  • We bought an auction lot that contained a Toshiba VHS to DVD combi unit DVD-DVR20.
    We turned it on to test it but when we turned it on it shuts down after a few seconds. This ended up being a long video as I read that a diode could be the problem but in the end it just turned out to be dirt.

    This video helped finally fix my DVR 620!!! After several hours and RUclips videos, I came across this video, and I was going thru the same issue with the machine shutting down after attempting to play a VHS tape. It was still shutting down after disassembly and cleaning of the mode switch, like what happened to you in the video. 😡Cleaning the little LED piece finally fixed it ("lightpipe", I think you called it)!
    Funny how such a small piece can cause so much trouble! Like yours, it wasn't even very dirty as far as I could see - maybe a small bit of dust on the part that goes over that little black gear. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you very much for this video!

    You should do a how to fix the flash bulb on a Sony a330 camera. Because.... okay I have bought one and I thought for sure it'd be a quick settings reset or firmware update, but its actually the bulb. Doesn't look complicated but nothing really does until it goes sideways.
    Also its good you are back, hope this lockdown thing isn't causing too much trouble on the home front, been seeing too many people rubbing each other the wrong way due to being home with each other 24/7 for weeks.

    Fix 3 solved it for me! Done 5 tapes already, all worked great. Picture clarity on this unit is unparalleled, for both composite and hdmi. Note use
    480 composite for copied VHS tapes. Upscaling 480 to 1080 doesn't look the best. Higher resolutions for DVD. Thanks again for the fix!

      @@RetroElectronicRepair well that was over an hour of my life I won't get back 😆 but I went straight in with cleaning the light lens - the owners (sat there reading a bible - maybe hoping for divine intervention 🙄) weren't really able to say what the issue was other than it 'stopped playing' - I couldn't see any weirdness initially, the DVD side seemed fine, but the VHS was sometimes doing odd things but loading and playing okay for the most part. I also tried cleaning the rotary switch underneath as you did and then feared I'd made things worse as it wouldn't then load the tape 🤦‍♂ but I think it was the door catching on the front lever - so put it all back together and the SCART output (yah don't ask me why they were using that over the HDMI) went dark though the lower one seemed fine, not sure what happened there - I suggested they take it away and connect via HDMI and keep an eye on any weirdness - it was all pretty clean inside and didn't exhibit anything odd beyond that 🤷‍♂

    • @RetroElectronicRepair
      @RetroElectronicRepair  Год назад +1

      So hard to say what was wrong with that one then. The scart sockets are 1 for input and one for output to tv, that's maybe why one gave you a blank screen. But yes they should hook up the HDMI it will be a much better picture.

    • @Umski
      @Umski Год назад +1

      @@RetroElectronicRepair yes it's weird, the top SCART was for the output and was working okay until the lid went on and then it went dark - it's as if the luminance part of the composite went missing, the lower one for the input worked fine, so they are still connected internally - anecdotally this has always been the case with VCRs in my experience - it's also weird seeing such a grainy 240 line image having been used to 576, 720, 1080 and more recently 4K 😂

    I'm experiencing the same issue.
    The switch mode is completely out of order (the 3 copper pins are twisted and it is not possible to put them back in correct position).
    So would you please let me know if someone in this world sells this component?
    In the service manual from Toshiba it is identified as SW507. But they don't give the part ref.
    Thanks again!!!
    Best regards.

    This video is awesome. I tried cleaning up the light sensor with some rubbing alcohol first this didnt resolve it for me. I had to clean up the mode switch as this was covered in grease from the goons at the factory during assembly must have made its way in. I reset the white plastic dial to its home position as indicated on the circuit board then wound the locating cog above using the runners on the side. Following re-assembly it all worked just make sure you plug in all ribbon cables again securely as i missed one and it stopped working completely! Nice work man resolved the issue with the same model KB version. I think the resistor part isn’t the issue with most. Try fix 2 and 3 before doing this! My symptoms were that the machine turned off after you inserted a tape

    • @RetroElectronicRepair
      @RetroElectronicRepair  2 года назад

      Glad you got this one fixed. The mode switch does have a small amount of grease on the lid so the plastic doesn't stick but over time I think some gets on the contacts.

  • @ronwest5163
    @ronwest5163 11 месяцев назад +1

    A little dielectric grease on the mode switch will keep the contacts from oxidizing and that sensor which that light shines on should be wiped off too.

    I had exactly same failure on my device with the 3 in 1 Funai TD6D-D4413DB VCR/DVD/HDD Recorder (exactly the same build like this Toshiba 2 in 1 Recorder. I also cleaned this light emitting plastic in the middle and the problem is fixed. I think the manufacturer should add a anti dust filter to the fan and to the chassis to prevent any dust to build in inside this device I bought a dust filter and build it inside the fan (and the chassis and now my device is cooling and also preventing any dust to go inside. It it now working for more than 5 years without any problems. But like I said even this Toshiba branded VCR DVD Recorder is engineered and build from Funai Electronics and only rebranded as Toshiba.

      It is a permanent fix until the dust will block the sensor again. this Funai/Toshiba devices should have a build in dust protection shield but the manufacturers didn't build it in so for me it is a small engineering failure, or maybe they did it on purpose for faster malfunction and sadly to throw away the unit 😞

Took cover off, failed again. Put back on and fine again so confirmed the light pollution theory. Drum was a little stiff but freed just by turning manually. Cheers buddy!

    I also have a RDXV59DT which gives a ‘disc read error’, I know it’s not the drive or laser etc as both units share the disc drive assembly part and I’ve tested it by fitting into the DVR19DT it read discs fine.

      If it turns on for a moment the you should be able to constantly hit the eject button and it might eject. Otherwise it depends on the model, some have a cog on the side on the tape mechanism that you can turn to release the tape. On some others you will need to remove the whole tape deck to get to the cogs underneath to manually rotate them and eject the tape. I hope this helps.

    What a stupid design. The whole unit shuts down just because of a bit of dirt in the light pipe and crappy mode switch, which has nothing to do with the DVD or HDD functions. I have one of these with the same powering on/off symptom so i'll definitely clean the mode switch and light pipe. I won't put any new grease on the mode switch. I'll also replace D1150 with a 3A schottky or ultrafast diode. If they hadn't used so much grease on/in mode switch in the first place it wouldn't attract dust.
