My gawd, the movie made me tear up. A freakin' korean flick man! But I have to say, the issue of civilian casualty revolving around the korean war adds the "feels" factor into it. The ending is surreal tho, has a Spirited Away vibe in it. Then again, the film's score composer also worked on most of Ghibli Studio's masterpieces :)
I really like that semi-fantastical aura that film has. It has a perfect mix of comedy and tragedy and a very bittersweet ending. I think the music and landscape add much to the plot, they symbolise innocence.
This was such a beautiful movie. It has definitely moved me to tears and it's rare that a movie does that to me. One of my favorite movies now!! Love it!
I had a small part in this film, and was quite excited when production wrapped up knowing that this would be more than just your usual Korean film fare. There was a lot of buzz about this film and talk of Cannes and Venice. In post-production, I was informed that my scene would be snipped out and left on the editing room floor as the production team had to cut something like 40 minutes from what should have been the full film. I was gutted, but such is cinema. I couldn't bring myself to watching the film itself because of the negative emotions that I had attached to my personal experience in the making of the film...and then not making it IN the film..., but now I see that Hisaishi Joe did the score. I had no idea until now that he composed the theme song. This makes the exclusion even more painful. To have one's name attached to any work that involves Hisaishi would be a tremendous honor.
