- We have tools for creating and modifying user accounts, but what do they actually DO behind the scenes?
I'm glad you asked. :)
This video covers the actual files where user account information is stored, along with some tools to keep your system more secure. Or, possibly to accidentally lock yourself out of the system. Sadly, I've done the latter more than I care to admit.
This video covers passwd, chage, faillock, pam_tally2, vipw, and a few other helpful tools.

Minimum password days helps with someone changing their password back to the original first password, however it needs to be used with something that manages password history (there’s a few ways to set this).
So with no min age and if a user was setup that the system remembers 5 passwords, that user can cycle through all 5 passwords and get back to the first password and use it forever.
I pause the video to say the same thing. To add, it's usually used in enterprise environments where PCI, HIPAA, etc regulations are enforced.
Very fair points, and Lamar adds even more context to where it would be appropriate. Thank you both!
Really good example, thank you!
waiting on this course to finish :(
They should call it "The Final Countdown" , instead of "inactive days".
I think they do… in… EUROPE! (Oh man, thanks for that set up, lol!)
I'm getting close to the end of your series thus far. I DONT WANNA GO BACK TO THE BORING PEOPLE!!!! Save me @shawnpowers
I'll try REALLY hard to get back on track!!! :D
Really appreciate you making this fun! I have an interview as a Linux Admin and am trying to get the Linux+ in preperation for the final interview sometime after the new year. @@shawnp0wers
