I consider myself a simple man. I see Outdoors55 video, I click. Thanks for the post!
Same
Thanks I appreciate it!
Same here ❤
This guy is top notch 🫡
Saying something we think is obvious and then testing it to make sure is true is just the process we call science. Sometimes you find out something obvious isn't true!
For sure 👍👍
Well put. I was thinking the same thing.
There still might be a hidden common variable, unknown to us. However, the probability is low.
Next week, we'll cover pseudoscience!
Exactly!💚🤘
Do you ever run out of arm hair to test shaving sharpness on? LOL
Always growing a new crop. Proper hair management is needed for continued harvesting and long term sustainability.
@@OUTDOORS55 😂😂😂
my left arm is constantly bald or patchy. it looks pretty weird haha
I have moved on to my legs😮. Arm hair grows too slow.
Lol
Yes I would like to see a diamond edge vs a Shapton edge please
can you make a scissor sharpening tutorial
Good idea!
I second that
That's what I thought, after cutting a couple sheets of 220 grid sand paper
Yes, scissors please, my barber taught me his method & I'd love to see if yours is the same.
Oh yeah
I invested a great deal of time and effort trying to replicate what 55 does. It was a long process (over a year) for the blade to not be worse after my sharpening. I wanted the skill on the stone not the edge from the Lansky or the can. Then one day I just understood and I was able to whittle a hair. Now all edges are wicked. Thank you 55.
The scientific method is alive and well on the Outdoors55 channel! Thanks for all you do!
Whatever you have been doing since you posted about being sick : keep it up. Your videos are better, not worse.
Thanks! Appreciate it🙏👊
I honestly like this kind of content a lot
Me too. I’m all here for it
Another visual triumph!
It will make people think for themselves and that makes Alex a good educator
This video deserves more than a simple thumbs up.
Even your dull knife is perty sharp compared to what some of my friends consider good enough 😸
Excellent vid, thank you.!
Good to see you back with the green chromium oxide compound. What we simple folks use.
I converted to diamond and now we're back to the green stuff
I think the chromium oxide does a better job of leaving the carbides in place as far as what it looks like on his microscope camera@@BenLymanO_o
@@BenLymanO_o stick to diamond. it's vastly better, safer for health, lasts longer, better results, cuts anything, works faster, can be used in any grit you want... and as long as you dont get scammed buying edc bro gimmicks like "gunny juice" it's dirt cheap;
Seeing carbides in the steel was buzzy! You can't seem to stop topping yourself on the macro shots.👍
Bro i was so ready to hear about that pull through knife sharpener. 😂
Your close ups or theee best I've ever seen in the knife community keep it up alex!
WOW! Jack Nicholson in a OUTDOORS55 video!!!!
A lot of people don’t realize how crucial information like this is in our search of finding our sharpening comfort zone what we are comfortable with in a sharp edge
Your channel has evolved quite a lot since the beginning. I really like what you are doing now.
man, you're on fire with all these videos!
I've been using knives for over 50yrs..learned a lot thanks to this channel
Alex, you have contributed so much "science of sharp " to this community. Awesome content man.
04:21 I don't know about you guys, but I like to cut loads of paper after my sharpening session... I just can't help it, I find it satisfying, and relaxing.
Perfect video for us knife steel nerds
I still remember from back when it was always DoN't CuT CArdBoarD iT'LL WreCk YOur eDgE. I've live streamed 4 hours of cutting dirty cardboard with D2 and it still kept a useable edge. 8cr held up pretty well too. 440 from 1980 did wear at about 2 1/2 hours. And diamond paste on a strop is a rapturous delight.
Well that WAS true back before knife steels got so bafflingly good.
Yeah, man. It's been a few decades. I was actually really timid about what I cut until I started doing hours long cardboard slayer marathons.
Love the ending, funniest guy on the internet and he's just winging that part. lol
Amazing video and photography. This something totally different from other sharpening videos
Thank you very much!
Wow your 5000 grit edge is art. I’ve done a lot of looking at edges under my microscope and I’ve never been even close to a scratch pattern that perfect.
Yeah. The time I got to sharpening was about the "knife shop" that offers sharpening. Gave them the knife, 2 days later got it back with only one side of the blade sharpened - the opposite side was straight as a line. Well, that was it. Bought first stone, watch videos (I consider myself lucky to stumble over you) and started sharpening. Great videos, keep up the exellent work.
Also, dull knives cut different. Sharp knife is faster to heal if you cut yourself.
Trolling with the pull through sharpener at the end. Brilliant.
That sand paper did a number, it's like a battle damage special effect.
