Great format, profound knowledge and analysis and quite entertaining, gentlemen. I woudn´t consider myself a Bjork fan. However, this album will remain a remarkable piece of work to study. And now, that you mentioned, that the drum sample in "Army of Me" was taken from "When the Levee Breaks" it totally makes sense to me, even without checking back on the track. The more you know... Subbed. Edit: Boo for scratching Hyperballad ;) Then again, I couldn´t think of one song on the album, I didn´t like. So..a man´s gotta do, what a man´s gotta do...

@@scratchatrack My pleasure. You had me thinking for a moment. It would have to be an album, with quite a number of different layers to it, all of them somewhat remarkable. Not easy. I´d go with "13" of Blur. It takes a bit to actually get to the beauty of it. Many find it, I guess somewhat unsettling. That´s mostly the people who loved Blur for being a Hyper-Pop band. Which is exactly the image they wanted to destroy with this album. And they did it beautifully and thoroughly.

@@scratchatrack Thanks for considering it. If you do, please keep in mind that, while they never made it that big in the US, they were huge all over Europe and beyond. It takes guts to come out with an album like that, destroying an image you created over a decade. An image, that at that time had turned into an artistic dead end for them. And once arrived at a dead end, you can just leave the car, you can go reverse or you crush through the dead end with all the consequences it brings. But you might come out a more mature artist and person on the other side.

Very nice and informed analysis, subscribed :). Without bias (although I am a ”Bjorkie”), I can say that she will be remembered as one of the most important artists of the 20eth/21st century. And one of the very few who has four masterpieces in her pocket: Post, Homogenic, Vespertine (and these were IN A ROW!), and her more recent Vulnicura - her ”break-up album”. The last one is currently my favorite. A challenging listen, but worth every genius second. Anyway, good to meet u and good luck with your channel!

Hyperballad is on my shortlist of best songs of all time. So that hurt.
Homogenic is one of my favorite albums of all time. I’d love to see you cover it.
Thom Yorke and björk have loads of mutual respect for each other and have worked together a few times most notably duetting on the Oscar nominated song I’ve Seen It All from the Björk movie Dancer in the Dark.
Isobel is the second part of a trilogy sandwiched between Human Behaviour and Bachelorette from the album Homogenic.

I've been trying to find out if any of Bjork's albums are "pure analog". I suspect Debut is, since it was recorded in 1993. Post, from 1995, might well be pure analog. I suspect Homogenic from 1997 isn't. But I can't find any information confirming any of this.

    • @scratchatrack
      @scratchatrack  Год назад

That is a really good question. This was a big point of transition in the industry for sure. Even if albums were recorded Analog the tapes were put into the computer and mixed that way. I think Debut might be the closest she got to "Pure analog".

She moved to London for the beats because when grunge was the global music style, in the UK trip hop/chemical beats/big beats was developed by bands/ mucisians/producers as Massive Attack, Tricky, Nellee Hooper, Portishead, the Prodigy, Chemical Brother, Underworld. Björk was a part of that scene. I guess it was a European thing but I feel this has been very influencial for all electronic music made upto today.
The jacket she is wearing on the album cover for Post is actually inspired on the air-post envelopes, designed by Hussein Calayan😉

@@scratchatrack Yeah, at the moment Vulnicura is my favorite, but Homogenic is very close…
      My list would be:
      1 Vulnicura
      2 Homogenic
      3 Vespertine
      4 Debut
      5 Post
It depends on my mood which one is number 1 because I like them for different reasons. Debut is nostalgic and was just so exciting and different when it came out. I was 16yo back then and completely into all the bands mentioned above. Grunge was getting a bit mainstream and not that creative while all these English bands were experimenting with electrinics and real instruments. I saw the video of Venus as a boy first, OBSESSED! With each album she released after she was exploring a different sound. Post was for me very much a dance album where I think that Homogenic is just the essence of Björk. Experimenting with electronics and classical instrumentation, poetic lyrics and Icelandic roots. I like dark deep beats so this album is up my street. Vespertine is the opposite but the microbeats and romantic lyrics have a simular impact. Vulnicura is for me much like Homogenic but it is very emotional and brings my to tears so not an everyday thing to listen to. All her other albums are amazing when you listen to them from a musical/conceptual perspective but for me too difficult to listen to. I do sometimes because these projects make Björk stand out from most other artists and elevate her more accessible music. (Wow, this comment is a bit long, sorry guys, just love Björk)

@@scratchatrack I admire Homogenic for its sheer force of innovation and that very rare thing in pop music, of synchronicity of grand vision and execution. But Vespertine is just a personal intimate, unadulterated joy, like a warm fluffy blanket your grandma made for you. In this album, I don’t care much for I Miss You. Not because it’s a bad tune as such but only because it sort of sticks out like a sore thumb here. 😊
