Phoenix being ahead of LA in that trend when we were like five years late in every other trend.
If this song came out today it would still absolutely kill. One of the best songs ever
+Brendan Ferguson It would, but would radio play it?

Hey DRG, that is quite the endorsement, but we always wondered where the electricity comes from?
Back again! Realized exactly why my pickup had 200 watts and 8 speakers. And understand now why I'm slightly deaf. The Kings, Toronto, and Bachman/Turner........... Canadian summer. Of course we played them in the winter too, but, in the summer, the people in the car beside you could hear the music clearly. VERY Clearly.. To the Gents of The Kings....... Thanks, y'all made summers good.
Best thing about this clip is that is shows the Kings were having a great time at every performance.
Thanks @GMacD173, we've often said if you don't enjoy playing your original music for people, maybe it's time to pack it in...
A while back, I worked in radio. I found out they had a remastered version of the CD. I wrote to find out how to purchase one for the station. They sent me a personal copy with a note from Zero to play often! And we did, every Friday at 5. I still have it...along with my mom's cassette from 1980!
We were happy to provide that, Bee Kay 5150, and pleased to learn it was used for airplay! And your Mom obviously had great taste in music!
Oh I remember those Friday afternoons when this came out. KDF in Nashville did that too. The 5:00 kickoff to the weekend! What a time to be young and alive!!!

One of THE best songs from the 80s. It's the perfect rock song.

Awesome 70s Rock and Roll Song
When you realize that you’ve composed a song that’ll never die with the decadence and will live long after you’ve gone.
Thanks again John, it was just inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and will be in a jukebox forever at the National Music Centre in Calgary Alberta.
Listen to all 80s still in 2024 and always will be
Lots of good stuff there for sure Kevin!
Every time I hear this I am back to my first year at university, its 1980, I'm in one of the college pubs playing pool with my buddies, this song comes blasting over the speakers, people start dancing, and 19 year old me thinks - "man, it just does not get any cooler than this."
Yeah @SC-yx6wr, being young was good wasn't it?
"Nothin' matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view" - one of my favorite lyrics ever.
It does have a certain appeal doesn't it?

We agree Daniel, and we have lots more great songs!
They weren't a one hit wonder. Their music is really very good, take a Sunday afternoon and check it out. It's amazing that well written songs got on the radio in any time era. At least before 2000 there was still a chance of a great band, like The Kings, to get on the radio.

@@thekingsarehere Definitely worth it! Perfect well-chosen cuts! Great job!
@@dugmcdade Thanks Doug, we are very proud of it!
The perfect synchro dated mix editing makes your smash hit a unique one of a kind In the entire history of Rock N Roll! The Kings know it was worth every minute of their love and our love for it too.😍 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
@@codyjoewhite2563 We kinda humbly agree with you Cody Joe White, and the process was itself a lot of work. We had source material of every kind, and had to get it all put into Final Cut and then we had the lyrics written out on big poster card sheets, then had different coloured markers running through-bad-not bad-good-better-best for each of the over 40 sources. And then had to put them in perfect sync because we hate out of sync cymbal crashes etc. Cuts are short because of tempo live vs the album soundtrack. It was like a job over a few weeks, 5 or 6 hours a day. Worth it!
One of the all time best party songs!
agreed and jgeils
Thanks and don't give us the evil eye!
thekingsarehere Not to worry, the evil eye is not pointed in your direction. Thanks for your great music!!
This song has been putting a smile on my face for what 43- 45 years? Just like Tears of a Clown, Superstition, and a handful of others, it never gets old and always makes me feel good when I hear it.
Yeah it was summer of '80... do the math.. ouch! but seeing your comment makes the years disappear @tunnieking, thanks so much for that!
Listening to Ice Berg on xmsirius has brought back a lot of memories/ songs from the past. I'm from Buffalo, NY and the radio here doesn't play this.

