Divinefavour Adebayo Actually it is more Bungie/Activision that is repeatedly saying that they hear people and will do better and then sneak in some sneaky things in Destiny 2.
ea isn’t as bad as activision tbh, you literally have to pay to be able to have a gamble of unlocking an item that you can’t unlock otherwise, ea just makes it so that the process is faster for you, however you can get it done without spending money

For those who don't know, the term 'whale' used at 6:25 is a term describing players who spend large amounts of money on in game content, usually making them extremely powerful. Just like how beer manufacturers target alcoholics because they provide most of their sales, games with free to play models target whales because they spend the most money.
I heard that term a lot back when I used to play SD Gundam Capsule Fighter (SDGO.) There were always a handful of players that dumped ridiculous amounts of money into the game with every update. I can only imagine what those people felt when the servers shut down. Its one of the biggest reasons why I'm hesitant to put money into online games. At least I still physically own my old Pokemon cards!
uhh... your comparison is not very good. Alcoholism is not about how much you drink, it's about the *emotional* compulsion to drink. An alcoholic does not necessarily drink more than a non-alcoholic. What they do is they use the alcohol for emotional regulation. If available however, an alcoholic typically uses hard liquor since it gives more bang for the buck. Usually, beer manufacturers don't target alcoholics: they target party planners. Why? because these people are going to buy large quantities of alcohol to distribute to their friends. In particular, they are targeting people who plan parties frequently: once a month, or even every weekend. If you are the person who does that, then you are going to buy vastly more alcohol than any single individual could ever consume. If anything this practice is even more damaging than taking advantage of an individual's addiction would be, because what this does is equate alcohol with fun in the minds of young children. This is one of the reasons why there has been a huge uptick in underage drinking, in some places. Kids grow up thinking that the way that adults have fun is by drinking, and so when they are 15 or 16 and want to be "grown-up" they feel like they need to drink. It is primarily advertisers who have given them the false impression that what adults enjoy about parties is drinking, although Hollywood certainly hasn't helped matters.
Sophie Jones well, it's just a simple metaphor. I think most understood the premise. That companies care more about the few people who buy a lot and buy often, instead of the countless people who spend very little.
Bless you for giving a shoutout to Jim Sterling. I have watched the guy for years, and I'm grateful that somebody finally saw the incredible job and research he puts into his work. With all his silly aesthetic and behaviour, many dismiss him, but he's amazing when it comes to analysing gaming industry bullshit. So thank you for acknowledging the work of smaller RUclipsrs. I hope this increases the number of people that watch Jim. (and, of course, great episode you've done, Matpat!)
Day 1: I've decided to never spend a dime on any lootbox ever. Day 50: The tatalizing rewards are making it increasingly more difficult, but I will not succum to the bait. Day 287: I don't know how much longer I can last, I want that skin so badly... Day: 288: I almost broke, but recent episodes from game theory have opened my eyes and reminded me why I have chosen this path. Day 300: Lootboxes are not De Way
A feel that one item that you forgot to mention or failed to mention is the fact that when you purchase pokemon cards, baseball cards and the like, you aren't having to purchase a larger overall system first. When we are purchasing loot boxes from a game that we should already have 100% access to, loot boxes are just a way of manipulating chances for the consumer to then finally complete that 100%. That is the largest controversial factor with this method. At least in my opinion .
vert true. i am playing a tomb raider game right now and the only way to be 100% completionist is if you by loot crates. because they actually have that as trophy rewards if you buy a certain amount
id rather have nothing then something i dont ever use or dont want, mostly overwatch has an overwhelming wave of crap in their boxes, sprays and logos were free in other games, such as TF2 the carbon copy of this game. Now its being used to justify you getting "something" so its not "gambling"
MatPat you need to do a theory on Gang Beasts, there is definitely a seriously dark tone hidden under all the funny gameplay and plushy characters. I think it all centers around a canned meat brand that may be related to cannibalism, or maybe it's referring to a corrupt meat company in real life somehow. Idk but I would love if you could look into it.
No joke, this happened to me in Rocket League: I recieved a velocity crate. 2 days later I recieve another velocity crate. I decide to buy 2 keys for each velocity crate and open them. 1 day later I recieve a velocity crate and I instantly buy a key for it. The next day I get 3 velocity crates in 1 day.
This is another trick they use. You feel like you are wasting your opportunity to get something if you unlock the boxes you already have, again that Sunk Cost. The thing is, until you unlock the box, you don't actually have anything. This is not a physical box sitting on your house that you could smash with a hammer if you wanted. It's just a number they show you to tempt you into paying.
The same happened to me. But I sold my earnings from them for other stuff I wanted. Velocities crates were new at the time and all the stuff was on high demand, meaning I could sell the stuff I got for crazy prices. Imperator for 5K. For example.
You Forgot the fact that lootboxes reward are linked to your account in a game Own by a company. The game is actually running on a server who CAN be shut down at any time. Technicaly you did not own anything whereas my random skittles are all mine. Thanks for the vidéo mat I really love your work :)
I am curious if the "You can trade the items with other people giving them an value that is market based - therefor you always get something someone else might want." argument was the thing that toppled card-packs over to not be considered gambling. With virtual lootboxes locked inside your profile with you having no way of trading or such you can actually argue that you do not get any items at all - since they might hold no value at all to you. That is the argument I can find that would make lootboxes able to become regulated without stopping cardpacks etc, or your skittle packs.
You can always sell your game account. Plus it doesn't matter if you value what you got. You got something and that's all that matters. If you don't like spending money and not getting what you wanted then stop spending money. The companies are not forcing you to do it, you do it out of greed, so why should the companies pay for your sins?
Krillol Imagine if the game itself as the person you’re trading with. The game almost always allows you to get some sort of currency for something you actually care about. If you have a bunch of trash cards in Hearthstone, you “trade” them to the system and the system always has that card you would rather have. It’s basically a balance for people that don’t have friends that play the game and don’t really feel like friending strangers.
