I have traveled extensively in Italy, and restaurants that open early are not necessarily traps for tourists. What I do look for is a smaller size menu written in Italian. You can easily ask if needed for any translations.

I certainly started learning Italian by myself and I find your content really helpful! In Bulgaria we also go to restaurant in order to relax, you also need to ask for your bill and the red wine is never cold. But the restaurants are always open. Also, you can't order tap water in a restaurant and you never actually get served a beverage with ice, unless you ask for it. Here you're not obligated to tip, but still it's highly recommended and considered as a good manner.
In Italy, waiters are paid like any other worker and are not considered servants. Tipping demeans work and makes those who have the money and can afford to give it feel good and superior.
@@giorgiodifrancesco4590 here is basically the same, the waiters get paid the same way as any other worker, but it’s normal for the waiters to not give you the change if it’s 0,50lv-5lv (depends on the restaurant and your bill)- they would normally take it as a tip themselves.
I've lived in the US for 15 years as an immigrant and still can't get used to ice in water. It's incredibly bad for your stomach. Instead, I request hot water with lemon and people look at me like I'm crazy. So I love it when I'm in Italy there is no such thing as ice in water 😅. In New York, it's incredibly common for waiters to hand you the check half way through your meal and it usually comes with a "no rush" (with a fake smile😂). I certainly appreciate not being rushed in Italy and the rest of Europe, but it's often confusing where to pay (is it at the table, over at the counter or somewhere in between 😄?). In the place (in puglia) where I am italians do drink water or coffee with ice. Because it is hot. Don't know about of they can ask it in restaurant. also I don't get, of you don't like iced water why are you trying to get used to it anyway?
@@VIProach I'm not trying to get used to it - it's an expression in English I guess, It means I've never accepted the idea. If I "got used to it", it means I accepted it and it became a habit of mine as well. I will never try to get used to iced water haha :) I can understand drinking water and coffee with ice in the summer, but in the US, they give you iced cold water in the winter!

❤I was aware of a lot of these rules but only because I have been to Italy a few times and most recently last summer for almost two months. I agree that tourists should respect a country’s norms and not expect things to be like at “home.” I have seen people get angry or upset about things being different from their home country and that is rude in my opinion. Do not travel if you do not want to experience the different ways people live around the world. One thing I don’t think Teacher Stefano mentioned and that I just learned last summer is that chicken and pasta do NOT go together in Italy. In America there are a lot of pasta dishes with chicken on restaurant menus. I made the mistake of requesting chicken in a pasta dish. Mamma Mia! I’m surprised I did not get kicked out. Puoi prendere il cappuccino a qualsiasi ora, magari se lo prendi con la pizza, ti guarderanno un po' strano, ma per il resto sono solo luoghi comuni. Da italiana lo prendo solo al mattino, ma da italiana dico che gli italiani sono un po stronzetti in fatto di cucina....credono di sapere tutto loro. Io ho mangiato magnificamente anche all estero, come ho mangiato da schifo anche in Italia ,specialmente nei luoghi turistici!!

When I was in Sicily (Lipari to be exact) I had spaghetti with clams. I made the mistake of asking for some parmesan cheese to sprinkle over it. The woman who owned the tiny restaurant with her husband replied, "Absolutely not!" She was nice but very firm with me. We had a good laugh about it because we had eaten at her restaurant every night. Boy did I learn something. No parmesan cheese with clams. Does this apply to anything related to the sea? Parmesan and seafood do not go together? In Sicily hardly anyone speaks English at all so it was extremely helpful to have learned Italian before I went over. And it was also very helpful to me that hardly anyone spoke English. I was forced to use my juvenile Italian and it was so much fun. The people in Sicily were so nice to us. 5 weeks in Sicily. A dream come true.

Thanks so much for your videos - I've just recently come across your channel and it's great for practicing my listening and comprehension - you speak very clearly and slow enough for me to be able to follow most of it. I've come across other Italians online saying the same thing about cappuccino. I've never come across any of them giving an actual reason for it... and you don't either. At least with the wine example you gave a reason.... but no reason for the cappuccino thing except... we just don't do that here and you can expect to be harshly judged for it. That's not a reason 🤣 ...Honestly, this rule with seemingly no reason attached to it makes it sound like Italians are quite rigid, judgemental, and rude. I'm sure that's not the case overall, but this particular type of thing definitely gives that impression, sadly. I would be interested in hearing if there's an actual explanation for it that makes sense 😊

@@justasomeone7860 There is actually a reason. In Italy breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. So you have to eat and drink something with a lot of calories to have enough energies to approach the day. Breakfast in Italy is always sweet, generally speaking a "cornetto" with a coffee or cappuccino. So cappuccino is considered quite a heavy drink to have for example in the afternoon or evening just right before going to bed, because there is milk and sugar and therefore very hard to digest. This is the main reason and I think it makes sense. And, tbh, there is also an unspoken secret about it. We all know this secret but never talk about it, especially with strangers or foreigners (because it is quite embarassing). Basically It's that milk (and sometimes also coffee) helps you to go to the bathroom (not urine, you know what I mean), so if you drink it in the middle of the afternoon while working or walking then there could be a problem bc you would have to run back home to do your business in the bathroom. Therefore it is also considered inconvenient.

