Best way to retrieve the chatterbait?

It depends but I would say that a straight, moderate speed, retrieve with a few pauses or pops of the rod tip will get you in the ball park about any day during the summer.

Thanks Miles, do you think a long tapering point with no grass or rock is even worth fishing?

Most certainly is

Yes, it’s very rare to find a long tapering point that doesn’t have some hard spot on it because they usually are exposed to the wind which will keep the bottom cleaner at least in certain spots. Grass isn’t necessary but sometimes helps.