Bernardo Calado I don't think that's a valid argument. I'm don't think that anyone would be willing to buy or sell an Xbox or PlayStation account for skins.
remember the days when you didnt have microtransactions? when if something was locked, you would play the game to unlock, instead OF PAYING FOR IT GODDAMIT???!!1
Most of those types of games back in the day were singleplayer, These are multiplay games that have to pay employs to make the new content and have to pay for the servers to be held up and supported and anything else they might need.
Same. Games were polished and sold as a complete game, with tons of unlockables and secrets given to you from playing and being good. Now it's like "Hot damn, I gotta spend $30 for that new Destiny thing" and 10 GB of weekly patches.. ._.
You left out one key thing: Baseball cards/MtG cards/Pokemon cards have individual value. I may not want this pikachu for the 500th time, but I can sell that card to someone that does. I cannot sell that duplicate Widow skin to someone else. If the loot box contains nothing you want, you cannot redeem any value from it, you cannot sell an items gained for any monetary value to anyone else. What I want is to pay for a product and get a product, not a marketplace that tries to get me to spend more money.
here is a thought. What happens when you have unlocked 100% of the over-watch content. can you buy a loot box still? how could one argue that you gain value from such a lootbox then? Or a more likely situation, say you are getting close and opt to splurge on the big bundle of loot boxes. pick up say 50 of them. by box 31 you unlock the last remaining item. you now have 19 lot boxes that have a 100% guarantee of containing 0 value.
You get coins. Even if you don't need them you still get something. Plus you can get free lootboxes for each level. Sooo you can get every skin without paying. Paying is just to speed things up.
This. I've got to admit, coming from a game with tradeable loot boxes and items (TF2) to a game where they can't be traded (Overwatch) really makes it feel like you're just being used for your money. The fact that Blizzard effectively control the value of a duplicate stinks. They give you 15 credits for a duplicated Rare level item when purchasing that item costs 75. At legendary level it's 200 to 1000. This means that (again unlike trading cards) you can't even do an effective price-for-price swap. If you have a duplicate but wanted a different duplicate, you'd have to swap 5 for the 1.
Tell you what matpat, we can call loot boxes not gambling IF they let you trade said obtained items to other players with no restrictions, just like trading cards
Because greedy companies want their moniizzz... I wish people instantly stopped playing every single game with micro-transactions until they implement trading...
What do mean by _innocent?_ It's a game where you run around tearing creatures out of their natural habitats and stuff them into cramped pens to raise a profit.
Thats another trick too. Having an ingame credit is what makes the people susceptible to such things spend the most money. I have heard stories of people spending 1k dolars to get 1000k ingame dollars. They never even realized how fooled they where. I pretty much do the same thing though. I very rarely buy something inside a game. i bought the dota The international compendium two years, but thats it. oh wait i also bought all the downloadeble songs to guitar hero 3. whoops.
pappaOfswe I see exactly where your coming from, but you missed my point. Allow me to rephrase. I don't "buy" loot boxes. I either earn them in game if possible, or buy them with currency that I earn in game. I RARELY spend actual money on games, although this might be do to the fact that I rarely ever spend much time on one game, and get bored of games easily. But my advice is if you do want to spend money on games. Go out and buy a loadable visa. And set a amount that you are willing to spend on a game. Then ONLY use that card. Do. Not. Use. Anything. Else
Yeah. I dont really have a "problem" with spending money on games. The only game i have ever really spent money on is guitar hero. But i have always had an interest in psycolegy so i react hard if i noticed that i'm being pulled by outerforces to do something. But if you are focused on really doing everything in a game even i can spend 100 dolars on something(guitar hero) to be able to say i have done it all and to maby someday reach the dream where i can say i'm the best. I think it's those dreams that manipulate the most. "Live in the moment and work for your goal" is atleast what made me spend so much money on GH3. The manipulating thing is that that sentence was in my head and i though i needed to learn all songs to be the "best". so the money i could spend in game was a way for me to reaching my goal. ofcouse i never needed all thsoe songs to be the best. But all i saw was more practise i never could have without buying the songs. I manipulated myself. It's all so very sudtle.
All of this would work on me........ IF I didn't have the strongest "no don't do this it's bad" will that anyone has ever seen. I see a thing in a game where it says that you get more money than you put in every single time 100% guaranteed, I tried it once, it worked, yet I just shrugged it off and all memory of it was gone. Same with loot crates. Also, I just feel that buying stuff in games is like cheating, so that thought combined with my insane "NO" willpower makes it almost impossible for any of this to work on me. 🤷🏼♀️
My dad bought one once, a real world version of the loot crate, we in all got three. That's it... but.... then thinkcrate came out. Abd we got alot of those for my bro and i. Yah so it's kinda a problem. But in general, I'm pretty good about not buying in app stuff... except for free minecraft stuff, no will whatsoever
Well they are much the same type of creature. Whales are actually just large dolphins for the most part. Did you know the Orca or Killer Whale is actually classes as a dolphin and not a whale?
ok, I've hated the slippery slope argument for a while, you know why? it works both ways, what it says is that "as long as you aren't getting nothing then it's not gambling, so it shouldn't be regulated", so what, does that mean I can set up a poker table for children and as long as I'm giving the loser a piece of candy then I'm not running a gambling scheme?
It’s actually because of the “gachagacha” sound that is typical of coin-op random-capsule vending machines in Japan. You might have seen “gachapon” as well because of the “pon” sound that happens when a capsule drops out of the machine.
You brought up the exact example I was thinking of when this controversy hit. I used to collect baseball and hockey cards. I stopped in the late 80's and early 90's because of this. Other examples of this system are your grocery store card which allows them to design the store layout and also to change price points to maximize profits, ITunes Store where songs become album only and movies get pulled from being rented, and the airlines. Basically any place that can collect data is doing it to find the perfect price point.
I'm not sure I like the new MatPat that much, but I know I like him more than the weird one who was unhealthily obsessed with FNaF and thought Sans was Ness.

