Darrell's concern for Dale after the crash will never be forgotten.
To me, that is the race that defines DW's broadcast career in 'calling' that last lap: The very best & the very worst all happening at he same time.
You could see the concern in his face and voice. Thats when we knew it was bad
@@dandahl5964 Same here..
And to think that was his first race call
“I just hope dales ok” -DW 2001 Daytona 500
Boogity boogity boogity, let's go golfin'! Enjoy retirement, Darrell!
Boogity boogity boogity! Let’s go get coffee boys!
Thanks for the memories Darrell! Ah, the old days of NASCAR....
Darrell is the only voice for color I have ever known in this sport. He is very much a part of the reason why I grew to love this sport. The man is absolutely irreplaceable with his infectious energy and knowledge. I hope that it is heavily considered to put him in the Hall of Fame TWICE - as a driver, and as a broadcaster, because it is absolutely a deserving honor, whom very few may ever match. Congratulations on a fabulous career, and THANK YOU so much for all you have done.
Pucknerd well said and agree 1000% on your comments. Not a huge NASCAR fan myself. However when Darrell was commenting on the race especially Daytona, I would watch. No doubt he is the John Madden of NASCAR/Auto Racing Commentators in America, maybe the best ever in his field. So of course he should be in the NASCAR HOF as an Broadcaster as well.
@W Mills No offense but I doubt the top previous NASCAR analyst/color commentator on mainly CBS and ABC such as David Hobbs, Jackie Stewart (for old school Formula 1 race fans)and Ned Jarret got that much media attention when they retired or was replaced.
It’s been for sure changing over the past few years and I can’t stand NBC Sports anyway except for JR and if DW does leave FOX damn sure needs to pick up JR cause FOX is loosing for sure a legend and they would be doomed without the Mac
Man this hurts deep inside. I grew up watching DW in the booth and it hurts that now he's retiring.
Boogity, Boogity, Boogity! We'll miss you DW!
Same
RowdyWitson same
I started watching DW in the late 80's when he drove for Rick H in the Tide Ride. While he did not win a championship in that car, it was usually in contention for the win. I always felt he raced people respectfully, similar to Mark Martin. He was my favorite. Then he started his own team with Western Auto (the coolest paint scheme out there) that had some early success, but quickly turned into a non competitive team. I hoped every Sunday would be a turn around, but it rarely happened. For several years he used the champions provisional to make the field, and usually could not stay on the lead lap. That was far more disappointing to me than his retirement from TV. When I realize its been 25 yrs since the Western Auto car raced, I feel a little sad and old
My all time favorite commentating crew - Alan, Ned and Benny.

Nascar is truly doomed it just keeps getting further and further from the sport i used to love
And it all began with Brian france
Not here man. Not here
I know that's right. Although I don't believe Nascar's got anything to do with Darryl retiring. He worked for FOX Sports, didn't he?
I hope NASCAR survives these rough times.
Nah, it's coming back. Yes, they tried to go mainstream and that ruined them, but now that the popular fad of it is wearing off we can get back to what we love.
Sad, but we all knew it was gonna happen someday.
Thank you for bringing me into the wonderful world of NASCAR, Darrell. I will truly miss your announcing.
A beloved icon he will be sorely missed from the sport
You're a class act Mr. Waltrip. Enjoy your retirement.
Kinda sad to hear this, but it’s only fair. Thank you D.W. for the memories you have brought to this sport!
DW brings a very good vibe and exciting calls, things are gonna be little different without him now
People can say what they want about DW but he was one of the greats .
A. Ellenburg no one is perfect. DW is part of why Hendrick is so embedded and successful. DW is a bigger part of this sport than I feel he ever got recognition for. He’s always been a goofy guy and I just think some people take him the wrong way. Sad to see him retire but I’m very happy that he has a good future to look towards.
Still is
Your the best Darrell Waltrip….Thanks for all the years … Your by far my all time fav.... Enjoy your retirement.
Boogity boogity boogity, race home great man, time for family. Greatest call ever, when Mickey won the 500, and we lost Dale. NASCAR will never be the same without you.
You'll be missed dw boogity boogity boogity
Maybe by you! Way past his time...
Don Karstedt kay
Thank You For Every Turn Darrell and all The Memories...You Are One Of the Greatest Of All Time ........
