My beloved E55 AMG finally broke down so like every good car guy I took the opportunity to make it go faster, "while I was in there." In this video, we install a new water pump, a fixed supercharger pulley and multiple billet pullies in the front of the engine. This results in a glorious new supercharger whine and more boost! Seriously this thing sounds insane!

Said no car guy ever.
Mercedes actually give you room to work on the pulleys without removing the front clip of the car........Audi would never!!!
You don't have to, i did my timing belt without removing the front clip
@@joewontwice what audi? Most VWs you have to remove the front clip or even completely remove the engine.

Absolutely awesome video. Your video solved a big mystery for me. I bought a Chrysler Crossfire that had been converted to an SRT-6 supercharged engine. It has a heck of a rattle at idle but I couldn't figure where the rattle was coming from and suspected there might be something wrong with the supercharger. I ran a stethoscope all over the engine and couldn't hear anything, I changed the pulleys, water pump, and alternator and added a pulley saver kit from Needswings. The rattle is still there and then today I watch your video and you explained that is normal with a fixed pulley. My car is a 6-speed manual and when the conversion was done they must have programmed the SC pulley to be on all the time. Now it all makes sense and I know there is nothing wrong. You made my day!
_Congrats Alex on hitting the 200K subscribers! In three short years, you've amassed more than 25 million views. I'd have to say your formula is: excellent mechanical knowledge, great tutorials, great voice over work, and just all around interesting content. _*_Local Chicago guy makes good._*
Thanks Gene. Appreciate the kind words and your continued support
Congrats almost at 200 k been here since the beginning
Problem is the supercharger is a lysholm style screw compressor which actually internally compresses the air. A conventional "roots" style supercharger has no internal compression. The clutch is there to prevent the unwanted compression during idle and cruising. While typically more efficient under boost (lower outlet temp per amount of boost) the lysholm will cause more heat to be created than a "roots" when idling and cruising. The new generation TVS superchargers from Eaton are extremely efficient while not internally compressing. They are also lavaliere in much larger sizes than the factory 1.6Lsxrew compressor. I wonder if anyone has tried to upgrade to a larger TVS?
"While I'm in there" is universal for every profession, Jonny sins says it in every video no matter if he's a mechanic, Dr, or astronaut
Alex you are a legend. I am searching for an S55 right now. Hopefully COVID hasn't inflated prices on all of them long-term. Thanks for all of your insane vids
There are several Mercedes with a cluched pulley, mostly M62 blowers & Toyota used them on the MR2
About the cleanest antifreeze iv ever seen
I'm here just to look at the blacked out headlights. They look fantastic! Why don't they come like that as standard?
Legend on the RUclips platform
for reals
I suspect the rattling is the backlash in the supercharger gears. Tiny fluctuations in idle speed means the engine is constantly speeding up and slowing down over small periods of time. At idle there is little to no compression load on the supercharger to take up the backlash so it will rattle.
As a Lexus ISF owner I’m jealous. You get to mod so much because stuffs always breaking on the merc! I think Lexus don’t like you modding hence the bombproof reliability.
Belt slip
Kit costs like $500 I wouldn’t call that inexpensive lol
Just noticed you went down Elston passed my apartment and I paused and saw the blue prius I had wow that was b4 the riots I live in the burbs now
shouldn't have to worry about high IAT's. A good tune will pull timing and some times add fuel as temps increase.
Love FCP Euro, Been buying Mercedes, Volvo and SAAB parts from them for years and getting them shipped all the way to Australia.
That noise at idle sounds like the coupler
Thanks to your videos im on the market for an e55😂 please let me know what to look for while at it
Quite a lot of smoke when you took of.
Tyre smoke lol
I was wondering why he was blinking so much but I remembered oh coolant went in his eyes😂
I do love blower whine :)
The real pro tip here is maybe drain the coolant from the block assuming there are block drains. 👌
The whine from a supercharger is like nails on a chalkboard. I got rid of my supercharger. I could not stand the noise.