Yeah. myself I keep calling bullshit on gambling, But one day someone made me put in a coin.. I wanted to win so bad I spent away like a madman. Then I realized I just went against all my values.. Completely manipulated :/
When I pay for a 60 dollar game, I expect a 60 dollar game. Not, Oh hey, if you buy this box, you'll have a slight chance of getting everything in the game. I'm not really against DLC unless there's enough to pretty much double the money I spend on the base game. Besides, DLC actually gives you what you pay for.
The thing is loot boxes usually don’t give parts of the game out, sure they usually give out cosmetic items and rarely some gameplay changing items but those items can usually be obtained in some other way. DLC is almost always bought and can change the core game but loot boxes don’t change the core game too much and can be obtained in multiple ways.
Helarki yeah but loot boxes are optional they often don't change your gameplay experience whether you buy them or not so go and spend $60 on a game you don't have to buy the DLC it's optional and not actually needed
the main reason lootboxes are such a huge issue right now is battlefront 2. because battlefront 2 lootboxes aren't just cosmetic. they actually affect gameplay. they unlock heroes, weapons, and star cards, and whatever else i can't remember off the top of my head. not all lootboxes are the same, and not all lootbox systems are bad, but battlefront 2 lootboxes are definitely the far end of the bad system, and definitely should be removed if they haven't already. because a player who can drop 2k on lootboxes day one is probably gonna get most of what they need while a player who can't even drop $10 is gonna be at a huge disadvantage because not only can they not use boba fett, but even if they can their fett isn't going to be nearly as effective as the player who dropped 2k on lootboxes and got all the good abilities and such unlocked for him.