Darrel Waltrip is going to be missed. Beyond all of the trash talk on twitter and other social media theres still a man in there and that man happens to be a 3 time cup champion and a HOF. Deserves as much respect as Jimmie Johsnon. Hes given his blood to this sport and the sport should be thankful which I think it is. Thank you Darrel will miss sharing my sundays with you and hearing your excited voice.
Thanks for all the Great years and all the Boogity Boogity Boogity Let's Go Racin Boyz.
Darrell was the best commentator that I have ever known. The impact that he has left on this sport is tremendous. I hear stories from my grandpa about DW's encounters with Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough. Stories from my Mom and Dad about his last win and final years in a car. And the stories I will tell my kids about Darrell's unforgettable commentary skills. Darrell Waltrip 33 years racing and 19 years of broadcasting. A legendary career. Happy Retirement Darrell. BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY LET'S GO LEGEND
actually 29 years racing I beliace
My heart is breaking now. It seems as if we are loosing all of our greats. I remember playing with a Darrell Waltrip car as a kid. I cried with Darrell and shared in his happiness when Mikey won Daytona and Dale died. Nascar will not be the same without you Mr. Waltrip.
Ill miss ya Mr. Waltrip. Thank you for all the blood sweet and tears you put into this sport. Thank you for all the great memories. Boogidy boogidy boogidy!
Congrats DW. You’ll be missed buddy. Thanks for helping make NASCAR my all time favorite sport. Sunday’s won’t ever be the same.
You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel...classic forever!! Made me laugh...driver an entertainer!
I’ll never forget seeing this mans excitement over seeing his little brother win the Daytona 500 and seconds later realizing he may have lost a close friend.... Enjoy your grandchild DW .. it’s been a blast to watch you throughout my life! God Bless!
I WIL miss you Darrell. I've watched you since I was a kid. Blessings on you!!!
NASCAR has never had nor will ever have, a better face than Darrell Waltrip. He's as real as it gets, and one of the most humble people you'd ever meet.
Thank you DW I've been a fan of yours since the 70's as a driver and then as an announcer. You will be missed.
Darrell, you and Stevie enjoy your life. Have fun !!!!!! I'll miss you, but you were awesome to watch and listen to.
All the very very best to you.
When both Mike Joy and Waltrip leave broadcasting from Fox is done.
Major facts.
Boring would be a good description because, their calls raises the hype on the broadcasts
Hopefully Mike hangs around a few more seasons
Nascar is done
Freedom of Everything don’t forget Matt Benedetto
Been a fan since the 70's.love you dw.
Take care and God bless.
Grand marshal 2020 Daytona 500! "Drivers, start your engines, boogity boogity boogity!"
I hope so
DW, you are the reason I have been a NASCAR fan since 1972...Thank You,enjoy your retirement..
NASCAR will not be the same without Darrell Waltrip !!! He is a class act !
Darrell , Thank You for the memories . Your going to be missed . It's time for you and your family , live it up while you can!! god bless you and your family .
Dang DW man this hurts ,but I hope you enjoy your retirement
Thanks for the years D W
Was great to watch you as a cocky driver. Was great to watch you as a very knowledgable broadcaster. Was great to watch you sitting there with your lovely wife, getting ready to figure what happens next. Thank you Mr.Waltrip for years of entertainment and some great Saturday evenings and enjoyable Sunday afternoons.
I still remember he was called "Jaws" back in the 1980s
I grew up watching dw race, and listening to him call the races after he stopped racing. Will truly miss the way he calls a race, no one else can do it better. Enjoy your retirement DW ,you earned it
I'm from the land down under and the best memory of him was the incar commentry when he went around Mt Panorama at Bathurst at full speed. Just his voice plus his description of the Mountain while holding on for grim death shows how great a commentators he was I sincerely hope that he and his wife both enjoy their retirement plans !!!
Gonna miss hearing him calling races from the booth.. big time. I hope his retirement years are awesome!
I love you Darrell and Stevie. I remember years ago I was 15 asking for a autograph and Darrell walked into the camper and Stevie said hold on lol I’ll get him.
I Love Darrell Waltrip so much. Followed him from the time NASCAR started televising races. Was a proud member of his fan club for many many years. There has always been something about him and how he does it. He could talk smack, but always backed it up. Fans today just don't realize how good that guy was behind the wheel (and in the Booth too!) Thank You...Thank You for the Memories Darrell. Don't be a stranger. #17 FOREVER!
