No boxwoods!
Leave it open!
Love to be able to see thru the gardens!
I say no to boxwoods. Your flower garden doesn't need it. It's GLORIOUS as is. Your videos are AWESOME!
It needs it in the winter have you seen it 😂
We say absolutely no to boxwooding the cut flower garden.
Boxwood hedging out at the cut flower garden seems out of character to me.
Everything is looking lovely 🥰
The comments on Laura's videos are always so sweet. Wishing all of you a beautiful day as well 💗☕🌲
Probably because she is so sweet.❤ Have a great day.
@@terrihart2133exactly what I was thinking too 😃. I’m so glad she posts her videos early in the morning. It’s the best way to get my day started!!
Agree with Terri hart, how could we ever say anything hurtful to such a sweet, kind caring mother.😊
Yes, I noticed that, too! I’ve read that gardeners are the happiest people and tend to live long lives!
She is a good Christian woman.
Maybe a tall evergreen on the corners of each quadrant? You’d still have easy access to the cut flowers and a defined shape even in the winter.
That's a GREAT idea!!!!
What a wonderful compromise; structure without formality!
I don’t get the love for boxwoods. Whenever we drive around and see them in hedges there’s always a decaying chunk here and there. To each is own. I think the cut flower garden is glorious as is and in winter we’re all tucked inside anyway.
You said it, Laura, the south garden isn't formal nor is the area with the cut flower garden, etc. So... don't do it!!! No, to the idea of boxwoods out there. Sometimes, it's ok to just stick with the simplicity of gardening.
When you mention boxwoods, all I think of is the maintenance of having them. Their presence out there would confuse the area as well. Again, keep it simple. Your older self will be thankful for it!
Laura won’t have to worry about boxwoods being too close or the maintenance. They will become diseased. She will have the crew dig them out. Laura never considers when planting plants or trees what they will look like in 5, 10 or more years. It is a reality show not for real life. They want instant gratification. I enjoy the videos and Laura, Russel and Cheddar keep me coming back for more. 🐈🐈🌻🌺🥀🌼
Totally agree, Pam. Big no to boxwoods in south garden. Doesn't fit with the rambling nature of it with lots to interest to catch the eye and the freedom of the wild flowers planted around the orchard.
I never have a plan... I just buy what I like and I always find a place for it!
Same same here. Buy first, think where to put later ☺
Same.
Exactly. And just look how beautiful Laura's turned out with that very philosophy.
Ditto!
Have done the same since the mid 70’s…started out by picking out houseplants for my mom’s birthday and a birthday card with a pretty pack of seeds tucked in. Our house looked like a plant jungle and always enjoyed having a vegetable garden and farm animals. Now I have 4 beautiful dogs and a cat that love to lay in the flower beds.
You started out in each area of the south garden, cut flower garden and now the paddock/dirt/open land areas not wanting formality but rather easy creativity and going with the flow. Now here you are yearning for some formality to the cut flower garden through the introduction of boxwood hedging. I say please resist the idea of adding boxwoods, or for that matter, any type of courtyard symmetrical hedging. Nature isn’t “perfect”… the only perfection is Mother Nature’s “imperfections”. The area is beautiful the way it is so no need to change it (yet!). 😅😂❤
Boxwood hedging would be too much. I love the relaxed look. IMO
I vote no for boxwoods in the cut garden. A cute white picket fence maybe?
Black picket fence 😊
Oh I say 'no' on the boxwood edging for your cut flower beds. It would be SOO much work and you wouldn't be able to see all the beautiful flowers on your daily walks and evening drives. I do think a brick edging, like the kind you have around the Hartley, would be nice though? Cheers!
“Boxwood edging around the cut flower garden”, you can just see the wheels turning in Laura’s head😉 Would be a very pretty formal look.
Yes! I love how she says, it could totally be done though, in a sort of hushed tone.
Which means, yes she will do it.
Just don't tell Aaron yet. Lol
Waiting to see the boxwoods start going in!
Boxwoods Installed Around The Cut Flower Garden, Will Be The 'Tipping Point' For Paul And Bethany.
It Will Usher In The Search For An Additional Skilled Team Member Which Laura Announced As Being
Challenging To Find.
I think it would be a mistake personally. So much more work and changes the entire vibe of the quadrants and orchard area. Maybe some columnar evergreens at the entrances of the main walkways and at the outside corners of the area would be enough to satisfy the need for winter interest without a major reworking of the area and a major increase to the maintenance work.
The formality of a boxwood hedge so close to the cottage-y orchard with its taller grass and wildflowers…I don’t think that works.
