Very nicely done. It looks as if you do a lot of these. I like your techniques of leaving the coolant reservoir in place, water pump, EGR cooler, and exhaust manifold still attached. Gasket Masters should take notes.

I have to say- I love the background music! If anyone knows who the artist is or can provide a link, please do so. Thanks!

Is there a little metal dowel like maybe half a centimeter or so and a few mm in diameter in the top cover or maybe sits in that VVTi passage or somewhere else that'd be in the top cover?
When I practiced removing a 2011 with ~150K miles head at the yard; I noticed, and didn't see where came from, that little metal dowel fall out of somewhere when I flipped the top cover upside down to set aside.
I wound up purchasing all the yard pull timing and head assembly parts to practice checking per Toyota specs and possibly use as well since my 2013 has way more miles on it. What are your thoughts?
Thinking now I might rebuild if the surface checks out.
Though wondering what that little metal dowel like pin part is?
Any advice is greatly kindly appreciated. Thanks for sharing Drew! Liked and Subscribed already.

There is a dowel that helps aline front cover to engine. It has never fallen out on me before. It is right above the water pump pressed into the block.

@@shoptimewithdrew Little 2-3mm diameter one maybe 5-7mm long? I'm going off memory watching videos now. Looked oil covered and like was inside somewhere in the top cover over the cams like I'm guessing has something to do with oiling possibly.

@@shoptimewithdrew Just double checked size and was 10mm long and 3mm diameter with a slight taper maybe 1.5mm or so in on one side. Was I'm thinking somewhere in the top valve cover like where the oil cap is of the head assembly, cause fell out of somewhere when I flipped and moved.

I don't know exactly where you are talking about if the pin was hollow it could have been the alignment dowel for the cam tower to the cylinder head.

@@shoptimewithdrew For some reason in my mind I'm thinking was for an oil passage or something VVTi as I thought I saw a video noting to be careful with that oil passage on that cam. Definitely was in the valve cover where found and I forget if I placed the cam tower on. Seems I did, so wondering now if came out of there. It's a solid 10mm 3mm diameter, with one side tapered with a slight dimple, dowel or pin from somewhere. Thanks for your time, I do sincerely appreciate that and your experience. If rings a bell what is, please let me know. I'll keep researching and post back what I find out if I do.

@@shoptimewithdrew I'm looking for a good Toyota mechanic in Atlanta. My son has a 2010 Prius that may need a new head gasket soon. Also, I thought you would want to promote yourself to people in your area. A good, trusted mechanic is hard to find.

Thank you. Sorry, you just never know when people ask about personal stuff online. I have family in the Atlanta area, but I'm from Oregon.
