This was an amazing video! The tips you gave are the reason I love the internet. You're like that knowledgeable guy at work who doesn't talk down to you, but rather says "This may make it easier!". Thank you!
When I was younger I tackled this job on my own. At this point I no longer have a truck to haul a renter, hard to find help unloading anyway and for my lawn size I can get a commercial service to aerate for not much more than a rental fee. Not to mention it leaves me enough energy to do the rest of my yard work. But nice video post. Clear and thorough. Thanks!
We are currently pending on our first house, I’m so glad I found this channel because I need all the help with lawn care that I can get! Great videos and easy to remember.
This is awesome!! Aerated for first time last year and never knew you should fill front end with water!!! Well if you don't know now you know!!! Prepped lawn alrdy (Fri). Can't wait to aerate on Saturday!!! Thanks again 👍🏾
Thanks for the valuable tips. I bought this home just 4 months ago and now have a lawn in the back yard to care for...which I've never done. I will be renting an aerator soon and your tips will help.
Our local Home Depot stores do not have the Ryan LawnAire aeraters to rent, so I ordered one. First, killing the weeds with Tenacity and then aeration and seeding. Thanks again for all the tips!
Wow, I wish I had seen this video before I areated my lawn. Thanks for the tips. I'll certainly use them the next time. I overseeded and I already see a difference.
The local hardware store I rented mine from last weekend gave me 3 options for model which was really nice. I went with the biggest fastest one lol. Turns out that was a “split tine “ model that allowed for turning each half of the tines independently. Only problem is that I would need a trailer to bring it home because it had a center front tire so loading with ramps onto the back of a truck would not work so I upgraded to the toro hydraulic which was easy to just drive straight up a set of ramps into a truck bed. I also rented ramps for 4 bucks extra. Worth every penny lol. No water weights though, just steel weights in the back. You made all good points here!
That Toro you rented is very nice I owned one of those for a short time. They are awesome to rent, not the greatest to own, very expensive parts but renting and using it's a dream.
My week consists of a Tenacity application Wednesday, core aeration on Saturday with a little seed/fertilizer combo...life is good!!! Gotta get it down before the cooler temps hit here in PA. Great channel for all of us landscapers/green thumbs out there!
About to do this tomorrow. First time I aerate since I got irrigation. I know some of my lines aren’t super deep, though not their exact locations. Fingers crossed. Nothing ruins a minor overseed project quite like no water and having to dig up the yard 😆. Thanks for another good vid! I’ll be using the same aerator so I appreciate the tips!
Thank you very much. I wouldn't worry too much about sprinkler lines they are almost always 10 inches or so below the ground. Mark the heads and things should be good. The sprinklers themselves are 8 inches or so long and the pipe usually is under them so hopefully you will be fine. Thanks again and good luck with your project,
Love your videos. Need your advise. Planning to repair my lawn first week of September. Which following order would be better. 1-aerate, over seed and lever the lawn with top soil. 2- aerate, level lawn with top soil then over seed. 3- level lawn with top soil, aerate then over seed. Thanks in advance.
I had same questions. Turns out #3 is the better thing to do. You should seed after aerating and you don't want to cover up the holes with Top soil so best to Top soil before aerating
Used that same Ryan aerator last season on a friends lawn and it's a real workout. Next day I had a good size bruise on my upper right arm probably from that lowering lever. Home Depot rents that aerator and it does a good job. Rather not do it every year though.
You have a couple good points about mowing and marking spray heads or termite traps. One suggestion to make this so much easier and way more fun. Purchase an agrifab pull behind core aerator for your lawn tractor. Throw on 3-4 flat cement blocks twist off a beer top and ride that mower around the yard to your hearts content! Then no cleanup, no rental rate, no return and much easier on the back!
My local Home Depot tool rental will also rent a 5X8 utility trailer with a drop down gate. Even after draining the water and removing the weights, it's still very heavy.
I have a lot of slopes and hills on my property and when I've rented in the past it is back breaking if not impossible as the only mode of forward movement was the tines pulling through the turf. The machines I have used in the past looks nothing like the one in this video. (no rolling wheel in front. When raising the tines, they still dug in which made turning impossible without man-handling the thing).... Does something like this do a better job of self propulsion when going up a slope?