Turbo WHOOSH and pop off FTW!!!!
Alex, does a system software exist for energizing the supercharger clutch at the flick of the switch when the software has it disengaged? "Mustang killer mode" if you will.
This is an awesome question, that would be tight as fuck. Wouldn't that also be a better mod than having the one you installed in this video?
im in the same boat...Love my s55 but when I drove Toyota's I didn't even have AAA
Damn! 7 cars!!
I still remember C55 very well, it was very beautiful and in great condition when you sold it. Maybe its time to sell some more? I bet your wife says so from time to time ;)
The E55 videos are the best
Hi, Alex! I'm a big fan of yours, wish you all best with the channel and cars with it. I'm considering buying an E55 AMG from the first model year around 2003. I wonder if the SBC is kind of a pain, and also the air suspension bothers me a little. Can I have advice from you? I've done tons of work on my CLK 320 W209, so maintenance of these cars makes me happy, but have a few concerns with the E55. Thanks in advance :)...
Great video and channel. So why does it rattle???
What’s your take on ICars of Chitown?? They have a few cars I am interested in.pls let me know. I’m a Springfield IL guy. Thanks.
Watching you work makes me miss been a Benz tech😿
OMG, who torque water pump bolts?
Fast question! is any high mileage e55 a bad purchase? or doesn't it matter cuz its kinda bulletproof? even if its been abused alot? curerntly looking at some, and all are 136k miles and over
7:00 Bro is cooked forsure
Why make that pulley solid if you can program it to do anything you want or use switch to turn compressor on as needed?
You can't program it to do that
Wonder why Mercedes didn't think of draining coolant straight down instead of side plug.
Nice vid as usual. Unfortunately, Roots type Superchargers are tremendously inefficient at higher boost levels. So you are not likely to get any more power by doing this mod. It will add pressure, but it heats the air so much more that the air density does not increase very much. So the ecu will pull fuel out. The parasitic drag from the supercharger also means less power available for the wheels. A lot of work for not much performance improvement. A before and after dyno with IAT and intake pressures would illustrate the extent to which you are chasing your tail here.
That car has a twin screw supercharger
@@FlyingMagicPotatoes Yeah the Lysholms are a bit more efficient. But still crappy compared to a turbo.
Love your vids!
Has the fixed pulley made you feel different about the trans shift firmness? Better, worse, same?
That’s funny, on my w202 c230 kompressor it did the same rattle noise at idle. I think as the magnetic clutch went out it pretty much stayed locked.
Are the m113k pulleys the same as m113!? I would love to get those on the C55!
Antifreeze splashed on your face? Ha! You should've seen me covered in engine oil.
Great vid as always. At what temp iat does the supercharger go into safety mode, can't seem to find the info.
Pro work!
THERE IS AN OLD PULLEY IN THERE , I CANT HELP IT
I SAW ON EBAY THEY HAD A SUPERCHARGER CLUTCH DELETE KIT, WILL THAT BE BETTER THAN LEAVING PULLEY CLUTCH ON AND JUST REPLACE THE PULLEY?
Can’t you run a magnetic clutch pulley and just tune the kick in at a lower rpm?
Do you have to retune your car if you change your pully from a 83mm to a 72mm?
Did you use the same belt for your supercharger pulley when you had the clutched setup?
Yes
Hey Alex! Did you have to install a resistor on the supercharger magnet/clutch connector?
Is this the same engine that is in my 2005 sl55?
That rattle sound is similar to that of the first gen CTS V/ZL1 SUPERCHARGERS which lead to the recall. Over time it destroyed them... does anyone know of a long term review of the internals of the MB blower?
Shhhhhh if it breaks he can get the bigger blower
Save the old belt as spare! You have too change it!!!!!!!!!!//C
I hope you still have your meth setup, the 70-72 FSP is awesome as long as you can keep it cool on the top end

I think you should look up the definition for the word "putz". It doesn't mean what I think you think it means.
hello, i am from texas and i have a w203 c32 amg. basically the 6 cylinder version of the e55. im looking to replace some pulleys and add some boost but am also wondering if it is as easy as the e55 and what are the differences? also, should i go with vrpspeed, raceiq, vtech, or any other mercedes tuning/performance companies. thanks!