And in the summer? Can't be beat thanks JudyGurl!
This song will never get old. Talk about feel good tunes, "Switchin' To Glide" is at the top of
the list. Plus, I love this video, the way it was put together. It flashes from performance to
performance without being manic. Bless The Kings!
Thanks Mitch, because this came out the year before MTV there never was a video for it and so the timing for us wasn't great because we were a visual band...but...the videos from then mostly suck and so many years later we decided to make our own to be the basis of our documentary "Anatomy of a One-Hit Wonder". Both projects took a lot of work but we are happy with the results. The quick cuts are because it went out of sync really quickly from the different live tempos and we wanted it perfect.
@@thekingsarehere WOW. Amazing job!!!!
@@bobthebear1246 Thanks Bob!
As a DJ in Boston back in the day, everytime I spun this one the dance floor EXPLODED!
It's one of those things that is pretty much guaranteed, Russ.... which is fantastic of course. The tempo is around 126 BPM, right in the dance zone. Someone recently said their band was going to learn it and we said that this is what would happen... every time!
And on WBCN , Boston! 💕😁😃
Clever video with the "Then and Now" clips synchronized. Played the shit out of this at house parties in college, everyone danced when this came on! Thanks for some good memories.
Thanks Chris, it was a lot of work but the video end result was worth it. It still gets 'em up dancing to this day which is great.
The Chicago radio market tried twice to make this a big hit back in the day! Switchin to Glide is great classic rock!
The support we got in Chicago was incredible for sure Astrosjer, and we've played there many times, can't wait to get back!
I have listened to this song for years. My favorite when I lived in Phoenix Arizona. Dave Pratt played this song every Friday afternoon on the drive home along with Seven bridges road.
We've heard about that in Phoenix, Adam, but didn't know it was with the Eagles song... thanks!

from the opening guitar riff, to the great bass and the organ....everything just works. it's like the perfect party rock song to get ready for the weekend. have my older bro to thank for hearing this one.....he would constantly have it on the loop (chicago classic rock radio station) and still remember the first time i heard it. couldn't wait to hear it again. how this song never got huge is a mystery to me. it works on so many levels. and how an 80's movie soundtrack never used it is beyond me. AND, how was this song NOT in a guitar hero or rock band game?!?!?! was hoping when those games were in their heyday that this song would eventually get snatched up but it never did for some odd reason. it would have been PERFECT for one of those games!!!!

"This Beat Goes On" was my theme song in my early 20s. Thanks for the memories!! THIS BEAT REALLY DOES GO ON!!!
Thanks so much for your kind words Mark, all the best wishes to you!
I was a junior in high school when this came out, and I loved it! (Still do, of course). I even had a t-shirt made up that said “Member: Lunatics Anonymous” (In those fuzzy, iron-on Cooper letters - remember those?) on the front. It was also custom to put your name or nickname on the back. “Paul” was too “blah,” so I needed a nickname. Didn’t have to look any further than this song - I decided to call myself “Zero.” Yes, I know it’s lame to give yourself a nickname, but I was desperate! Anyway, I started my senior year in a new school in a VERY small town, and one day I wore that t-shirt, and the nickname caught on! I was the class clown, so the nick fit perfectly. My classmates still refer to me as Zero to this day! So, thank you @thekingsarehere, for what was undoubtedly my favorite year of high school, and the wonderful memories I have of it.
Signed,
Your Hero, Zero
@@zeromyhero8018 That's a great story there Zero, wow! The Zero in our band didn't give himself the name, it was thrust upon him and it was not a compliment at all... something to do with his perceived negative attitude, which isn't at all, honest! And Lunatics Anonymous... the initials...dunno if it's true or maybe a coincidence...?

We did get tons of airplay in most major US markets, Bill, but our second single was held back due to the payola scandal at the time which was written about in "Hit Men". Yes.
One of our kids was um ya conceived while this was rockin on!
Not exactly Barry White but it still got the groove going.
"Nothing matters but the weekend". Heard this hook since the 80s, had no idea these guys sang it. Had no idea that The Kings were a band. Back in 83 we were 10 years old when MTV was new. A bunch of us were comparing bands. One guy said "I like the Kings." Another one interjected and said "Sure, The Kinks" and started to sing Come Dancing. "No, The Kings!" None of us knew who he was talking about. About 40 years later I now know who he meant.
Well John, better late than never! We were before the MTV era and were one and done in the hit department but it has legs to this day and thanks to our self made video, new people are finding us which is really cool so we appreciate this!

