    OMG! Thanks for keeping it simple and providing step by step instructions with video for the relatively novice DIYer. I'm a visual person. You can tell me, but I need to see you do it. A lot of videos I see on RUclips tell you vaguely how to accomplish something. I guess assuming one already has a wealth of experience.. Your video was in detail and showed me what to do. 2 thumbs up. Just what I was looking for.

    You did a great job showing how to do this. I have done several of our windows in our 104 yr. old home similar to your trim.. Highly recommend painting all the trim beforehand. It is super easy to fill a nail hole or touch up the caulking instead of painting all of it. I am a Ryobi girl too. Love their tools! Almost have them all! Thank you for taking the time to video your project so others can learn.

    I did this in my living room and used your plans for it. It's not as easy as it looks. I actually did it as an actual casing though, I didn't leave the drywall in the sills. I also did this to my front door so windows and door would match and for whoever else was wondering before, I used MDF. As long as you're painting it, it doesn't matter which material you use. You have to remember that MDF is only prepped on 3 sides so the fourth side will need to be primed and painted. I'm actually not done yet with the whole project. The door casing is just about done but I have a few more brads to set and then because whoever built my house originally did a crappy job of evening out the 2x4 studs the walls are uneven. I have to use shims behind some of the boards because like I said, I didn't just do this over drywall where it was flat. I had to transition from door or window jamb to drywall while is rarely even. The door looks amazing. Also, I added a crown trim at the middle 1x2 between the 1x6 and the 1x3. It looks legit. If I could post a pic of it here, I would because I am proud but thank you for sharing your plans and how you did it. I wouldn't have that I could do it if I hadn't seen you do it. It wasn't as easy as you made it look, but it's definitely worth it. The door went from like a 3 to a 10. If anyone is interested in seeing some pics, let me know.

    I've seen other's ask themselves the hard question: to remove the drywall returns around the window and install their own wood frame, or find a work around? I am glad to see you tried the work around, i think it is more practical for most people at home! Most will cringe thinking about removing their stool, let alone ripping the drywall all around the window!
    A general piece of advice I've been thinking about, and I haven't seen others try yet, is to first lightly sand the drywall in the area you want to frame the window - this will help that window frame sit flush because you have sanded down many of the hills and such that the frame is sitting on. I am curious as to your thoughts!

    Nice, I plan on doing a similar design on our windows in our house. I just about finished doing crown moulding in pretty much every part of the house. I really like the Big Stretch brand caulk. It can be painted over and doesn't crack. It WILL shrink though so sometimes two applications of it is needed, depending on the gap size you're filling.

    sand the edges of your boards prior to install, to knock down any proud slivers or burrs. The sanding block will do fine. Just don't apply so much pressure that you reshape the piece.

    Beautiful! I’m struggling because I just bought a. House remodeled in Craftsman style. The front window and door have the little squares in the corners and detailing, so I hate to take it down; however, I want this style in other parts of the house. Would this go with the other more detailed trim? Thanks! I have to let my painter know soon! Yipes! 💕

    • @miguelpalacios4536
      @miguelpalacios4536 4 года назад

      The rosettes you refer to as the squares in the corners is usually a Victorian or Georgian feature. I don't think the craftsman and the other styles clash at all. I have done this to my windows and front door in my living room for my renovation and there are several other smaller doors and doorways that I could not do this to and just used a more traditional colonial style trim and it looks good. I know your comment was from 10 months ago so your project is probably long done but just wanted to let you know since it doesn't look like anyone else responded to your comment.

    Most tape measures will say how long the housing is on the side so that you can add it what you read on the tape. Also, I like using metric tape measures for finish carpentry like this. The only thing I would have done different is use a brad nailer, but otherwise great video!

      It's hard to tell how long it took to complete. I broke it up in increments over three days. I work on projects randomly when I catch a second in the day! I'll need to tally up the cost but lumber was probably around $25. I'll double check that!

      Mariano Castillo thank you😀 This was my first time ever doing something like this, but here I used “Select Pine” from Home Depot for the top 1x3 & 1x2. The 1x4s and 1x6 I used were just white pine Common Boards. Using the Select Pine will give you the cleanest finish - more expensive though, but very smooth for trim (no knots like you’ll find on the Common Boards).

    • @derekresendes2984
      @derekresendes2984 6 лет назад +1

      Are you finding that the pine is expanding and contracting a lot? Soft wood can do that. Open joint and cracked caulk?

    • @MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen
      @MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen  6 лет назад

      Good point! Not that I've noticed. I did use a caulk specific for trim that expands and contracts without cracking... says the label on the bottle.

      1X2 select (for header)

    Kristy, thanks for wonderful video. This is exactly what I am trying to do with my windows. I had the same dilemma with blinds as I have expensive wood blinds, and would not want to try to cut all blinds including the metal header. I had same doubt if I can finish drywall just like wood(smooth). But your video gives me confidence. I am also thinking if it is possible to use white finished trim molding (Primed MDF) to reduce sanding and priming of the trim. Do you see any problem with using white trim molding instead of wood boards?

    • @MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen
      @MamaWantstoBuildbyKristyGreen  6 лет назад

      Thank you for your kind words! I've haven't used MDF before. However, when I do all my downstairs windows I am tempted to use pre-primed finger-joint pine boards to cut down on sanding and painting!

    • @miguelpalacios4536
      @miguelpalacios4536 4 года назад

      I realize your comment is from a few years ago, but I did this project recently and I used MDF. It is possible, you just have to paint the backside because it will be visible. Unless you just hope that no one ever gets on a table or ladder or something and can see the tops of the boards then I suppose you could go without painting them but that would look bad if you ever sold the home. It would look like you just cut corners everywhere.
