It's often overlooked, but I think one of the worst symptoms of bipolar disorder is rejection sensitivity. I sometimes avoid forming relationships with new people, not because I dislike them, but because I'm worried they will be disappointed by how unreliable I am. If I meet someone while I'm hypomanic, I feel like it sets an expectation that I'm always energetic and positive. Then, once the high wears off, I feel like I lied to them and misrepresented myself. The depression creeps in and whispers, "You're an imposter and imposters don't deserve friends."

Dating is so hard with bipolar. You have to believe in yourself if you want to date successfully. And it’s hard when that self belief fluctuates so much with the different episodes.
Plus it’s hard to believe in yourself when you don’t even know who you are. It’s hard to know where you end and the bipolar begins.
And on top of that, there’s the stigma of having bipolar in the first place. Many people don’t want to date somebody with a mental illness.
And even if you do get into a relationship with somebody, either they meet you when you’re in mania and hate you when you’re depressed. Or they meet you when you’re in depression and hate you when you’re manic.
The best way is to date other people who also have a mental illness. Then there’s that deeper understanding of how their mind works. That’s a very intense and intimate experience.

Well well well...look who's contributing to stigma. I myself have been suffering from BD (yes, it is not BPD as already mentioned by others) for over 10 years and have looked into the disease intensively (in 10 years, I had time to do so...) so please allow me to break this video down a bit:
1: No, lifelong medication is not always necessary. There are cases (even though they remain rather rare) where the patient has been able to get off his/her meds and is stable. If there's nothing to throw you off the wagon (death of a close person, relocation etc) and especially if you have a stable life (reliable partner, finances are in order, people who support you) you can do without meds,
2: Even though you elaborate on the subject later on, mania is not just high energy and depression isn't just low energy. If it was, it would be sooooooo much easier,
5: Bipolar can be seen in MRI scans of the brain. It has been done in the past and they still do it to date; with improved MRI techniques, they have been able to see even more distinguishments between a healthy and a bipolar brain. Heck, even I had an MRI scan done on my brain once...,
7: Yeah with many more sub types: Rapid Cycling, Ultra Rapid Cycling, Ultra Ultradian Rapid Cycling and, my personal favorite *sarcasm overload*, mixed episodes. And BD Type 1 usually comes with hallucinations and in some rare cases, can even occur if you're suffering from BD Type 2,
8: Stressful situations...is that a new code word for “early childhood trauma”?! Someone who would get BD because of a stressful situation would have to be psychologically speaking very vulnerable. In this case my guess is that there must be some kind of predisposition,
9: We may be crazy but we're not entirely delusional. Rich and famous? Come on, give me a break! XD While you might spend money irrationally, put yourself in risky situations and so on, you don't start thinking that you're Robert Redford while you're just Mr. Average,
10: ...but many don't live life as fully as they used to and some are not able to work anymore or not fulltime at least. It's also about managing energy and strength. How much can you do, when will it be too much and will you have enough time to recharge your batteries in order not to provoke a new episode (even with medication)?
Overall: please do some proper research. It's not like we don't get judged enough already. Putting pretty much everyone in the same pot and making this disease seem like it's not that serious is like a slap in the face to sufferers (it is considered as being a very severe diagnosis). People who don't know might think that it's not such a big deal, maybe question people who cannot work anymore or who cannot take care of their children properly. You're just adding to the stigma when actually, you should help to reduce it. Now, I get that this certainly wasn't your intention, but do me a favor and don't make a video if you don't have all the facts. Or make a longer video with less of those little (and cute) drawings but more content. I guess that would represent a little less work (drawings)...? I don't know, but I'm disappointed in hearing those things. As I said, it's like a slap in the face and trust you me when I tell you that we get enough of those on a regular basis anyway.

