How do you become an Elevator Mechanic?
In this video, we examine the average Elevator Mechanic salary in 2019 and Elevator Mechanic jobs growth. We gathered data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). We look at the historical salaries and job growth of Elevator Mechanics.
These income and job statistics are from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program. These salaries do not include bonuses or benefits. In our opinion, these are the most accurate salary numbers (better than indeed, glassdoor, and payscale).
Elevator installers and repairers install, fix, and maintain elevators, escalators, moving walkways, and other lifts.
Duties
Elevator installers and repairers typically do the following:
• Read and interpret blueprints to determine the layout of system components and to select the equipment needed for installation or repair
• Assemble elevator cars, installing each car’s platform, walls, and doors
• Connect electrical wiring to control panels and electric motors
• Test newly installed equipment to ensure that it meets specifications
• Troubleshoot malfunctions in brakes, motors, switches, and control systems
• Dismantle elevator or escalator units in order to gain access to remove and replace defective parts, using hoists, ladders, and hand/power tools
• Repair and/or replace faulty components in order to return elevator to fully operational status
• Conduct preventive maintenance and inspections of elevators and escalators on a scheduled basis to ensure compliance with safety regulations and building codes
• Keep service records of all maintenance and repair tasks
Elevator installers and repairers, also called elevator constructors or elevator mechanics, assemble, install, maintain, and replace elevators, escalators, chairlifts, moving walkways, and similar equipment in buildings.
Elevator installers and repairers usually specialize in installation, maintenance, or repair work. Maintenance and repair workers generally require greater knowledge of electronics, hydraulics, and electricity than do installers because a large part of maintenance and repair work is troubleshooting. Most elevators have computerized control systems, resulting in more complex systems and troubleshooting than in the past.
After an elevator is installed, workers must regularly maintain and service it to keep the elevator working properly. They generally perform preventive maintenance, such as oiling and greasing moving parts, replacing worn parts, and adjusting equipment for optimal performance. They also troubleshoot and may be called to perform emergency repairs. Workers who specialize in elevator maintenance typically service many of the same elevators on multiple occasions over time.
A service crew usually handles major repairs-for example, replacing cables, elevator doors, or machine bearings. These tasks may require the use of cutting torches or rigging equipment-tools that an elevator repairer would not normally carry. Service crews also perform major modernization and alteration work, such as replacing electric motors, hydraulic pumps, and control panels.

This is a fantastic career. Been an IUEC Mechanic for 20+ yrs. The overtime is actually Double time not 1.5. If you’re part of IUEC across the country expect Double time. If you’re non union then 1.5 OT. What isn’t mentioned: this job isn’t for everybody! A lot of people see the money we make but don’t realize what the job entails. Especially if you work traction! Dropping lines, setting pit channels, etc. Not to mention once car sling is built! The fun part begins…. Stacking rails, and brackets, plus a lot more OJT that you’ll learn. It’s a dangerous. If you’re scared of heights…. I wouldn’t recommend. Cause you’ll have to get out on a ladder at some point 50-80 stories up. Even higher depending on building. Even walk on a beam once in awhile. With a harness ofcourse. Again, this job isn’t for everybody. It’s different being on the ground then being 80 stories+ and you freezing up! At least there’s mods/repair/service as well. Hope this helps! Stay safe!
I’m a mechanic in Chicago our base pay without overtime is 106,000
Do you have to travel a lot? Like far
What exactly is your job description? I’m a lift (elevator) engineer in the UK so I only fit lifts. Do you have to fit/repair escalators as well to get that salary?
Hi my friend, i'm brazilian, muito job is install elevator in schindler's company, my last equipment has 78 flors and 6 m/s. I Will like to go to Canadá see you
Been doing this job for 30 years now what the video doesn’t talk about is how dangerous this job can be .
1. If you have problems walking up more than six flights of stairs this May be not the job for you . ( My record 47 flights )
2. If you’ve ever been high up somewhere looked down and got dizzy this may be not a job you .
3. If you don’t like puzzles 🧩 maybe not a job for you 90% of what we do is problem solve
To the rest of you good luck 👍

You are to take the union test LOCAL 25!!!! Baby!!!!
If you're not related to someone already in the trade, you're outa luck. In the late 70s and 80s, I worked as an assistant manager for an independent elevator contractor in San Francisco. I was not a member of any union, however, I had experience in basic machine shop operations including steel fabrication (including assembly of elevator parts) and controller wiring.
I worked there for over 1-1/2 years and had nothing but problems with the shop steward from the elevator constructors union (IUEC Local 8) who complained that I was doing union work without actually being a member of the union. The management tried to get me into IUEC, but the union president told me I did not have any qualifying experience and I was not eligible to get into the union. So there's the elephant in the room - I'm doing union work without being in the union, but then I'm not qualified to get into the union.
The federal government has brought numerous complaints against the IUEC for discrimination and violation of equal opportunity employment regulations, but the union simply thumbs its nose and goes right on with it's nepostic policy. I suspect that IUEC (and other big unions) shovel toms of $$$ to congress so the EOE laws don't have any teeth.
Good job Local 19 for getting us on the top of the list…👍
I put in almost 7 yrs at UPS. I'm now seeking out a smaller Business in Missouri this Monday to start the Interview process towards working on Elevators for Life. Just 2 days ago I found out my Wife is expecting our 2nd baby. Here we go 2021!

Hello sir,how to apply as a elevator technician or elevator installer sir?
I am interested in how you determined your Average base salary. The title of the video is Elevator Mechanic Salary but the #s you are quoting appear to be largely the pay of a helper or apprentice and at that seems low,, the benefit package allotted , alone is Very significant , Thanks to the IUEC . BTW they receive an hourly wage not a Salary.
Hi Brian. Yes, these are base salaries or hourly rates. Benefits aren't included in the data. All of this is from the Department of Labor. Every year companies report these salaries to the government. So this data is from employers.
@@CareerWatchthat being said simple math would dispel these #s as straight time pay for a service mechanic without benefits exceeds the 120k mark .

@@adnanhalim99 Depends what department you're in. New construction guys are more subjected to layoffs, but the other departments aren't 100% insulated from them. What makes it so challenging and how so if theres been a drastic growth in employees of this trade?
I’ve been an Elevator Mechanic for 7 years now and it’s a pretty good job but definitely challenging. There is a lot of heavy lifting, awkward working positions, long hours (depends how you look at it, it’s nice for the extra money). You have to be relatively intelligent and be able to think on the spot, elevators are complex machines that require a great attention to detail when building them. It can also be very dangerous if you don’t take the necessary safety precautions. I’ve seen senior guys get severely injured due to complacency. Ultimately it is a pretty rewarding career and you can easily make $100,000 a year once certified. I live in Vancouver, Canada and the industry was booming but has definitely slowed down due to Covid and our company has laid off a fair but of guys. Beauty of this career though is elevator mechanics are essential and we will always be needed so if you’re good at it you can be certain you’ll have a job forever.
Keaton Dee how did you first get yourself in the trade? I’m from the Portland area, I just graduated high school and am seriously interested in becoming an elevator mechanic
Daniel Valihov Yeah so unfortunately it’s one of those careers where it really helps to know someone in the trade or at least have some construction experience. My uncle had been with the company for 30+ years at the time and put in a good word for me. A lot of guys that get hired were previous journeyman electricians or other things like that. You basically just need to go apply with one of the companies in your city and you might luck out and from there you’ll start the schooling process.