Thank you for the excellent video, Stefano. An additional question: What is the polite way to ask for the bill? I have heard or read that making a “writing motion” in the air is definitely not polite (many places in the world including Italy!).
I always do the "writing motion" gesture, unless is a very elegant restaurant. Just stare at the waiter/waitress in a gentle way asking for that and should be polite enough. On the other hand if the waiter/waitress is close to you, you can use the already mentioned "Scusi, ci può portare il conto" with or without the gesture

Puoi prendere il cappuccino a qualsiasi ora, magari se lo prendi con la pizza, ti guarderanno un po' strano, ma per il resto sono solo luoghi comuni.
Da italiana lo prendo solo al mattino, ma da italiana dico che gli italiani sono un po stronzetti in fatto di cucina....credono di sapere tutto loro. Io ho mangiato magnificamente anche all estero, come ho mangiato da schifo anche in Italia ,specialmente nei luoghi turistici!!

😂😂😂Due risate le ho fatte, quando hai detto che, se ordini il cappuccino dopo pranzo o cena fai schifo agli occhi dei camerieri, non è affatto vero, ognuno può ordinarlo liberamente, però se hai mangiato una frittura di pesce ti sei bevuto una bottiglia di vino, con insalata e patatine fritte, o altro a base di carne, o la pizza 4 stagioni, e poi ordini il cappuccino, il cameriere ti guarda strano, perché pensa che forse non hai il tempo di arrivare a casa, perché ti viene il cagotto 😂😂😂

When I was in Sicily (Lipari to be exact) I had spaghetti with clams. I made the mistake of asking for some parmesan cheese to sprinkle over it. The woman who owned the tiny restaurant with her husband replied, "Absolutely not!" She was nice but very firm with me. We had a good laugh about it because we had eaten at her restaurant every night. Boy did I learn something. No parmesan cheese with clams. Does this apply to anything related to the sea? Parmesan and seafood do not go together? In Sicily hardly anyone speaks English at all so it was extremely helpful to have learned Italian before I went over. And it was also very helpful to me that hardly anyone spoke English. I was forced to use my juvenile Italian and it was so much fun. The people in Sicily were so nice to us. 5 weeks in Sicily. A dream come true.

Sbagli peró quando parli del cappuccino cioé, é vero che si beve soprattutto al mattino ma devo dire che ogni volta che l'ho chiesto in altri momenti della giornata nessuno ha fatto scene. Tu hai esagerato, il cappuccino si puó bere quando di vuole senza nessun tipo di problema.

Thanks so much for your videos - I've just recently come across your channel and it's great for practicing my listening and comprehension - you speak very clearly and slow enough for me to be able to follow most of it.
I've come across other Italians online saying the same thing about cappuccino. I've never come across any of them giving an actual reason for it... and you don't either. At least with the wine example you gave a reason.... but no reason for the cappuccino thing except... we just don't do that here and you can expect to be harshly judged for it. That's not a reason 🤣 ...Honestly, this rule with seemingly no reason attached to it makes it sound like Italians are quite rigid, judgemental, and rude. I'm sure that's not the case overall, but this particular type of thing definitely gives that impression, sadly.
I would be interested in hearing if there's an actual explanation for it that makes sense 😊

@@justasomeone7860 There is actually a reason. In Italy breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day. So you have to eat and drink something with a lot of calories to have enough energies to approach the day. Breakfast in Italy is always sweet, generally speaking a "cornetto" with a coffee or cappuccino. So cappuccino is considered quite a heavy drink to have for example in the afternoon or evening just right before going to bed, because there is milk and sugar and therefore very hard to digest. This is the main reason and I think it makes sense.
And, tbh, there is also an unspoken secret about it. We all know this secret but never talk about it, especially with strangers or foreigners (because it is quite embarassing).
Basically It's that milk (and sometimes also coffee) helps you to go to the bathroom (not urine, you know what I mean), so if you drink it in the middle of the afternoon while working or walking then there could be a problem bc you would have to run back home to do your business in the bathroom. Therefore it is also considered inconvenient.

I always do the "writing motion" gesture, unless is a very elegant restaurant. Just stare at the waiter/waitress in a gentle way asking for that and should be polite enough. On the other hand if the waiter/waitress is close to you, you can use the already mentioned "Scusi, ci può portare il conto" with or without the gesture