I never thought that's what a dull edge would look like, you should've dulled on a brick though. Could you please make a beginners video on how to get paper towel cutting sharp? I semi cut the paper towel the first half but then at the second half it wont cut. If you made a video on this I think it would help me sharpen my knives. Thanks!
Appreciate you. Life is so much better since i tossed the pull thru sharpener and started using a stone.
man just watching the pace you sharpen at. im still learning and i mean as someone whose new to sharpening im surprised i got a kitchen knife sharp enough to be like a new knife. just your technique for getting the whole blade in one swipe form the speed and angle you hold is pretty crazy. thanks for all the videos they have been super helpful so far
Edge may wear by abrasion, rolling, chipping or corrosion.
This is important because if you evaluate edge durability with a test that causes abrasion it will not be very useful to predict durability on tasks that wear down the edge by other methods.
Thank you for science!
Very interesting & as others have requested please do a scissor sharpening video.
That was a really interesting episode. I have been perplexed why a strop or smooth steel will make a knife so sharp again so easily. I guess they really are straightening out the edge. A rough steel is another thing altogether, being in reality a round file.
Yes indeed , a coarse steel will hollow a blade much faster than a fine one, they both do it, but the fine one might take thirty years to do it.
Pete is going to be upset that you didn't show an edge dulled on hundreds of feet worth of twisted sisal rope. 😜 Also, the scratch pattern left by the 5K Kuromaku is very impressive. I wonder how similar a 5K diamond plate would be? Grit numbers across different abrasives are a bit strange, it seems. I always go finer with diamond to get what I believe to be similar results.
Got skin, paste and 240 grit diamond plate, had 1000 and 3000. Profiled the top 90° side of a snap blade on 240 in seconds(one sided edge), got a nice finish on a 1000, worked the edge from two sides on 3000, done 10 alternating passes on the strop.
I got myself a razor in freaking no time. Previously the two plates gave laughable result in comparison xD
Big thanks for teaching me, big thanks to the algorithm gods!
Best sharpening content on RUclips!
I have been the go to guy among my friends and family for sharpening almost everything since the mid 80's. I find it very relaxing and satisfying. But I have learned so much in the last few weeks since subscribing. SEEING IS BELIEVING when it comes to the apex of a blade. ......So here is a tidbit I thought you may look into: I recently picked up the 600 grit 8" Tsuboman stone you suggested and is amazing compared to my old DMT collection. I do have a DMT extra fine and a standard steel in the knife block at home. So, after seeing the burr being the reason I had apparently sharpened blades go dull so quickly, I was out in the woods and decided on an experiment. I tried removing the Burr using the magnesium flat of my army style flint fire starter because I have no traveling strop, I was really pleased. So next while at home I tried the almost polished edge of the aluminum base on the new 600. It also seems to remove the burr substantially. I don't have any way to magnify as a you do ,but it is definitely way better than cutting with the foil burr and having a premature dull blade. The edge retention of everything is way better!!!! It would be really interesting to hear your thoughts or even see what's happening
Always fun! Cheers 🎉 from 🇨🇦 Canada!
Thanks for sharing the experiences!
Thanks for sharing. Great work
heh the 4k advice is extra good on a 32 inch screen.
Please more videos like this. Love the content and am really interested in seeing different sharpening stones, different materials being cut and how far can you cut something before you are not able to bring back the edge from just stroping.
Always love your content man!
I have a big dilemma with every new Alex video- do I give in and watch right away or do I savor that new video in my feed to watch later. Tbh I can’t wait…have to watch right away. The closeup of stropping and carbides was so cool. Thank you 😀👍
Your videos still turning better and better... Great information with greater laughs! Tks my friend!
Excellent stuff Man ... Thank you 👍👍
Keep dropping the vids!!! Super happy ur putting out video frequently!
Trying!👊
His edges look like they were done with an angular system like the kme. Very impressive.
Thanks.
Keep well🙏
Super important video to me outdoors 55. I’ve learned a lot from you thanks brother man.
I really like your sharpening content
Interesting video 🇬🇧and informative thanks mate
Great video! No cutting my sandpaper into quarter sheets with my Kershaw everyday carry.
Thank you
Happy to see another video from you bro, you look like you're doin well :)
A really cool video idea would be a comparison of different abrasive media, like sharpening on all diamond, traditional stones with diamond stropping, and if you can get your hands on some, traditional stones with traditional stropping. Since I've gone to all diamond, I noticed my edges are much more aggressive cutting and seem much sharper, especially super steels with tungsten and vanadium carbides.
Awesome! The one-take videos were great too. Love the vibe, cutting edge science (no pun intended) and the microscope action clips.
There's a straight razor guy who does comparable photographs. But he'd been using a decently exspensive USB microscope. Pretty cool you can do that with a camera.