You guys are more than welcome I love your music And the beat will go on forever! Do you still play?
Yes we do, and still love it!
Well, this is as great sounding now as it was 40 odd years ago. A great anthem. I'm glad I lived close enough to Quebec and Ontario to receive Canadian radio stations or I wouldn't have heard of you guys. Greetings from way upstate NY!
Well Captain Trips we got a lot of airplay across upstate NY, Buffalo, Rochester, Albany, Syracuse and more ...and played all those towns as well.... as well as the Canadian stations, it was awesome!
Love this tune!
Thanks Gary and we love you too!
WOW...So many thumbs downs....What a bunch of musically illiterate folks....THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!!
+Norm Saucemam Nearly 1.4 million plays and 135 thumbs down.... that is fringe beyond the fringe...!
thekingsarehere
Are you kidding? 2.2 million views and 412 dislikes is practically unheard of!
Stormy ... No sweat. The thumbs down are just drunks holding their phones upside down.
@@JW...-oj5iw Justin Beiber lovers, I'm thinking.
GREAT MUSIC AND MUSIC
Should be the Canadian National Anthem!!!
Hilarious! We like it!
Paul Witzel the Canadian anthem is "Fireworks" by the Tragically Hip
Everyone is entitled to their opinion...!
Yes!
i still like OCANNNADAA
A great KSHE classic from back in the day, and one I never tire of hearing. Great job on the video, and I'm glad you guys are still having fun performing this one, just as we are all still having fun listening to it!
Yes thanks Vindicator33, we played in St Louis a couple times and the support we got from major US radio stations like KSHE was why so many people search us out and find us here and FB and all that... love it!
KSHE 95 Real.Rock.Radio It was the bomb back in the day when I listened to radio! Now so happy to be able to find videos like this on YT!
I vividly remember this song coming on the radio in Chicago around 1980. It caught fire on whatever station I was listening to, because it went in to heavy rotation FAST.
Sure did BarneeFife, and the ripples from that still resonate!
Nothing matters but the weekend from a Tuesday point of view
And hey, today is Tuesday!
@@thekingsarehere definitely(I post this on Tuesday night) :D
It's a thing!
Hot dan!!! This song frigging mad me smile and sing which is rare fighting depression. It's magical musi..ot truly is 💯 ❤😊
Thanks for the very kind words, Colonel Angus, take care!
If this song hits my shuffle, not a scratch of homework will be done that weekend. Bet your ass.
That is quite an endorsement.... but please use the 'dog ate my homework' instead of 'The Kings were on my shuffle' excuse, or on second thought, it just might work!
Once I'm switchin' there ain't no lookin' back!!
thekingsarehere If the teacher has a soul you'll probably get extra credit.
That would be nice
Their American Bandstand performance got pre-empted on the east coast USA in Jan '81, due to an Iranian hostage situation ABC news special report. The 13 year old kid in me is still pissed off about that.
+Old Tape Archive Hey Old Tape Archive, we are still pissed off about that as well. Hard to tell what effect it would have had to what we were doing, but we did a great job on AB and for sure it would have helped the cause.
There are outlets, dammit!
I remember that also. So disappointing.
Some of this footage appears to be from AB, were they on more than once?
Calls for another Pistachio Boycott !!!
The perfect song DOES exist 😮
That is an incredible statement but we'll take it, thanks!
We had a local FM station here in Phx that played this tune EVERY Friday afternoon at 5:00pm
Tim Crofford ... KDKB ... ROCKS ARIZONA. At least it used to. KUPD & KSLX also played the Friday afternoon weekend kickoff tunes. If I was able to be in the truck at the time, and the stations were on the right spacing, I could sometimes get a triple dose of the Kings. That was the whole point of listening on Friday afternoon. Sorry for the others, but STG was the only song I was interested in hearing in the kickoff.
IT was
Kdkb

@@thekingsarehere I still love it to this day !
EVERY TIME I hear this on the Radio I turn volume ALL THE WAY UP AND start Screaming the lyrics
Great to hear that, we love it! "Yes officer, I was singing very loudly but it was The Kings!"
thekingsarehere
I would have given someone a break with a good excuse like that. Plus...it's original!!
My dad showed me this song a couple days ago. Just when I thought I had heard everything good from the yesteryears, this proved me wrong! Also jeez this video is edited well oh my lord
Your Dad is a brilliant guy @zdoesgame, thank him for us! And yes, it took over 140 hours to edit this five and a half minute video, but it was worth it!
I also have a nice 71 Chrysler 300,it comes with an 8-track,I keep Nazareth's Hair of the Dog in it,in loving memory of my Ex (Miss Misery)Wife.