There's nothing wrong with being sporadic🙃😉. My neighbor caught me just standing in front of my yard today...doing nothing. Then he saw the 10 Dogwood Trees that were delivered and started laughing and said, "I thought you were throwing out your post hole digger?" I didn't of course🙄. I purchased their family's old Farm House with 5.5 acres, no neighbors, and surrounded by farm fields. They're thrilled with the transformation these past 4 years...me too. I purchased a Lynwood Gold Forsythia also because of one of your videos...I'm so excited this year. Everything everywhere is so green and vibrant this year. I live in SW GA and my roses are already on their 2nd bloom of the year too. I bought some Orchids today and watched your video from 7 years ago about them. Thank you again and don't forget to take care of your pretty skin up there 'Olive Oil Lady'😉. My Aunt and Uncle live in Klamath Falls...Lindsey Farms. Thanks again and happy planting!
That larch will be the brightest yellow spot in your garden! I love seeing them in the forest up here in Northern British Columbia Canada! They are far and few between which makes it so magical to see them!
In WA, ID, MT we have many at certain elevations and they are so beautiful in the fall. Our native Western Larch don’t look great up close but from a distance, beautiful! ❤
When we lived in Manitoba they were a common sight but here on Vancouver Island none so far. Didn’t appreciate them as much as I do now.
Good morning all have a safe and blessed day ❤️
We need winter for a blank slate. So our eyes and bodies can rest and our minds can imagine all the wonderful thing that can be.😊❤
As someone who hopes to watch your channel for a long time, it’s reassuring to watch you dream up huge projects, on the fly, that may or may not happen. You seem to have an endless stream of energy and creativity. Im glad you share it through videos.
Laura , please dont plant boxwood around the cut flower garden it is great just as it is love your videos you make my morning every day. I wstch with my coffee I live in a small apt but used to have huge yard roses was my flower at one time I had over45 bushes
Oh my the Larch is beautiful. So soft and cool. The Yarrow is great, love the color. Everything in the South garden is looking good. So different than when you started a few years ago. Love these planting videos. Have a blessed day everyone.
i dont know if boxwood hedges would cramp the cut flower area, but maybe skinny, pointy evergreens on the corners would at least mark up the quadrants in the winter? 😊
Exactly
I wish your videos were longer 🍵 😊 I love watching your creativity!!! It makes me want to run down to my local garden shop and buy everything up!!! 💛🌸🌻🪴💮🌾🌷🏵🌳
I vote No for the box hed,ges around the quadrants of cutting flowers. Reserve "formality" for the Hartley area. You have several "distinct" areas and you should design them each to be their own flavor. Have you considered consulting with an experienced, expert, landscape designer? You wouldn't have to let it be publicly known, or give that person any credit. Just get some good advice and some illustrated design examples of your property's possibilities.
I agree with you. I think what she is looking for isn't formality but what she always talks about in her spaces--winter interest. Boxwood hedging and huge evergreens are her default solutions to that, so I think she can only see one real option there. An outside opinion or source for creative ideas is really needed since she's apparently really missing something pretty in the quadrants in the winter.
Don’t think a boxwood hedge would give the right kind of vibe for this area.
No to more boxwood hedges! You need a more relaxed space in the cut garden. No more boxwood hedges by the Hartley, either. All that boxwood feels too stuffy.
I have been watching a few different gardending channels for a few years now and what you have helped me to realize is that for ME, I like the more clean look of the layout with the layering and such. I didn't know that about myself until I started following you. I don't dislike other gardens but I think my style is also a cleaner look.
Instead of boxwood edging, could you plant a pretty evergreen in 3 out of the 4 corners of each quadrant? As you already have the bench at one corner at each quadrant. Personally I wouldn’t want to eliminate planting space for flowers but you have the amount of space I dream of having.
"That could totally be done,"
I love that! Dream and imagine to create an amazing, one of a kind gatden!
I just wanted to say thank you to you and your family for all the joy you've brought to me. I first found your videos 6 or 7 years ago and you've been a daily pleasure since then! I was never a gardener before, but through your videos I have not only learned how to grow beautiful gardens and feed my family, neighbours, and community, but I've discovered a love and passion for gardening and nature that I never knew was there before! I'm most grateful however that, through this new love of gardening, I've managed to get back pieces of my mom who passed away suddenly 3 years ago shortly after her 63rd birthday. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. Now I get to spend everyday with her, doing what we both love, and loved, purely because of Garden Answer. For this, I can't express my gratitude enough.