Is he related to lindsey sterling?

Day 1: I've decided to never spend a dime on any lootbox ever.
Day 50: The tatalizing rewards are making it increasingly more difficult, but I will not succum to the bait.
Day 287: I don't know how much longer I can last, I want that skin so badly...

Thats a dead meme
REALLY?
A feel that one item that you forgot to mention or failed to mention is the fact that when you purchase pokemon cards, baseball cards and the like, you aren't having to purchase a larger overall system first. When we are purchasing loot boxes from a game that we should already have 100% access to, loot boxes are just a way of manipulating chances for the consumer to then finally complete that 100%. That is the largest controversial factor with this method. At least in my opinion .
yes, they shouldn't be in a full price game.
Agreed.
I genuinely want matpat top respond to this because I also felt this was glazed over
vert true. i am playing a tomb raider game right now and the only way to be 100% completionist is if you by loot crates. because they actually have that as trophy rewards if you buy a certain amount
ryuhouchiha Wow, really? An achievement you can only get by not actually playing the game.

id rather have nothing then something i dont ever use or dont want, mostly overwatch has an overwhelming wave of crap in their boxes, sprays and logos were free in other games, such as TF2 the carbon copy of this game.
Genius
H E C K
I HAVE LITERALLY THOUGHT THIS EXACT COMMENT BEFORE
McBananaBread wow, a theory about that would be awesome!!
No joke, this happened to me in Rocket League:
I recieved a velocity crate.
It's just a number they show you to tempt you into paying.
who buys 2 separate keys. you gotta buy 5 or 10 in bulk
"Turning players into payers"
The same happened to me. But I sold my earnings from them for other stuff I wanted. Velocities crates were new at the time and all the stuff was on high demand, meaning I could sell the stuff I got for crazy prices. Imperator for 5K. For example.
Pigeon King I call bullshit YOU'RE HACKING!
You Forgot the fact that lootboxes reward are linked to your account in a game Own by a company. The game is actually running on a server who CAN be shut down at any time. Technicaly you did not own anything whereas my random skittles are all mine. Thanks for the vidéo mat I really love your work :)
Kromozome servers aren't people.
omg this makes total sense, literally LOL does this with its shops, u can buy skins for characters that u played the most in the past season. Genius

Great apology. I’m crying it was so emotional! We all believe and support you MatPat! Don’t let the haters get to you! #matgang4life
I am curious if the "You can trade the items with other people giving them an value that is market based - therefor you always get something someone else might want." argument was the thing that toppled card-packs over to not be considered gambling. With virtual lootboxes locked inside your profile with you having no way of trading or such you can actually argue that you do not get any items at all - since they might hold no value at all to you.
That is the argument I can find that would make lootboxes able to become regulated without stopping cardpacks etc, or your skittle packs.
but some games DO let you trade the items. look at cisgo.
Krillol to the intro thats csgo
Bernardo Calado I don't think that's a valid argument. I'm don't think that anyone would be willing to buy or sell an Xbox or PlayStation account for skins.
Still theorizing off just the first theory crate today the theory keeps getting deeper
Lel that apology tho.
remember the days when you didnt have microtransactions?
when if something was locked, you would play the game to unlock, instead OF PAYING FOR IT GODDAMIT???!!1
That's the feature of EA
I mean...a lot of those games still have that. Destiny and Overwatch you can get any item, just depends on random chance.
Halo in a nutshell
Most of those types of games back in the day were singleplayer, These are multiplay games that have to pay employs to make the new content and have to pay for the servers to be held up and supported and anything else they might need.
Same. Games were polished and sold as a complete game, with tons of unlockables and secrets given to you from playing and being good. Now it's like "Hot damn, I gotta spend $30 for that new Destiny thing" and 10 GB of weekly patches.. ._.
I only have 4 words. The intro is amazing
I think that he might be legit angry at Logan Paul.
Deni Meni Seni you put 9 words tho
Thanks for telling us how to hypnotize people into spending their money.
You left out one key thing:
Baseball cards/MtG cards/Pokemon cards have individual value.
You can sell skins in CS:GO tho. And they show you that you can win.
here is a thought.
You cant sell duplicates in cod either i think you're just stuck with em
Nagatem God of dueling ninja hi
That...is a brilliant idea. Why can’t we have that option?
Because greedy companies want their moniizzz... I wish people instantly stopped playing every single game with micro-transactions until they implement trading...
Aw man, thats be great. Then thered be a bunch of pros giving their stuff over to us noobs out of pity mwahahaha