@MissRadittsu, rock on, agree with you. But one thing I found so far: including myself (Atypical Bipolar 2) and the other 4 people in our support group with Bipolar 1 NO ONE HAD HALLUCINATIONS on a regular basis but did have infrequent times when they had Psychosis. What I understood from them is their moods would go into rapid cycling but they didn't see things or hear things that were not there. In my case I have Ultra Rapid Cycling but I have never seen or heard things that are not there. We do suffer a lot because of misinfo & stigma. That's why I get upset when people hear I have Bipolar they automatically assume I see and hear things that are not there because I just don't. A lady at church automatically assumes all people with Bipolar experience "Seasonal Affective Disorder" and I try to tell her people with Bipolar experience a wide range of things, and you can't assume cookie cutter experiences for everyone. I also wish people would stop referring to it as a "Mental Illness" when it is actually classified as a Mood Disorder.

You kept referring to bipolar as BPD but the acronym BPD stands for borderline personality disorder. the two are often misdiagnosed for each other because of the similar presentation of mood swings, but borderline personality disorder is more of a relationship disorder and usually has a bigger traumatic past but can be comorbid with bipolar. BPD or otherwise known as borderline personality disorder can also be psychotic and narcissistic!

    • @kallamarsspouse
      @kallamarsspouse 5 лет назад +11

Stop spreading misinformation, BPD is a personality disorder on its own, don't say "Oh it's narcissistic and psychotic too!!" because it's very triggering to have my disorder compared to NPD when I've been traumatized by people with NPD. Bipolar is a mood disorder. BPD is a CLUSTER B personality disorder, not a "relationship disorder". I actually have it and I'm tired of people spouting random bullshit. Not everyone with BPD has psychosis either, I do have psychosis myself but don't be confusing.

My dad had bipolar. It was super hard to be around him. He would fight with my stepmom all the time. They fought every time I came to their house, and it really sucked. One time I had to hide in the bathroom because I didn't want to deal with my dad, my stepdad actually had to come and get me because I couldn't handle it. About 5 months ago I had enough, it had been about a month after the whole bathroom thing and ever since then I was trying to find a way to get out of there. What pushed me over the edge was that my dad screamed at my stepmom, WHILE SHE WAS HAVING AN ANXIETY ATTACK! So I decided that it wasn't safe anymore over there, and I left. I packed all the stuff I would want, and left. Now, before you say "bUt YoU sHoUlD hAvE bEeN mOrE uNdErStAnDiNg" well, I had been dealing with it for 5 years at that point, and it was really taking a toll on my mental state. I was 13 (I'm gonna be 14 in a few days) and he wasn't even there for most of my life. There's a lot more details on what happened in between all of that, but I'm much happier now and going to a therapist. So, ye, that's my story with a bipolar father.

I'm glad you got out and feeling better. I grew up with a bipolar single mom, I didn't got away, I was too scared to leave. That stuff really messed me up. And now, as an adult, I still struggle. I dont think I'll ever be able to forgive her tbh, and i don't want to either, she have never expressed any remorse for ruining my childhood and the person that I became.

It took my brother 5 years and 3 psychiatrists to get a bipolar diagnosis. He was on all these meds that never worked and was constantly on the verge of a psychotic episode. Now he's on the right meds and he's happy, stable, and is going to medical school. Always get a second opinion, trust me it will help.

There’s something about me that is a magnet for Bipolar men. 75% of guys I’ve dated have it, including my current BF. Luckily most of them take care of themselves and medicate properly. I’ve had to help through a few episodes when meds were missed. Best piece of advice I can give is as soon as they share their disorder with you, ask them what you should do for them in those moments. Everyone is different but as long as you have a basic idea of what to do (leave them be/cuddle and soothe, etc) it makes it easier for both of you :)

to be specific, i have bipolar ii. when hypomanic, i become really aggressive and easily agitated. im also much more likely to have panic attacks. during depressive episodes i get horrible intrusive thoughts, with vivid imagery in my mind of said intrusive thought.
im on medication (lamotrigine) now and i feel normal for once. seeing a video like this makes me hapoy because it dismisses harmful stereotypes about BD