I've used a £40k digital microscope that didn't match the quality of images Alex produces here, no matter how much time I spent adjusting lighting, angles, and apertures. This leads me to suspect that Alex has invested heavily - but wisely! - in the lens(es) for his camera. Good lenses are rarely cheap.
Good one.
Very nice video. Thats all i got today!
Great video. Keep it up. I must be a nerd because it’s super interesting 😊
That's gold content right there!
I do have to admit you and neevesknives are my favorite youtubers but your definetly my favorite by a long shot. Im so happy yall are doing kinda collab ive been waiting for yall to.
Jared is awesome! Hes a great dude👍
Thanks for responding means everything
Thanks for making a new video im a huge fan outdoors55 your the best. Whenever i get the notification that you made a new video when im away from home i dont watch because i want to save it for the big screen.
Awesome! Thank you!
Again thanks for responding im a huge fan
Interesting study.
This is so interesting. Useless for me really but I love the content and you’re always entertaining!
Well played as always
For what its worth, another great video of close ups and more stellar sharpening information. Thank you sir for your videos! Please keep em coming ♥️🙏🏼
Another good video!
Been sharpening knives and chisels since a kid. It was the only thing my dad was ever impressed with lol. I love the advices we have now not just with stones ect but the ability to examine the eadg so close with such detail. I really appreciate the videos I've been working my way through them all. Got a new set of shapton stones and the diamond one you recommended and there spot on. My son who I taught got the shepton glass I was a little jealous there amazing. Keep these coming man 💪
Usually not this early. Great info, a lot of folks are not well informed via stropping.
hi, I really love what you are doing can you make a video on differential grit sharpening
Very good video as always. Leaves me curious what level of magnification that was.
good stuff
Love the content, I pray your health is improved/improving. I’m curious if you could see the carbides after diamond sharpening, I can’t seem to free hand well so I used a diamond based fixed angle sharpening system currently.
What would you strop with in ultralight hiking ? Real case scenario 😅
Also...
After sharpening with a pull through, a strop could solve edge retention?
Stropping with bare leather, any idea of the results?
You got me hooked again on sharpening 😅
Nice job! How did you take the photos showing the carbide dots?
I love all these videos. Will there be a video out from this channel on how to sharpen Machetes the same way there was one for sharpening an ax? I'd like to see the results and best sharpness/apex for something meant to be swung at tree branches
Hope you’re well buddy 🍻
Working on it! Thanks my friend 👊
Really enjoying these nugget sized, ummmm, nuggets of enlightenment :)
This video kept me on the edge of my seat. Fortunately the edge wasn’t as sharp as that 5000 grit edge! 🤪
Longer hair and a shift to the subtle, the surreal and the sublime. Please continue.
Suggestion: a video about the impact on the knife's edge with different kind of honing rods (diamond, ceramic...)
Hey! Love your videos. Can you do one on dual grit sharpening? I've been experimenting with it lately and it'd be cool to know if the benefits are real or just in my head. Thanks!
Alex, as a suggestion, I think You should put the scale in your incredible pictures (idk, maybe a line indicating how much a mm is in the picture)
I second that, it is very difficult to comprehend what we see as the edge looks the same on different magnification levels. In an other video where the knife was pulled and it just never wanted to end I completely lost a sense for the scale. Could be a line with a thin sharpie too, just something to calibrate our brains :)
Unfortunately i cant do that since every image is slightly different scale due to the way images are cropped. Thres no conversion factor. Its fairly complicated to scale images to optical microscopes for numerous factors.
@@OUTDOORS55 Thank you for answering, Alex.
cool to see how it just flops over, makes sense how the quick stropping can stand that back up, I suppose it may still be a bit weak?
Wil you please do a review on the worksharp field sharpener i love that thing to death you have to try it
Dude I think this'll be really helpful for us! And also give knife steel ppl some good ideas for developing a better n better micro structure, I felt like your close ups help a person imagine what's going on and how steel is reacting to abrasion n Impact
Nice
You’re right. I can’t handle the truth…
but I can handle these awesome macro shots
Veeery nice video! Again!
Greetings from Germany💚🤘
Worst thing I have encountered that dulled my knife was armaflex pipe insulation. Never again.
Really wonderful video!!!! Quite surprised that you’re using the “cheap” stropping compound vs diamond…
Sir. Can you make a short video on the strops. The leather you use is not a usual common leather in a close up. Its pretty flat.
I appreciate that you don't care if it matters, but will still collect all of data. This is the most important part to an unbiased understanding of any problem and is the scientific method in action, test and observe, then formulate conclusions that others can verify. This is something I wish came easier to more people and then it wouldn't be so hard to hire young people for engineering jobs.......
