Christopher Guest as Corky St. Clair and Parker Posey as Libby Mae Brown performing "A Penny For Your Thoughts" in Corky's play "Red, White and Blaine".
I love how Libby is doing the dance moves of someone who told the choreographer that they took ballet but failed to mention it was, like, when they were 11.
A major factor of the comedy for me is how earnestly this song is performed. And it’s actually a nice little song! Amazing talents all around wrapped up in a sweet small-town musical play. 💖
This scene slays me every time. This over the top effeminate man portraying a rugged WW1 soldier. It’s friggen hilarious. There’s no way I could have been there with a straight face. 🤣
I agree with Albert! Those shouldn’t get lost. Believe it or not, my 11 year old son has convinced his piano teacher (also a Guffman fan) to teach him all the Guffman songs on piano. He has Stool Boom and Nothing Ever Happens on Mars pretty well down. But they’re just figuring it all out by ear. It would be a real treasure if you could post those!
1) Michael Hitchcock is incredibly funny 2) I love that the role of the WW1 soldier is obviously meant to go to a young, strapping man (i.e. Johnny before he dropped out of the production) and Corky assumes it in his place
Loved Hitchcock screaming "CORKY!!" at the end. :) Really enjoyed Matt Keeslar (Johnny) in "The Middleman". Glad that Brian Ward of Shout!Factory suggested it to me a few years ago as I'd never seen or heard of the show, before.
If anyone is in theatre and notice the blocking, it is sooooo ridiculous!!! There is no reason for them to move the way they do, which makes it so magical!
Oh wow, this movie is so great. So,some mentioned it here before, but I have to also say, my favorite part of this is the completely forced and unnatural way the characters do their blocking. Anyone who's taken a class or has done theater, this is so dead-on funny. The whole cast is magnificent at playing bad actors.
I've probably seen this movie more than 20 times, and I'm still discovering levels of humor....just little, subtle things they do that so thoroughly nail real people.
As someone who has done a LOT of local/highschool theater I can confirm that almost every single production I have been in that involved dancing also involved a very shaky arabesque.
The genius of this movie is that the play it's about is...pretty good. They're amateurs, they're not talented, they're just people in the town, but there's a simple charm and an art to it that makes it entertaining to watch
I haven’t seen this movie/heard this song in ages. I just woke up and this song was in my head. So now I’m watching this video because I guess the Universe told me to.
This film, an enchanting exploration of the hopes and fears of small-town America, was mostly wasted on its market. Incredible though it seems, “Guffman” bombed in theaters and cost its producers a lot of money.
Do you think Corky decided to wear some sort of muscle suit corset to under his 1st World War uniform?! His body shape seems suspiciously altered from the first act...
The brilliance of this movie is that the musical is bad, but not THAT bad. It's charming and entertaining and darnn it, I'd buy a ticket to see it if I was in Blaine.
The joke isn't that they're amateur or professional, it's that they think they have a shot at Broadway. Obviously, how tragically bad they are is exaggerated for comedic effect, but I remember doing loads of community theatre and no one ever fancied we'd move to NYC let alone the Great White Way.
The romantic in me wanted Corky and Steve Stark to get together in the end, but that wouldn't be realistic. Steve Stark has to remain in Blaine, deeply, completely and always closeted, while Corky settles into being an eccentric old queen with his Hollywood memorabilia shop. But at least he's in New York.
I picked up a copy at a local Half Price Books a few years ago. You might want to check those out from time to time. Also, if there are a few in your area, the staff may check around for you on titles you may be looking for which might be at their other shops.
OMG I have the VHS “screener” from when I worked at a rental store when it came out 😂 I think the promo poster as well. I was obsessed and in my small Missouri town, go figure, no one else seemed to get the humor and they were all like…take it, it’s yours..weirdo 😂😂😂
Can someone who's familiar with theater blocking explain to me what's so wrong with these movements? To my uneducated self, the only parts that really looked out of place were the swaying at the beginning, and that totally bizarre way they curled up at the end.
I have been a stage manager for 15 years. I don’t honestly know that the blocking here is particularly terrible. I have never watched this and thought “omg, the blocking!” Most of the positions they take are done so they can do their ridiculous high kicks and other dance moves and move around the stage. Is any of it necessary? No. Is any of it natural? No. But the blocking isn’t any more silly than the song and performance itself, in my opinion. The strangest thing about the scene is them walking in place in the beginning. 🤣 I have never ever seen anyone do that in a play.
basically the first thing you're taught in drama is to move on your line. You're not supposed to move, then speak. You should be doing both at the same time. So the way Parker is taking these huge strides across the stage, then speaking, then doing it again in the opposite direction is so hilariously awkward if you've ever been in a play and been told repeatedly to NOT do that.
Tell me the post malone doritos commercial face tattoo of a dorito chip is fake! 🤞 Usually I'd be like, oh haha funny fake doritos tat. But it's Posty.. he's always doing weird shit. Lol
I love This Bulging River, but it would have severely interrupted the flow of the movie. Same with Posey’s absolutely genius audition monologue (which is one of the funniest, nuanced things I’ve ever seen). At least we have them as bonus features!
I love how Libby is doing the dance moves of someone who told the choreographer that they took ballet but failed to mention it was, like, when they were 11.