Sorry to see you go DW. I rooted for you in the 70's before you were a famous driver because I knew you were good. I watched you set on the pole at MIS and lead flag to flag and win the race. Great times. Thanks for all the memories
We will miss ya in the booth DW. Our loss will be your family's gain. It's been a joy to listen to you call the races all these years. All my best to you and your family. Stay busy and God bless! =)
I ❤️ DW. Just pure joy for racing and NASCAR. He was born to race and to talk and he has had two amazing careers.
Well said my friend, You have done your fair share for the sport... Time for family and me time... Watched the first race on TV and have been a fan ever since. I hope the younger generation of drivers have gleemed some of your wisdom and experiences off of you and make very good use of that information and add their take to the sport You will be missed!... Thank You, Darrell and Stevie, for sharing him with us.
DW sit back and enjoy your grandchildren, like we have enjoyed you for so many years! You have so many stories to tell them. I have followed you for as long as I can remember.. THANKS FOR THE RIDE!
I haaaate the idea of DW leaving the booth. It hurts my heart more than I can explain. But I love the idea of Darrell getting to spend more time with his family & especially his new grandchild. He’s so earned that, by giving us all so much. The man is simply a treasure, and one I’m not only thankful for but better for having ‘had’ him in my life. I’m not sure I’d have ever really become a fan without him.
Good luck & God bless, Mr & Mrs Waltrip. Thank you both so much. 👏🏼❤️🙏🏼
Darrell, thank you for the memories. You will be missed.
I've watched you for many years behind the wheel and as a broadcaster. You're a great man with a great family. It's time to take a break with no guilt. Love you and your family.
I saw him win at pocono that was a great race. Thanks for the memories you were a great race car driver.
Thank you DW for all of your years of dedication to the the sport of Nascar. We will definitely miss you being there next year!! Hope you enjoy retirement and you live out the rest of your years happy with your beautiful wife.
People that say racing is terrible these days can now say it's even worse. Thank you DW for all you have done for racing. Hopefully you have many more years to enjoy retirement and most of all have fun!!
Darrell, I'm going to miss you.
Dang D.W. ! 72 ? Ya look good olboy. It was great to watcha drive. It was good to hear you speak in the announcers booth. You have a good one. One of the greats right here people.
I have never disliked any nascar driver. I always felt sad whenever a driver or personality leaves the sport. you as motor mouth of the century will always be remembered as a great driver, personality and spokesperson. best wishes in your retirement. my mother, a post WW2 wife and racer, instilled a love for the sport that has never left. salute!!!
Were gonna miss you enjoy the years to come brother, kick back and have fun!
I'll never forget your racing career and it was awesome to have you in the booth and the memory of you on that day when your little brother won Daytona and when we lost Earnhardt,, you gave us your raw emotion and your heart and it will live in my memories till the day i die.
Anybody who loves racing knows its a joy to be around the guys and family's you make through the years.
Its a special thing indeed. DW enjoy your retirement you've earned it in spades my friend
Darrell Waltrip thank you for everything that you have done for the sport of NASCAR for the entertainment that you have brought to it for me since I have been watching it since the 70"s & still do to this day that you will be Sadly missed from the booth. Good luck with your retirement. 😎
Great guy, I used to love NASCAR more than anything and now I don't watch a race , just a corporate game , Darrel has to feel the same
DW......love you but your doing the right thing. Let the next crop of ex drivers pick up the mic and carry on for you. Thanks for the memories!
Take Care And God Bless Ya JAWS!
Thank you DW. You have made our lives better.
perhaps it's time, chemistry's different without larry mac there; still I'll miss DW
ABOUT TIME....he was a better driver than broadcaster.
I grew up at Franklin County Speedway in Callaway Virginia and I remember when the big times came to town. Darrell came to this track. I never was able to race, but boy was in my blood. I recently started doing HPDE events about 4 years ago and what an experience. I hope retirement with your family is wonderful and thank you for all you have done!
Darrell Waltrip is someone to truly look up to he will be missed tremendously among my family and I. So hats off to you D.W. Your an inspiration and I loved to watch you race and also is someone who keeps this sport alive!
Nascar has not been the same for a long time now. It will DEFINITELY not be anymore.
I agree. When Dale Earnhardt died, part of NASCAR died with him. With D.W. retiring...I don't know. Sometimes I don't know if NASCAR knows.