I have a 07 e550 4 matic 50 k Mile s I want to add a supercharger can I add the 55 amg supercharger to it?
I have an e55 and an E500, the water pump pulley on my 500 is doing the same exact thing as yours(wobbling around). Do I have to replace the water pump itself or just the pulley..??
Ha

I think that's tyre smoke, not exhaust!

Hi guys I’m looking for a 06 e55 thanks
I'd love to see you make a video called "Why Scotty Kilmer is wrong about Mercedes repair costs." 😅
*THIS* :)
Lmao golden 👌🤣
Seriously I have owned Mercedes for 20 years. Yes some parts cost more but usually because I don't like putting cheap parts in my car. I know Japanese cars last long not just Toyota all Japanese cars are good. But I like to call Mercedes the Toyota of the German brands. I love Mercedes I think I will always have one or two. On another note I like that you showed the coolant leaking all over you it shows that even the pros mess up. Keep up the great content I love this channel I'm glad it's growing for you
@@noahlugobaseballandboxing7015 I completely understand agree with you I myself own 2 W202's and love them, the cost of some of the expensive parts is totally worth the money when you consider the reliability and comfort of a Mercedes. I also like quick performance vehicles but that's what my 90's short bed Chevy Silverado is for lol 😁
Biiiig facts. Hate that dude.
Love the blower whine but the rattle would kick my OCD into overdrive.

Just bought myself a e55, your videos have been a big reason why. Love it so far, can't wait to start modifying it!
Bloodhawk759 same whit me a year ago he made me change from BMW to MB lol i love my E55 , is such a gentle beast
I want one, can easily afford one. The maintenance scares me though
jmhellison i got mine 18 months ago, 146k miles now and this is a quick cost review:
SC pulley: 700 dollars (done at dealership thats why so high otherwise it would be like 50)
Spark plugs and wires: 350
Both front air struts: 1200, did the job by my self
SBC break failed: free of charge replacement by MB, its under extended 25 year warranty by MB usa
My A/C is working weird, not very cold air, and air flow speed oscillates randomly or stops completely for no reason
Estimated cost: 140 to 500 without labor
Regular oil and filter changes
So about 166.6 dollars a month i dont think is that high considering that most of the cost is for the airmatic that lasted 146k on originals, thats a lot
Me too, I got mine a week ago. I like the simplicity of working on it.
Have fun with repairs lmao
“I’ll do it NEXT time I’m in here” another classic car guy phrase 👍🏻
Lol " I have 7 cars and everyone of them has a issue " this sounds just like me
At 1:30 i died 😂 that’s pretty much me all day working on cars. Usually no ones looking.
Holy crap his face was priceless!
I have to hand it to Alex. Being on video he just chalked it up to patience and zipped it when he may very well have felt like cursing a blue streak.
His face made my day lol
Dude, great content. You’ve inspired me to detail the f out of my 03 m sport 540i, re-clear my headlights (mucho wet sanding), yellow my fog lights and ceramic coat my testicles. Thank you
Nice car. Got one myself. Of all my cars this one is my favorite
Wait, you ceramic coated your what?!
I love the way the E55 just breaks the stereotype of an old man's car. This car will smoke most and cruise like none can, perfect!
Nah man that water pump can go for another 10k miles.
The solution to every car problem: money and boost. 👌
P.S: I love my ratchets/drivers cordless or pneumatic . . . saves so much time at work and home projects.👌🏻💖
Good old German way: Everything attached/connected to EVERYTHING and need to remove EVERYTHING to get to anything. 😞👎🏻💩
DAT WHINE THO.👌🏻💖💯
Show me your ways master jedi !
Plus, more money
I am curious if with the clutch pulley you get better gas mileage?