Afternoon Everyone 🍃🌹🍃
Morning coffee with Laura is a joyful way to start the day 😊
Love how you make sure you have a good diversity of colors in your gardens! Very inspiring! Can you please show your lemony lace elderberry if you still have it? Thanks! Happy Monday!
I love how she can remember every plant/color she has planted, lol 😊
That Larch is a winner! I just love seing all of the pink tulips winding through the beds!
I RECEIVED MY KNEELING PAD! It's REALLY nice and large!
I am on the same page with the cleanliness and freshness of spring! Everything is new again🙏🏻💚
Laura, you have the perfect property to have a labyrinth!! Or maybe something similar with some plants other than shrubs, it would be so cool to see from the drone. I watch you everyday and would love to just walk around and "smell the flowers ".
A trio of Larch would be so pretty by the new stream! I have never heard of a Larch,i would love to have one.
no more boxwood! Its almost as bad as vista bubblegum. Gah!
I’ve had a larch in our yard that was about 5 ft 30 years ago when we bought our house. Now its at least 25 to 30 ft. Had to replace a dead tree 2 years ago and planted another larch. They are so pretty. Have fun watching it grow.
This year I'm focusing on filling in plants into my gardens as well. I want different kinds that will bring in the butterflies and hummingbirds.
The meadow rue is the host plant for 3 types of Swallow tail butterflies. Yarrow will also attract pollinators to your yard. Best plant I found for attracting Monarch butterflies is the Meadow Blazing Star.
@@majesticgardener5862 Tx you for the suggestions. I love watching Garden Answer. Laura gives so much insight into new plants and bushes I can use in my yard. I live in a mobile home park and my yard is the size of a single wide home. Mine is filled with flower gardens.
I had a larch in my first house 40 years ago - I loved it! I haven't seen one since then - loved it!
❤after watching you I feel that "I" have accomplished exactly what you just did! Thanks for all your hard work Laura can't wait for full bloom!😊😊😊😊
Have a blessed week everyone 🙏🏻💝
No boxwood around the cut flower quadrant! I know you like the look, but there’s so much maintenance involved and risk for damage and I think it would clash with the “feel” of the area. There are some newer very nice hollies with a similar look but without the same challenges as the boxwood and since you have to add holly tone to your other acid loving plants it would be easy to add to the hollies. Another possibility would be to plant just 10-15 feet on each edge of the corners of the quadrants leaving more access while defining the areas in a more informal way. I know it’s not a pond, but maybe the folks who did the plants around your pond would have a suggestion. I thought of them because I know you like what they did and you trust their ideas. 🤷🏼♀️👌
The larch tree is beautiful, it even made Benjamin want to touch the softness ❤
Love the potting shed and orchard area it looks wonderful a wild flower meadow in the orchard area would be lovely I think, I'm always amazed how Laura comes up with all the great ideas for her garden and they always look wonderful you and Aaron have done a wonderful job it looks amazing, thank you for the wonderful videos I've got so may ideas for my own garden from your videos on a much smaller scale and learned so much
That Larch is gorgeous!
It's a joy just seeing your excitement, Laura.
The larch!! 😍😍😍 I love that texture and color! I’m so glad we have someone to watch and get ideas from to beautify our spaces also!
Maybe a very low hedge of something evergreen spilling over a low, stacked stone wall? The wall provides structure and 4-season interest, and gives a bit of oomph to something evergreen, but more of a ground cover for the cut flower area? I know you love boxwoods, Laura, but stacked stone walls can add a little variety and interest, too!
Ive always wanted a stacked stone wall 😍
So much fun to learn about new plants/flowers. Thank you Laura!
Maybe just plant the 4 corners with boxwoods - either one big cone on each corner or an L shape? It would help define the area and provide some winter interest. 😊
I love boxwoods but particularly English Boxwood. Some say it smells like cat pee but it reminds me of my 5 years of living in Scotland. Best smell ever when running through the castle grounds.
Please Laura no boxwood. I love it just the way it is. And the plants you planted today is in the prefect location. They are going to be so beautiful. The yarrow you have planted in the cut flower garden is going to be gorgeous. I want some so bad, that I dug some wild yarrow up and put it in one of my flower beds. Hope I'll yet least one beautiful plant this year. I want the yellow/peach color. The wild yarrow is just that white color, it's already blooming lol. I might regret planting it, but is worth a try. Great video😅
Just scanned the 200(ish) comments and there is a very strong opinion over concept of boxwood hedge around each cut flower quadrant. Funny thing - very strong leaning For and about as many, just as strong, Against. No shortage of opinions from the Garden Answer faithful but absolutely no consensus. Love it!