I've always started the season listening to the classic boogity boogity boogity. The very first Daytona I watched- 2012- was, as Darrell would say, "One Whale" of a race. Thank you for everything Dale. We're gonna miss you.
Allen Bestwick needs to take over DW
GrilledSteak17 OMG!!! Could you imagine
Doesn't Bestwick work for NBC Sports though?
Allen is the lead though in the booth. It could only happen when Mike leaves the booth.
I watched him race back in the great days of nascar ... With petty sr. Yarbrough and all the rest.. Then watching in the booth. Thankyou D.W. for all you've given to us the fans and to the sport! Enjoy your family quality time you definitely deserve it!
I watch Darrell waltrip come from The bottom all the way to the top as a little boy to a grown man he's always been one of my favorites and always will be . God bless you on your retirement DW
Im going to miss hearing this guy soo much... Love just how genuine a person he is..
Take care DW
Morpheen999 are you serious ????
My racing career was a short 2 yrs at Bakersfield Speedway, loved every minute of it. Racing will always be in your heart.
Its epic....such an icon. Enjoy DW !!!
I can't think of anyone I would miss more in NASCAR...JUST FUN TO LISTEN TOO. The love for racing comes thru the microphone.
When you talked about June bug it was obvious that it went way back and was pure friendship.
If there's one thing that brings me happiness out of 7 days of the week, it would without a doubt be Darrel Waltrip in the booth. Thankyou DW for everything and enjoy the rest of this season.
isnt NASCAR about ready to retire?
I actually chuckled at this comment
On 2/18/01 it died dale sr death ended nascar
Thank God !
Thanks for the memories DW well miss you.
Thank you, Darrell, for your years of service to NASCAR as a driver and a broadcaster. For... various reasons, I haven't watched NASCAR in quite some time, but when I did, I always looked forward to the races Fox covered. Enjoy retirement!
What a ride thank Darrell for all you have done for us be safe
Thanks for the ride DW......never forget sitting in turn four at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1989 and seeing your car spin right in front of me after trading paint with Rusty Wallace in The Winston. Never forget hearing you say " I hope he chokes on that $200,000" over the loud speaker. Always a fan but that day made me even more of a fan. Godspeed DW!!!
Thank God. I can turn the volume up if I actually watch a race again.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Darrell, way to be the better person and go out on your own terms. Don't let the Jenna Fryer article in the AP get you down. After all that article was published on April 1st!! Enjoy retirement, and for those who truly enjoy the history of racing and nascar know that you will be missed!!
Thank you DW IM 60 YEARS OLD AND A FAN OF ALL KINDS OF MOTOR SPORTS WE WILL MISS YOU FOR SURE AGAIN THANK YOU.
Thank god!
Darrell was a great driver but more importantly he is a good man. Loved watching him race, enjoyed him as commentator. The old stories and anecdotes. Who ever comes behind him will have big shoes to fill. Happy Trails DW and thanks for the memories (Icky shuffle in Daytona victory lane, chrome car, and yeah, 3 Championships).
Remember my first race ever. Rockingham, October, 1989. #17 Tide Car. Darrell Waltrip. I still have the hat and ticket stub. I've been a fan since. Thank You for the memories Sir (DW).
God bless u DW , much love!!! Been a fan since your first race!
I'm sure going to miss YOU DW. Have a wonderful retirement Darrel.
Good Luck throughout the rest of the season DW you’ll be missed
Thanks for everything you've done for this sport, DW. It sure has been one heck of a ride! May God continue to bless you and yours!
Like Darrell, but he had to go. NASCAR had passed him by and Jeff Gordon had to correct him often and I think Darrell wants to spend some time with family. I feel like he raced a little bit too long until he wasn't competitive and I think he was in the booth too long but I think now that he knows that it is time to step away and be with his family. I could see him doing some other TV work as well. He'll never leave NASCAR and it won't leave him either.
Darrel is more old school and Jeff actually drove the cars so that’s accurate... but I love and will miss his will to actually learn
That's a good point. I've noticed that quite a bit. Darrell will say something and Jeff will have to come in and politely correct him, and Darrell will handle it like a pro. But you can't have that forever.
Evan Williams its important he stayed in as long as he did older racers always have input
Sad day, I'm gonna miss Darrell!
No more “BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY! LET’S GO RACIN’ DRIVERS!” 😭
Thanks Darrell! You'll be missed! Enjoy your retirement!
What a genuine heartfelt speech.
Thanks, DW!
