    Columbo played himself down. He dressed unimpresivly, drove a junk car and stayed courteous at all ttimes. He never arroused a suspects defense instincts. Instead they revealed secrets to be rid of the annoyance.
    The criminal thought he was an idiot right uo until the arrest.
    Using a similar technique with theology can get your "opponent " to convince himself.

    Right on! If someone is thinking of defense of their view they aren't as able to think of offence. I Always genuinely do this calmly and out of love. People can sense a trap. I seek to Know when to back off. When I know I have the time, if possible, like at work, I keep quiet and observe alot first to see who if anyone God is leading me to (generally they act christian in some ways or hold biblical beliefs, but in conflict with their rejection of Jesus.) Their conversation with others at breaks etc. will tell alot if I stay the person who isn't offended that they can say anything around. Its kinda like getting a feral cat to eat out of your hand. You must first be genuinely concerned about them more than your "victory". Most importantly, I try to live a non hypocritical life before them. My first questions are not even related to Christ. I try to have a working knowledge about their interests to converse on. Mabey days or weeks later when I do breach the subject it's usually by asking how have they been hurt by "Christians " . Then I show them biblically how those people weren't following Christ. Usually they will have bad theological views, I ask God to help me lead them into what I call the sublime paradox. Something that reveals in their mind the falsehood of what they believe! I just gently ask them how they reconcile that and let it gnaw on them for a few days! I always have a pocket bible on me, but at first I Use the bible sparingly if at all, they probably don't believe it anyway. They will have a sense of justice, I Appeal to that and show them what beliefs they have that are already biblical. I am always transparent in my own past and present failures. I always try to remember K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Saint!) When preaching the gospel! Smart is having knowledge, intelligence is knowing how to apply it, Wisdom is knowing when NOT to! Good Hunting!

      Likely the monitor showing what we would be seeing and/or any stats on audio, memos from the person taking care of audiovisuals or prompts to ask more or more on, a countdown timer with reminders of what to ask next, when to wrap it up, announcements, any and all of the above, plus something else, none of the above or something completely different. But she’s definitely reading or gauging something going by her eye movements, expression and she subtly mouthes what she’s seeing.

    Since when does the Gospel require a tactic ?

    • @klarag7059
      @klarag7059 3 года назад +2

      The delivery requires a “tactic”, not the Gospel. This style of relating to others in order to open a path for reception to the Gospel is culturally appropriate for most western nations peoples. It’s a Roman thought perspective, if I’m not mistaken. It’s not so accepted in some Asian, European and Middle Eastern people groups when their perspective and relational style is different to mostly English speaking countries. Cross cultural missionaries study how to live among people of different cultures and also how to most effectively share the Gospel with them.
      This book is like taking the psychology of Western thought and applying communication and persuasive argument skills into an approach for sharing the Gospel in a manner that is caring and humble, leaving the work of persuasion and transformation to the Holy Spirit.
      Consider what Paul did the first time he was in Ephesus. He learned their ways and customs, how they thought and communicated, what they believed in and where they had rightly observed God through His creation. He used a tactic appropriate for the people of Ephesus in that area and time.

      Does the word tactic sound a bit out of place to you? It seems to me that Koukl is really talking about how to have a meaningful conversation. Don't we all use tactics in conversation? Is preaching is a tactic? Is sharing a gospel tract a tactic? How about quoting scripture?

    • @lindajohnson4204
      @lindajohnson4204 2 года назад

      @@btopines9922 But we reserve the right and responsibility to question methods and tactics, especially if they suggest too much confidence in the flesh. We cannot drive a person to receive Jesus through psychology. Sure, we should try to use some wisdom, basically to not get in the way of the person responding to the Holy Spirit. But we cannot get a person saved through any amount of finesse or methodology. We cant "close" on salvation, like a salesman tries to manipulate a buyer into buying.
      What alarmed me about Columbo as a salvation tactician is that he was seemingly not so smart, but it was a ruse, to get the target to underestimate his intelligence. It was really about old Columbo drawing a noose around them, and he subtly, gradually let them know that he was closing in on them! Columbo acted like a friend, but he was not their friend! I still have not been able to see how evangelism could apply anything about Columbo to sharing the gospel, unless it would be real humility, in the place of Columbo's seeming good natured affability. Koukl probably has another take on Columbo that I don't see. But many teachers online are minimizing or denying the need for the Holy Spirit to convict the person of God's truth. It is all about psychology, about logic, about politics, about whatever, but it isn't the spiritual drawing and conviction of sin Jesus said was necessary. I don't know whether to expect that from Greg Koukl or not, but there is a lot of it going on.

    "Columbo" is humble. He listens to God instead of the ego. God's voice comes in peace, not with an agenda, each agenda is given to us in the moment, not previously. Listen. God will speak through the person you are talking with. Trust God in that person. You are just drawing out the peace in that person as well as the peace within yourself. That's where the kingdom of God is. Then the conversation will be peaceful.
    Just my addition to the valuable ideas Greg has.

    I know some people avoid the questions or dominate the conversation by sarcasm and making jokes about something. They never have anything to say but they interrupt a lot and get you off topic and distract you so you forget about what it is you are talking about. If you have to keep interrupting them to ask your questions you have to think about your topic and keep coming back to the point over and over again. I would give up on them because it's too much work and very exhausting to keep on topic.

    It's a good method for a fundamentalist Christian because it offers a distraction from the real question, which is whether people ought to arrange their lives around a god who may or may not exist. It's a good way to dominate the conversation, but it doesn't help a fundamentalist and his interlocutor get any closer to the truth.

      Sadly, the “insurrection”, as its being called, is the worst example in history. Who comes to a planned insurrection unarmed? There were 100s of thousands of people there. If the plan was to over throw the government or destroy democracy, they could’ve easily done that with the sheer bony bets that were there. How can the words “peacefully and patriotically making our voices heard” be construed as inciting an insurrection? If you believe this was an insurrection, then you must hold that same candle to the 2020 riots/insurrection. What happened on Jan 6th had nothing to do with Yahushua (aka Jesus) or Trump. Trump hadn’t even finished speaking before the Capitol police let people into the Capitol. Ask yourself, why was President Trump’s request for extra security for 1/6 denied by Pelosi? Why did the media lie about the deaths that happened that day? Why was an Antifa head (John Sullivan) shown on camera congratulating himself and others that they were able to get people to come into the Capitol? There are so many questions that need answering, but Pesoli’s witch-hunt commission will not bring out truth, it will only lend itself to further divide and keep the American people from the truth. I don’t care what McCarthy did. He’s does not represent republicans or real American Patriots who care about this country. We believed, by evidence that we were shown, but the media would not allow anyone to see it, and the affidavits under oath, that fraud was committed. Therefore, we believed that a REAL forensic audit was necessary before the electoral certifications took place. In 2016, the dems were able to question the legitimacy of the election and were able to object to the certification without so much as a sneeze. But when conservatives/republicans believe the election was stolen, we’re deemed domestic terrorists and a threat to democracy. The hypocrisy and 2 tiered rule of law is obvious to some, but not to those who it favors. The only thing that was done in Yahushua’s name, on 1/6, was a call for truth. Anyone that engaged in violence or vandalism should held accountable. But again, where’s the accountability for 2020? Critical thinking is paramount in these times when there is a nefarious agenda to brainwash people into thinking America is rotten to the core and that white people are all racist and white suprematists. This hyper-partisan rhetoric has to stop and the dems have been the biggest perpetrators of them all. Pray and ask Yahweh to reveal the truth because your question shows you do not know the truth yet.
      Have a nice day!!
