You cannot help falling in love with your layout. Much time and work went into this and I note how well you display all your scenery. Its neat and clean and the plasticville village is evident. I can compare this to a musician who knows how to compose a musical solo. It looks simple and easy but down deep inside you know how technically great the performance is. You have achieved this thru your excellent talent. Texas Special looks and runs like the gem it is. Congratulation to you for all your endeavors. Greatly appreciated.
Hi Big Al / Excellent train room & layout. Like how you use classic Lionel Tubular Track. A lot of model train action. Cool. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
Love how you ran the semi modern C&O passenger along side older models. My Texas Special Alco's always make an odd noise when I run them. I might have to get some grease in the motor or gears.
Those O27 alcos have a noisy gear train and the motor goes out of alignment over time. A drop of grease and a gentle tap of the hammer will get them running like new.
thats a really cool layout i live for old school my layout is 1940s and 1950s trains only plasicville like yours just old stuff do not like the new trains your layout thats fun like it
Thanks for the feedback. The steamers are a Lionel postwar 681 turban and 2036. Both were liquid smoke converted and smoke like crazy. The diesels are Texas Special 027 Alcos.
This is really e great inspiration for me in starting my own layout. Bummer that you had to move to a condo. I hope you still get to run some of your trains.
the dog does not like the noise haha vintage lionel are the best heavy and loud people love them old and young it puts a smile on there face i like that run mine all the time for them
This is beautiful and a model railroad I can really relate to. Are the steamers 726 Berkshires? I was trying to get a number off the cab, but they go by too fast! Are the Sante Fe diesels 2333s? I used to have one of those talking stations you've got there.
There is a 736 Berkshire. The diesels are modern era reissues of the postwar classics Circa 1996. My Noma station was retrofitted with a digital sound kit I bought off ebay about 10 years ago. It actually works and the seller can outfit it with any of the 4 original Noma soundtracks. Not sure if they are still available.
Love your layout! I used to have an HO setup when I was a kid. I really miss running my trains. I think it's time to get back into the hobby this year. I'm sold on the idea of going with O Gauge. Any recommendations for jumping in? Which radius track did you use?
MidnightMoon Welcome to the hobby. My first recommendation is to stay away from O27 track. You should use the largest curve radius you can. In my case a loop of 54 and another loop of 42 and 31 as the tightest curve loop on my layout.Track can be very expensive whatever you do stay away from FastTrack as it's too noisy and way too expensive.
Question Allan, how are you running your trolly? Accessory power or conventional along with your trains? I was looking to add one to my layout. Hope I do not have to buy another transformer just for a trolly.
Marc Jammer Thanks Mark. The trolley line is powered off of one of the spare B or C controls of the ZW. The there is just too much variable with trolleys to run them off a fixed power source.
Al, I love the White Sox Subway--I am a big Sox fan. You have a lot of great stuff on the layout. I love the mini-train at the carnival. Did you scratch build it? I really like the track plan, different levels, lots of switches etc. Awesome.
JJosephS1 Hi, scratch-building is minimal but the subway platform is hand done and populated by Lego people. The miniature train at the amusement area is N gauge. The O gauge people ride in modified gondola cars.
Tracy Loop hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to learn about model railroad layout try Panlarko Amazing Railroad Planner (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
Yes, l solder 18 gauge feed wires directly to the track. The power bus lines are 14 gauge stranded THN house wiring. I tap into them at about 4-5' intervals with 18-14 tap splices. Every block is protected with a 7A circuit breaker.
You have some impressive locos and cars.
This is the kinda guy I ought to hang out with
Nice layout. You gave me a few ideas.
Wow! Like the old school o scale layout.
love the layout. love the subway and the el trolley line:) ooohhh the room. ohm myyyyy!.

AWESOME!!!!! Thank you for sharing and keep up the good work.
Very cool layout, Allen. I like the Plasticville buildings, also.
J. J. Foster I LOVE PLASTICVILLE ALSO.
Hi Big Al. I love the layout and all the plasticville. You have really great trains. Nice run session.
Looks like fun , getting ready to build a traditional 50's style layout myself!
Whew slow then trains down LOL. Nice layout.
Good stuf, Allan.

The subway is cool! I was thinking of doing something like that....
My Nephew donated his Legos to help with the station
nice

Thank you for your comments. The carnival train is actually N gauge. I added styraphome seating to gondolas and sat O gauge riders.
Hey, there. who is your rail road buddy barking in the back ground?

Trains are running well over scale speed which, in my opinion, detracts from the layout.
Robert Obrien Nothing scale about my layout. Just running toy trains.
Haha looks fun. Lionels are so noisy.
Yes they are. There are ways to mitigate the sound but I built this part before I had that experience.
WHY DO YOU RUN THEM SO FAST?????
The bigger longer mainline trains are running slow, relatively speaking. This is a toy train layout after all.
Is power to the track hard wired

It's 2017? ??
Sarah Jardine alas, this is the last time. We are downsizing and have begun dismantling the layout.
doggo no like trains
