This whole episode will always hold a special place in my heart. It's a great episode but it will be special to me because this was filmed where I live. Literally, the actors' trailers were parked in my back yard for a few weeks while they filmed all the "Indiana" scenes. My cousin has a picture of Martin Sheen holding her as a baby. FYI the Indiana scenes weren't filmed in Indiana. Every scene in "Indiana" is in fact in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. I grew up crossing that covered bridge to get to work (they actually had to get special blessings from the nearby Amish communities to film in the area), and the opening shot you can see a little brick house in the background, that was my uncle's house.
I have a script book for seasons 3 and 4 and with this scene as Toby and Josh start going off and ranting, all it says is "Toby and Josh go to the zoo". Which means that they just go crazy. So all of the shouting and Toby hitting the guardrail with A stick is all improvised
I love how Josh is screaming at the universe saying "I serve my country!" and " Can we have a civilisation?!" but Toby is just waving a big stick thinking 'I need to hit something...' Also, is the volunteer kid the same actor as Jim from The Newsroom? Another member from the West Wing gang joining the Sorkin bandwagon!
This is my favorite show and I'm from Indiana. I could not stop laughing at this scene because that has been my reaction when I have to travel to the part of the state with the change and realize I'm either an hour early or an hour late.
This is easily in the top 5 scenes from the West Wing. It's so hard because there are so many great scenes in the show, but this is pretty much the perfect Toby (and to a lesser extent Josh) scene.
As someone who lived and worked in Southern Indiana, I can confirm this is an issue. I had make sure my phone didn’t dynamically set the time zone because my house and work were on opposite sides of the time zone.
Josh's reaction is me when I lose it with incompetent classmates in school and Toby's reaction is me when I lose it with stupid, idiotic teammates in online video gaming. And yes, THIS is officially the best moment in the West Wing, aside from CJ dancing to I'm Too Sexy and Josh spitting his coffee.
Yeah, it's my favorite episode as well. If I hadn't before this episode.............I fell in love with Donna Moss when she was sitting at the table while telling Josh and Toby about conditions in that state and how they give prizes for the biggest heirloom apple. "They're proud of what they grow". I fell in love with Donna Moss during this episode (if I hadn't actually done it before then).
LMFAO! That's hysterical. Only thing is, if this episode had been taped recently, the kids would have recorded this on their cell phone cameras and it would have been up on RUclips in an hour.
Melinda Gibs I thought the same at first when I saw a few eps on TV but got into it mainly because of the characters. It's actually a good show. I know nothing about politics and in fact I find politics boring as hell, but the show, as a whole (the relationships and story lines) is good. A LOT of funny moments, great actors. Learned some things too.
yea and the funny thing is, on the Newsroom panel at PaleyFest about a week ago, Aaron Sorkin admitted even HE didn't remember him. Telling the story of when Gallagher came in for his audition, he looked on his resume and saw The West Wing, and Sorkin said "What the hell did he do on TWW??" hahaa.. He needed someone else to remind him about this episode. (I'm happy to say I figured it out way back at the start of Newsroom haha)
I still laugh at loud while watching this. Toby with the stick is the best. Gotta love Donna in this scene too "okay, my guys are going to need a minute". lol.
Even after Indiana fully observed Daylight Savings Time, it's still confusing. I didn't know that Michigan city is in the central time zone until a little bit more recently. The stains still remain. It's even more amazing that there are still counties like Houghton and Keewanaw in western upper michigan that are in the eastern time zone when it's clearly in the central time zone area. Being that it's way more up north than Indiana, people are ending up waking up in the dark during the school years in that area too. I think it would make sense to have the whole upper peninsula of Michigan and the state of Indiana to be on the central time zone because living near a time zone boundary can have dangerous repercussions.
I've watched this scene so many time, it's STILL funny! We changed timezones? WE CHANGED TIMEZONES?!?! PRICELESS!!!! :) :) :) Thanks for the laughs, West Wing!
HOLY MOTHER FUCKING SHIT................THAT'S FUCKING JIM!!!!!! THAT'S JIM HARPER. SENIOR PRODUCER AT ACM. Holy CRAP. I never knew he was in the West Wing!!!!!
This was from "20 Hours in America". This is actually my favorite episode ever. The whole bar scene where Donna scolds them both because "nobody brought up Bartlet vs. Ritchie but you". And then when Toby starts talking to Matt at the bar because Matts' helping his daughter look for a college that he can't pay for. I love how Josh waves his hand just before Toby says to Matt "I work at the White House". "In the shadow of 2 gunmen" is my second favorite of all time.
What Ive always found amazing about this scene is the line "We know who you are, we're not rednecks." I grew up in a very small town in Utah. I was politically active, and, with a gun to my head, if you would have asked me who the DCOF was and who his assistant was, I would have said just killed me. No 16 year old knows who these people are.
this video is so true about Indiana and the issue of Daylight Savings time. It used to be worse but the state is better than it used to be when it comes to time......hilarious scene
"300 IQ points between them...without Donna, they'd have to buy a house."
- President Bartlet
Brilliant dialogue. Still makes me laugh even after all these years.
What episode
@@lukethompson2714if memory serves its 24 hours in America. Season 3, when they’re running for re-election I believe.
@@NoPowerintheVerse the quote
See this assumes Josh and Toby would be able to handle buying the house
love how Josh's voice always goes up an octave when he's emotional
Josh's way of being done is walking away and Toby's, which is the best, is grabbing a huge stick and hitting something. God I love this show.
Sometimes, it's best to beat the bejabbers out of an inanimate object. That's why baseball bats, branches, and heavy bags are so convenient. Yep, I side with Toby on this one.

Is this the episode where Josh bets Toby to say he works at the White House every time he introduces himself?

my personal favorite is toby's "What a schmuck-ass system!"

Holy shit. Great spot
Adam Petruchio Thats kinda ironic he plays a young guy here then in is Jim in newsroom both sorkin shows like some alt history thing.
Adam Petruchio Holy crap spotted like a boss! Crazy how young he is in this!
Sorkin said he didn't know this when he cast him in The Newsroom. Cracking coincidence.
LOL Oh that Josh, having one of his freak out moments. Gotta love Brad Whitford. Good thing they had Donna as a buffer.
don't worry its a common mistake
NOT FOR THE US GOVERNMENT
I'm from Indiana and I can confirm that there really are people like that here.
There’s nothing wrong with these people. Josh and Toby often act like arrogant know it alls. It was nice to see their comeuppance moments.