I was diagnosed with SAD when I was in highschool, alongside clinical depression. I recently noticed a trend, where I’ll have a depressive episode that lasts about 1-3 months and is immediately followed by at least a month or two months of general happiness and excellent self esteem. It’s a cycle, and that’s what makes my physician think that I might have Bipolar. I have to wait to see a psychiatrist to get a formal diagnosis, but watching this video has helped me to better understand what Bipolar disorder is, and what the chances are that I might have it. I was mis-diagnosed with depression. Then when was put on anti-depressants, I crashed.
Threatening suicide on social media, put in hospital then diagnosed bipolar 2. Now diagnosed bipolar 1. It’s been a rough ride, but once you find the right doctors, right people, things do start to improve.
One very important fact one of my psychiatrist mentioned to me; when people are misdiagnosed with depression and put on antidepressants, the medications are lethal. In my case, I was suffering from being bipolar, not depression.

My cousin has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder this year (not abbreviated bpd btw, that’s borderline personality disorder). She’s 14, but has shown symptoms since she was 4/5 years old. She has social interaction problems and is homeschooled. She acknowledges how hard it is for her parents because when she gets super depressed, she’ll lay in bed all day, and then get up and walk around at night, either screaming at people or crying. But when everything’s “normal”, she will want to go everywhere and do activities that are usually art related with people. She’s very smart, but school is extremely difficult for her. My aunt is desperately afraid of her daughters behavior, and she doesn’t try to help her, she just throws doctors at her. My grandma has done more than her parents ever have. They’re afraid and hopeless, and don’t try. I feel so much sympathy because she’s such a creative and clever person. They favor her little brother, and focus on his schoolwork a lot more than hers. This is all happening in Russia, where treatment for mental diseases is not as openly discussed nor accepted as in America 😬

I was diagnosed with bipolar type 1 'unknown' by blood test, and what you just said really hit the nail on the head. After I had therapy, I was so relieved to get myself off medications, since I was given old fashioned ones for skitsophrenia. To be honest, they weren't helping me and I never had any massive highs or delve to the depths lows. Personally, I feel I was 'put in a box' because even when I was young, going through therapy and etc, there has never been a category for me. Besides if I do have BPD, it has never interfered with my daily life and I don't have the symptoms that would be affiliated with it.

while i really love this channel and will advocate for it’s usually high reliability, this video is kind of misinformed. firstly, the abbreviation for bipolar disorder is BD while BPD stands for borderline personality disorder, which is a completely different type of disorder with extremely different roots. secondly, the mood swings really can’t be accurately compared to those of ADHD or BPD. in both ADHD and BPD, the mood swings are usually frequent and happen throughout the day. on the other hand, bipolar disorder consists of episodes that last a number of days or even weeks or longer, depending on the type of bipolar disorder a sufferer has. one of the criterion for a diagnosis of bipolar 1 is that manic episodes last at least a week, and for bipolar 2 it’s that hypomanic episodes last at least four days. while rapid cycling is a thing, it is not what defines BD and is not in the diagnosis criteria. I’m not sure what exactly the criteria is for cyclothymia so i won’t pretend to know, but the point is that comparing the mood swings of bipolar disorder and ADHD just isn’t accurate, and getting BD and BPD mixed up is also highly inaccurate. i wish they’d done a little more research for this video so they could clear up those common misconceptions.

Man… this fits me to a T. I daydream about my old job and role play in my head as if I were still there. It’s like I revisit the time I went down hill got arrested and lost my job because of it and I’m still there and still in a great leader position putting out fires and still have all my old friends. Then when I come back to reality I get super depressed.

BPD is short for borderline personality disorder, don't call bipolar disorder BPD, just say bipolar because that's confusing and I don't want to be told I'm bipolar whenever I talk about my BPD to people.

When you guys are describing the disorder can you not say “the sufferer” or “suffers from” it puts unnecessary emphasis on the pain they already feel and further stigmatizes and alienates them

I was diagnosis bipolar 2 about 3 years ago. Glad I finally got properly diagnosed. I hid a lot of my more intense symptoms but it got to a point where I couldn't wear that mask anymore. It took over.