there is no way Streisand is as talented as corky
I totally agree! 😂👍
agree

Right! 😆😆 When he described his sweeping construction hat, I laughed so hard the first time I watched it.
Michael Hitchcock's adoring looks from the audience sew this whole sequence into utter comedy. That guy cracks me up!
It's too bad the video cuts out before his last reaction shot during the applause.
“Corkaaaay! Corkaaaay!!!” 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
His tears steaming down his face. 😂
Michael Hitchcock steals the movie. So hysterical.
GOD I WISH I WAS IN THIS SHOW!!! 😂😂😂
OMG - her "ballet" moves are so FUNNY. I love this movie so much.
the woman pianist is the pianist at my church. She still has the sheet music for all these songs
Andrew Jeannett You should take photos of the sheet music and upload them online so they don’t get lost in time.
I agree with Albert! Those shouldn’t get lost. Believe it or not, my 11 year old son has convinced his piano teacher (also a Guffman fan) to teach him all the Guffman songs on piano. That is amazing. 😁
The most talented folks acting like the least talented folks. Genius.
iluvj50 So right!
Well said.
So good

Love those out-of-place high kicks! LOL
omnipop staple of community theatre
Goose stepping love song.
Also the out of place insertion of, I “reckon” were in love. 😂

Genius ! It’s so hard to act and sing that badly. I love how corky’s costumes fit so badly
Parker Posey pretending that she can't sing very well.... utterly brilliant.
I've probably seen this movie more than 20 times, and I'm still discovering levels of humor....just little, subtle things they do that so thoroughly nail real people.
“It’s just sometimes I feel as if I don’t really know you”
Lol! Love her blocking
"AND YES, PERHAPS DIE!"
Next to Spinal Tap, this is the second best of these films....hilarious....
Their genius is to write a song that is bad but very melodic and enjoyable.
GOD I WISH I WAS IN THE SHOW! Epic!
If only half of what's on Broadway today were this entertaining...
This movie was probably the longest, best told gay joke ever told.
Omg yes definitely
Normally, acknowledging a gay joke is not progressive, because it is a struggle for so many. 25 years later seems like a victory laugh.
"A bright, copper pinny"
all of it is so funny! Anyone notice how pro the orchestra is in contrast to the deliciously awful acting?
I love how he wears a helmet just to walk down the street with his girlfriend
+cat thornberg but then he hands it off to......somewhere
@@simonster-9094 The stage manager. 🤣
2:27, The part with sheila fixing ron's hair?
I just noticed that in the scene after that Ron wears a hat the entire time....
As someone who has done a LOT of local/highschool theater I can confirm that almost every single production I have been in that involved dancing also involved a very shaky arabesque.
Corky for president. This is one of the funniest comedies EVER made.
Filmed here in Texas in Lockhart. Just outside of Austin as the fictional Blaine, Missouri.
And original thought they were in California because of the smell of salt wattah.
"Ima, i'm going to fight for my country!"
love the whole gang in all their movies!!
& this song is one of my favourites
Is it so wrong to love this song?
spikeitfool1 It's actually catchy, which is the joke of the scene
Its soo sweet!
Did you release that deep sigh of identifying with the characters by Mrs Doctor Pearl or produce tears like Pharmacist Steve?
The genius of this movie is that the play it's about is...pretty good. They're amateurs, they're not talented, they're just people in the town, but there's a simple charm and an art to it that makes it entertaining to watch
I like what you have written here, TheMt45, it says it all in a pithy manner.
I haven’t seen this movie/heard this song in ages. I just woke up and this song was in my head. So now I’m watching this video because I guess the Universe told me to.
Corky better strut on that stage with his military uniform. Just a manly man 😆😆
I used to watch this over and over. Time goes by so quickly. What wonderful performance.
CORKY! CORKY! (i love the inclusion of Steve at the beginning, ha)
Corky is so sweet and pathetic...I love his innocence
Michael Hitchcock is hysterical.
I love this song.
"after that you can work on yourself"
Check out Corky's bend at the end! Too Funny! SO FAR FROM YOUR SIDE! The wind of freedom blowing through the Hairrr! I love this movie!
1:00 his inappropriately enthusiastic expression, I almost died 😆🤣😂 the funniest parts of this movie are actors reacting to the other actors
God, I wish I was in the show!
Anyone notice the stagehand in black walking across the stage with the lamp post to simulate motion while Corky and Libby are walking in place?
Utterly guileless performance. Very tender.
I'm going to cry...nope ..it passed.
Proof that Parker Posey is actually a pretty decent singer! See A Mighty Wind for further proof of this.
She was a champion gymnast and has a dancer’s credentials, too.
@@johntechwriter Dang, didn't know that! No wonder she's always been so damn slim. She's even more talented than I thought!

They are that bad!
Christopher Guest mockumentaries are set in an alternate universe where nobody has a lick of self-awareness.
He’s goose-stepping 😆
And that’s Barbra Streisand! Lol. Love how much he admires Corky. And don’t f**k with his stamp machine. 😂
And the Core Key Message is... powder puff parody. Adorable and all that.
If you have never seen this hilarious farce, WATCH IT TODAY for nonstop camp! A treasure-- Waiting For Guffman.
I love the end, how they fall down

Love this movie! I just checked Amazon and a copy is going for something like $35.00 on DVD. Mistake? Maybe but worth every penny. Hilarious!

Funniest film ever
I love his movement and body position at 1:48 - 1:50
Corky is an English Lord in real life.
Not that there's anything wrong with that.
I love that her dress is about 6x too big 😂
Corky is such an alpha!
considering how hard you're already laughing, the move at the end is just too much...
Is she saying "Armani i didn't mean to doubt you"? .....lol, Corky must have picked the name himself
Lol
ivanomkd No. “Oh Monty” in Libby’s flat accent.
@@shamelesshussy No, the character's name is Armani. Another joke.
hahahha handing his hat to a stagehand, i just noticed that
oh god that look on the face of Corky's admirer at 0:59 is classic
Guffman was the Jefferson's neighbor.
Magic!
