  • Columbo also tricks Montoya into letting him cast an eye over his finance books, which Hector was supposedly working on on the day of his death. He uncovers the clincher: Hector finished work on the books for the month three days before he was killed - and Montoya signed them off.

It's true that Columbo doesn't know the first thing about bullfighting. But it's equally true that Montoya doesn't know the first thing about murder investigations. Plus, Montoya's experience in murders was nonexistent before this case. That's always Columbo's advantage. Columbo's smart enough to acquire the knowledge here about bullfighting required to break down Montoya's staged set-up. But Montoya cannot undo his mistakes in the actual murder that occurred because of his lack of experience in that particular area.

At 4:31, “If Hector finished the books…” has the same tone as the film, “A Few Good Men” that obviously came much later. You know, the whole part when Tom Cruise says something like “If your orders are always followed and you told the soldiers not to touch Santiago, then why did Santiago have to be protected?” “Why the two orders?” And here, Montoya goes berserk right after and in the aforementioned film, we have the whole “You can’t handle the truth!” scene.
Most probably a coincidence. It has the same structure, tone and rhythm to an extent. A key difference is that in Tom’s film, that’s the climax so it goes to a crescendo. Here it’s not the climax but setting the stage for it so it does intensify but pulls back.
Or maybe Sorkin was influenced by Columbo. Someone should ask him…. With just one more question.

An aristocrat like Montoya wasn't used to not being in control of a situation. He probably had enough political clout to get around the local police and a detective like Sanchez, who was too young to have the backing to take him on. But by deputizing Columbo to be the one to deal with him it took his advantage away and put him on the defensive. The second he's caught in an obvious lie, all he can do is blow his top and play the "don't you know who I am" card.

It is Mexico and Mexican law we are talking about here. Columbo is just helping the Mexican police and in particular Commandant Sanchez to get to the bottom of the murder. If Montoya refused to give Columbo access to the info without a court order, it would be up to Sanchez to procure one. The police getting a warrant is a simple as the screenwriters writing it in to the plot.

Not having seen this full episode, from the looks of it, Columbo was just fishing for clues here. I'm guessing he already had a pile of incriminating evidence against Montoya before he even walked in the door. This was just to confirm his suspicions.

That info wouldn't have been crucial to a conviction anyway. What Columbo proved was Montoya was not away from his ranch when the killing happened because of the weather report. High winds but without rain came up when Montoya said he had left for San Diego and that must have been when the victim he fought the bull alone. If that were true then the victim would have poured water on the muleta to stop it blowing about unpredictably in the wind, but it was dry and there was no water jug in the ring. The icing on the cake was when everybody saw Montoya freeze in fear in front of the bull.