I enjoyed the music today! So sorry about the freeze! That always hurts to see damage on the new growth.
I can’t wait until you open up your “gardens” for a tour!!
The larch is stunning!
Beautiful sunny, video. I loved Laura showing the new larch tree to Benjamin & pointing out its pretty bark.
O how beautiful is that Larch, love it. I am not a boxwood fan we got that famous caterpillar in ours and no matter what we used we had to take each and everyone out they all died on us in the end.
A blessed evening!!! to everyone....
We currently have a 40' Larch, and a 20' near our front door, we love them! The color in the fall is brigh yellow, and they're coniferous, and deciduous! They lose their 'needles' in the fall :)
Hi Laura I am in Saskatchewan and we have quite a few mature Larch they are a lovely tree except as they get older any little wind they lose branches I am constantly cleaning up branches the other thing which won’t be an issue for you is they drop their needles for winter and blow all over not the easiest to clean up. I have fairly close neighbours and pretty sure they don’t like the trees in fall when they do this. Otherwise they are fast growing trees that attract wildlife and look beautiful swaying in a breeze.
Looks so wonderful. Instead of boxwoods around each quadrant, how about more low stone walls around them. Would give you lots of perching space, less maintenance then boxwood and have a touch of English garden look?.
Hopefully a flower pot competition this year!!
Your cut flower area is nice and wispy. A boxwoods edge would be to structured in that space. It would take away the whimsical feel.
While you were dreaming of a boxwood hedge…I kept thinking…
The flower shed would be so cute with window boxes and a picket fence (like the raised bed garden) on both sides defining it as a separate space from the cut flower garden. Then you could line it with lavender like your other garden! A could see a blooming English rose climber over the door too…
Or over a gated arbor leading to it.
Your placement of plants are always “Perfect “! Love seeing Spring happening!🌷🌸🌹
My Goodness Laura. I’m getting you a t-shirt that’s say “Calm the Boxwood”. They are great and have their place but the cut flower area is so awesome and free. Not a place for boxwoods. And think of all the square footage you’d lose accommodating boxwood size and still having walking area.
Love all these plants 🪴 😍 the garden is waking up 👍👍👏👏👏
The look in her eyes when she said it can totally can be done tho. 😂 Yep. That is so going to happen. I have wondered for a long time why it havent happened already. It is the missing link to tie it all together plus it is THE look.
Love when you plant in larger drifts! It makes such a dynamic impact in the landscape. The Meadow Rue bloom reminds me of Ageratum (Floss Flower) as both have whimsical pompom-shaped blossoms.
Informal out there is BEAUTIFUL!! I love that plan! It’s still a plan …😊
No boxwood. The trees are beautiful. Boy, I wish I had that tree auger
I miss our Tamarack tree we had in VT. They don’t grow in MS where we are now 🥲
Love the Larch.
Hey! Awesome video! Love the larch tree! Anyway, you could start holding a plant tag up to the camera closer like you used to? For years that is how I’ve looked up a lot of the plants I want for my yard and it makes it easier so I can find exactly what it is You’re showing us! Thank you so much for all of your content. It’s a lot of work and we appreciate it!
Thanks Laura!
Good morning!🌻🐝
Really like the larch!
Loved the larch
Hi, I’m wondering since most of us have much smaller properties than you and we don’t have the opportunity to put in swaths of plants, would consider putting in a cottage garden somewhere on your property. I love the swaths but I think it’s harder with smaller properties and the cottage style seems to work for smaller areas. Thanks, I love your videos soo very much.
Love seeing all the different varieties.
Love the boxwood hedge idea!!
Laura...you make planting look easy 👏🤜🤛❤
Love that tree with the other two!
Thank you for inspiring me to try new plants (that I never thought of bc it was so common in my childhood gardens) and seeing them with new (grown up) eyes! 🤣 I do remember loving their little cones though, them playing with them now using in cut flower arrangements.
Love the larch
I would love one day to see the property landscaping as you drive into your property? Like seeing the views from a car
Love the Larch too! And yes to hedging in the cut flower garden 👍
Love your garden
Gonna be so colorful soon
Always enjoy watching your video and all the gardening task in your garden.
I love just go with the flow in planting! I go to the garden shops and love everything!!
Larch are my absolute favorite! So beautiful!
The larch is beautiful, I love the trunk!
Laura,
Love that "Cotton Candy" rue! 😊
The Larch is amazing❤❤❤
Love that Larch!!! Thinking you need one out by the pond!!!
I have to say that as I live in Australia I love waking up to see what you have been up to while I’ve been sleeping 🌸🌸
