If I may recommend something as an artist, don't use solid blacks and whites for your brightness controls or fog. It makes stuff look really static and dull. It's better to gradient in dark and light values of actual colors. I like using blues for shadows and somewhere between lavender and yellow for highlights, but it depends on the color comp and mood you're going for. Blending modes are also good, multiply for shadows and overlay for highlights, if you need that extra oomph. That should help your values and colors be more dynamic. If nothing else though, please study a lil bit of color theory if you can? The basics will get you far and it's not hard to wrap your head around, at least at first. As a source, I think Marco Bucci has a good assortment of color theory videos and some exercises for those who wanna get into art in general. If you just wanna do game dev stuff though, his stuff is still very valuable. Pikat also has a video on general color theory thats pretty good.

This is fine for simple games such as platformers where its just simple landscapes, but suppose you want more detail, what do you do then? For example, if you plan to make say a visual novel, the background images would be different settings such as a school, a building, etc. And then you have the actual characters too. This is my biggest hurdle when it comes to making games, asset production. I suck at art and I have no idea on making music

I really like how the far objects have more blue color on them and the wkite-ish clouds of course, but I prefer a bigger variety in green color from the first example, so something in between editing looks best to me. The reason is that there are barely any clouds so it should be sunny, bet at the end it looks overcast.

sorry but this doesn't look good. saying this as a graphic designer, you should never darken with pure black, nor light with pure white. that's why the color palette capsule-thingy ended up not looking great and giving a very washed-out palette. good color palettes have hue and saturation variation

I like the starting point better than the finished piece...it's much more vibrant and real, the last piece looks like one of those mobile games you play on the train for a minute and you close it... but oh well :D I mean like he said, there was no color coordination, yes, but the colors themselves... and their range was better in my view.

Bro THIS IS MADE IN 10 MINS. Have you watched him before? This was his main line, "Dont use solid black or white". He has other livestreams and videos which are long but done better. Time = Quality... Also if you want to learn "proffesionaly" then you can but his 2D art pro course that is very detailed. He needs to make a living too.

That comes with practice he has been doing art for a long time. I have been doing 3d for almost 10 years and I still struggle with that artist eye.

To add to the practice comment, this is where references come in handy. You can study the game art (or photos) that you like and try to replicate that style in your own work. If you search for a landscape photo, you'll immediately see the "fog" that Thomas talks about in the video.

Thomas, could you create a similar tutorial on color for 2.5D or 3D game? I think it would be very useful.

These are definitely great stuff. What if we want to to be able to express ourselves artistically or go with a style in our mind. Because this only works with certain styles and doesn't solve the problem of creating valuable visual material like environment vibe and characters.