It seems like the e55 doesn't actually use the supercharger untill you need it with the clutched pulley?
Hit the tamper proof pin with a punch and break it, then use regular star
Your e55 build is going fantastic. I think your videos are entertaining and clear, and give people confidence to own and work on their own performance cars! Please keep going with the e55! We've got a C63 and E55, and watching your videos is a must when you own an AMG!
Time for 550 cc injectors and looped rail... Otherwise, 8 cylinder fuel starvation problem is coming. Anyway, another great video Alex! 😄
It's done but with 630cc injectors
Wow nice to see BG users comment (y)
Lopped rail does absolutely nothing. Nada. Zylinder 8 starvation is on there myth. Educate yourself before you spread false information.
@@Bastard_Operator_From_Hell this is a douche free zone. Educate yourself before being a douche.
When my 8th cylinder misfired, all I needed was a software update from mercedes and then I put my tune back on and the misfire was gone!
1988-1989 Supercharged Mr2 has an electronic magnetic engagement for its supercharger as well.
I've been dying for more E55 vids after I picked up my '04! Absolute monsters stock. What's your opinion on the VRP 520 or 620 kits? Are they a good value?
Hell no they're not. VRP outsources Chinese low quality parts
@@newb529 some parts they sell are fine, but their kits i would not do.
Dude 7 cars and they are all out of service? I thought this was about how easy these cars are to own if you know what you're doing.
Pro of fixed pulley is no more changing supercharger pulley bearings.
Con is bad fuel economy.
M113k's came out of factory with bad fuel economy 😂
It gets 13mpg city stock lol
Why not just delete the whole assembly with the clutch delete pulley?
Legit, I don't need your thermostat but I have a question. I just did a thermostat & coolant change on my M112 engine. There's a low-temp stat available that fits it although it's listed for your E55 www.mishimoto.com/mercedes-e55-amg-racing-thermostat-2003-2006.html My housing has a shorter neck than yours but the stat press-fits in exactly the same way. I tried removing the OE stat from the aluminum housing but it's so tightly in there I was afraid I'd damage it. Do you have any tips or should I just take it to a machine shop?
Is it true that it is better to shift the pulley on the crank for more boost than the pully on the compressor ?, what is your opinion, i have acls55amg and bought it with a 83mm pully on the compressor, have upgrade watercooler with upgrade pump and long neck downpipes, at the dyno it showed 0,7 bar of pressure and 518 ps and 810 nm. just bought a belt wrap kit as the belt sometimes can slip.
My 2010 Audi S4 whines like that. Probably because it has a roots supercharger with a fixed pulley.
"i have 7 cars right now and every one of them has a problem" man if that isn't my life. Except, you have a much better collection than i do lol.
great just what I wanted a 2 minute infomercial, NOT. I pay for ad blocking so I can see videos without ads. Not with you piss
5.5 liter engine with 14 pounds behaves like a 10.5 Liter monstrousity. Good thing there is a converter to spare you changing an exploded diff every month
Not gonna lie I'm impatient waiting on your new videos 😂😂😂🙏
Are you sure that rattle is normal and not a worn bearing in the supercharger? I'm curious because mine has the same rattle and it's pretty annoying
LOL the supercharger whine sounds like a grinder/Dremel.
I don't feel so bad any more when a pro mechanic and most of his cars have problems.
removing that fixed pulley is gonna be fun
Heat it up again, if it ever needed taking off.
My M112 engine has that exact same pulley.
2007-09 e63 no supercharger, no turbo you can get 600hp
Haven’t watched the video yet, but gotta say the title is amazing, “It broke so I added more power” that’s the right mindset.
The want for an e55 is so bad now.... I could do all those mods in my sleep, i think im going to start selling off stuff 🤔🤔
Edward Tisinger go for it just shop around for well cared for ones with records and paperwork does wonders.
The front bearing on the Sc is on it's way out, I'd advise you to change it or you gonna swap in a new SC.
Might as well put one in since he's in it lol