Definitely. I have many slopes and hills and some are very steep. I do them head on usually and this climbs right up with no issues. These have changed a lot over the years.
Silver Cymbal Thanks. The fact that you take the time to respond to your subscribers makes the channel more valuable. I did check my local Home Depot and they do carry the exact model shown in your video. It’s been years since I rented one but based on this video I think I’m going to give it another shot.
@@DieselMike That's great to hear. That's where this one came from so you should have the same good experience I did. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching.
I tried to read through the comments before asking, you mention the best time to aerate is in the fall but is beneficial or harmful to aerate in the spring? I have not done this before and would like to do it as soon as possible if there is benefit in the spring. Thanks and great videos!
I’ve seen a few manual methods of aerating that drill holes essentially into the soil but do not pull plugs out. Is this a waste of time in your opinion? Isn’t the whole idea to “remove” some cores and doesn’t drilling just compact it more? Trying to decide if I’m going to rent the machine or just drill holes. Thanks!!

This is why I’ve generally stayed away from the aeration process altogether. Another belief I have is if ones lawn looks great, don’t aerate! I do appreciate and view most of your videos however. You always have a lot of helpful advice and information. Thanks!
Interesting. For me aeration in combination with my other steps has been a real game changer for me. But if your lawn already looks great than you are obviously doing something right.
Thanks for all the great info. I’m telling everyone about your channel!!! My question is about another video. Because you have that awesome Tenacity concoction for weeds, do you still use fertilizer with weed killer in it or do you only use the Tenacity for weeds and crabgrass??
Thank you and very helpful. You mention leaving the cores loose on the lawn surface as a top dressing . How is that best done without causing them to be compacted or squashed into multiple little soil “ coins “ which stick onto the grass after walking on them or if using machinery ? Do you suggest going over the lawn with a mower mulcher or similar to “blitz” the cores into a powder as a top dressing and if so does that actually work ?
Should I unplug the aerator tines before using the rental machine? I wonder if they are stopped up with dried plugs from the last renter, will those plugs pop out during my use or continue to plug the tines making it less effective on my lawn.
They will pop out, each consecutive plugs pushes the first one out of the machine, usually they dry out when left for a while and crumble out but I wouldn't worry about it. A shortcut though is to hose them down before you start, they will easily wash out.
I prefer a pull behind the rider mower type with about 300# of weight in the tray. The John Deere labeled one has served well and independent core tines on the axle allows turning and backing, plus core depth is adjustable. The cost is low enough to just buy it.
That's interesting. They stopped selling most of those that have true core and most just have 1/2 sided spoons. I never had great luck with them but you must have a really good one.
The best way I like to load it is to park my truck against an incline anywhere you have one and then I use a piece of plywood that is 3/4" like a ramp, not a full sheet but enough to get it across.
100% do NOT rake them up. There is no need and you would be removing soil. Don't fill the holes either that's why you are making them to allow the surrounding areas to spread out a bit. I’ve been using a “core aerator weighted attachment” that replaces the tines on my tiller. It works fine but is hard to handle (even once a year - haha).
Unfortunately I have never had good experience with the tractor models. They work poorly and I know some guys love them but I think they just love what they own. Best bet is to rent one, or do option 2 and buy one using my super discount video from Home Depot. This is how I bought mine: ruclips.net/video/nc_7RZ-2y5A/видео.html

Thoughts on the plug aerators you can pull behind your riding mower? Looks like if you add enough weight on the top they might be decent. Price is right to buy on of those verse rent a push version a couple times.
Good Day. I missed out on buying one at Home Depot. Maybe next time. What was that backpack sprayer you used in another of your videos. How did you get it in your truck?
Thank you so much for this video and for taking the time to show the different aerators and where the weights are located! Would spring/summer be okay to do this? I know it will be a lot hotter but will it adversely impact my lawn to aerate it in warm temps? Is it possible to add seed during spring or will it make the weeds worse? Thank you!
Absolutely okay to do in Spring, less fun in Summer. You'd have to water more because of the heat. Moist ground is easier to aerate. And ABSOLUTELY overseed/starter/fertilize into the holes!
also, you should make sure the tines are cleaned out, if they're plugged off they don't punch holes. also if they compact with dirt inside the tine cleaning them out becomes difficult.