Theory crates provide the viewers with a sense of pride and accomplishment
The Ace Of Spades I already bought 50
Fools, 50 crates isn't enough to get 1 of everything! At minimum, you should buy 120 crates to get at least 1 of everything!
The Ace Of Spades buy a special pack of 10 for just $999999999.99! What a deal!

Matthew Hands yes yes yes
?
i love this apology. it was incredibly genuine
Personally I only buy "loot boxes" if they can be bought with credit you can EARN in-game. Rather then pay for
Thats another trick too.

Case...
HA...
Unfunny unintentional joke.
A lute crate. Ha.
I thought it was a Mandola.
Welp, here's another 1600's millenial
Who else has never even seen a Logan or Jake Paul video ever and have only heard about their problems?
CoolCJP1 does the problem videos in the first place count
The only ones ive seen are the sorry video by Logan Paul and Its everyday bro from Jake Paul and thats it
CoolCJP1 so no??? What I'm saying is that the videos that cause the problem, do they count as seeing some of their regular videos
No those videos dont count
CoolCJP1 me

too far? too far? ok, i'm sorry.
And literally before the Game Theory intro starts, I liked the video. That's a beautiful apology!
So I learned today that Belugas are whales, not dolphins, and feel really dumb about it.
Thnx MatPat
Well they are much the same type of creature. Whales are actually just large dolphins for the most part. Did you know the Orca or Killer Whale is actually classes as a dolphin and not a whale?
I in fact did not know that, thank you for the information and have a nice day friend.
They are all part of the cetacea clade.
Tony Cast Darn you i was going to say that...
Yup; no dorsal fins! That's why orcas are dolphins and not whales!!
ok, I've hated the slippery slope argument for a while, you know why? it works both ways, what it says is that "as long as you aren't getting nothing then it's not gambling, so it shouldn't be regulated", so what, does that mean I can set up a poker table for children and as long as I'm giving the loser a piece of candy then I'm not running a gambling scheme?
daaaang
Drakan R I think that's correct.
Yes
But I doubt you would earn any profit
:v
5:15 Holy hecc
I just realized why they’re called Gacha[Insert Gacha game here]
CAUSE ITS ALL BASICALLY RANDOM!!
I feel stupid
It’s actually because of the “gachagacha” sound that is typical of coin-op random-capsule vending machines in Japan. You might have seen “gachapon” as well because of the “pon” sound that happens when a capsule drops out of the machine.
That intro deserved a like on its own.
yeah no, lemme switch to my other account and drop another one
That poor stock image guy is obsessed with casinos, Destiny 2 loot boxes AND collecting baseball cards from 1992. Guy needs some help.
Oh the passive aggressive intro
You brought up the exact example I was thinking of when this controversy hit. I used to collect baseball and hockey cards. I stopped in the late 80's and early 90's because of this. Other examples of this system are your grocery store card which allows them to design the store layout and also to change price points to maximize profits, ITunes Store where songs become album only and movies get pulled from being rented, and the airlines. Basically any place that can collect data is doing it to find the perfect price point.

That intro.
Helarki yeah but loot boxes are optional they often don't change your gameplay experience whether you buy them or not so go and spend $60 on a game you don't have to buy the DLC it's optional and not actually needed
the main reason lootboxes are such a huge issue right now is battlefront 2. because battlefront 2 lootboxes aren't just cosmetic. they actually affect gameplay. they unlock heroes, weapons, and star cards, and whatever else i can't remember off the top of my head. not all lootboxes are the same, and not all lootbox systems are bad, but battlefront 2 lootboxes are definitely the far end of the bad system, and definitely should be removed if they haven't already. because a player who can drop 2k on lootboxes day one is probably gonna get most of what they need while a player who can't even drop $10 is gonna be at a huge disadvantage because not only can they not use boba fett, but even if they can their fett isn't going to be nearly as effective as the player who dropped 2k on lootboxes and got all the good abilities and such unlocked for him.
aah Game Theory. Love your sense of humor. Stay as you are, MatPat
