    My dad was a volunteer cop from 1984 to the late 90s. He was actually issued the same kind of revolver in that video, a 38 special, and was allowed to keep it when the department retired them. After that, he was given a 9mm pistol. I showed him those old police training videos from RUclips, and he said it was the same thing he had to watch in the Academy, and always said they were too cheesey even then. Today, my dad is in his 60s and has rather fond memories of his days as a cop on beat..

    In my town, the local bank is only a few blocks from the local dispatch operating center, and the tip of a triangle from there and city hall (where the cruisers stay along with fire department and volunteers)
    So long story short, we still have that system, and from what I've heard when you start at that bank they show it to you even though it isn't used anymore. It's mostly just a classic piece of equipment they keep for no reason.

      I found myself wondering the same thing, especially given the description of the suspect sure as hell didn't match, who was coming out of the jewelry store. Oh dear God I am so familiar with some of these old videos. I would be considered such a monster 20 years ago. I'm sure people were members of videos that they used to play for driver's ed and so forth. Like the video above throwing foreign objects at passing trains, yes that is literally a warning video they used to play in schools. God God God ministries size theater hasn't got anything on some of these old videos from the 70s and 80s and 60s. I'm surprised more people don't realize the Rodney King beating could have literally been a training video! Police officers were trained in the 1970s to be pretty liberal with their batons and focus on the head and shoulders and to continue hitting a suspect until movement stopped. I can't even make this up. There's videos out there from the 70s that Word for Word describe what I just said some videos would recommend beginning with the kneecaps and then work your way to the head and shoulders, but generally they suggested head and shoulders on till movement ceases or until suspect stops resisting arrest. Don't get me started with the original Stun gun that nobody remembers!the originals were quoted as instantly immobilizing any suspect for a minimum of 20 min. inducing unconsciousness. The originals stun guns didn't play around and make you twitch and go on like you were zapped with the devil stick. The originals when a suspect, got nailed with them. They immediately went down like a sack of potatoes and were unconscious board and the 20 min. or longer. There was no jumping around or going aow and then getting back up and running. There's a few training videos out there for the stun gun that literally prove my point. They show somebody getting nailed with it and they immediately drop completely immobile and get carried off unconscious. God those old videos, we used to see a lot of them in schools. Various safety videos I mean.I wonder is there a RUclips channel dedicated specifically to these horrible videos based on company. Man the ones on homosexuality and marijuana had to be the most hilarious. Dear Lord Jesus Ira member one alone where this guy smoking a joint. Just for no reason drives up in his car throws the door open and walks away as the car continues driving down the street. It was downright hilarious. Usually several people died in those movies after smoking one joint or ended up having permanent brain damage and other such foolishness. In their defense though there were people who died from smoking marijuana and got bad brain damage where there was some cases of tainted marijuana in the 70s and 60s couple of different pesticides that were being used made some batches of drugs highly illegal and a lot of druggies died.
      A relative of mine was responsible for firearms training of police officers in taxes. After a fair amount of time he quit the job due to risk of his own safety. LOL. This was back in the 19, he's and the way they were handling firearms gave him nightmares between dropping loaded weapons on the firing range chasing suspects into a crowd and firing using a shotgun and the list goes on. These were veteran officers. To make matters worse, not rookies. He nearly got accidentally shot several times on the range, which was a big part of why he quit. He used to complain. They had little to no respect for their firearms and it just drove him crazy.

    So, I'm an old cop....depending on your department, you received let's be generous and say, training that fell into a range of quality. Ricochet shots, corner-rounding, and other techniques were not commonplace I would say back then. There were also issues with headshots, shooting people in the back, and kicking people in the balls. Society in general was different and we really were expected to behave a certain way. I won't say letting people draw on you, or fire the first shot was expected, but...people had ideas. We were supposed to be knights. Things have changed an awful lot now.
    P.S. The model 10 .38 everyone carried was a dream on annual range day. Those things shot like they were hand-made match pistols

    I started my career in law enforcement in 1973. So, yeah, that is the type of uniforms and weapons we had. We had a revolver, a "dump pouch" of extra ammo and handcuffs on our belt. I had some "cable ties" inside the brim of my hat in case I needed "extra handcuffs". I later bought a S&W Model 40 Centennial which I carried in my pants pocket (or coat pocket in winter) as a backup and also my off duty gun. Later they hung all manner of "stuff" on our belts. Some of it was great...radios the size and weight of a brick that went with us for example. Most officers had to buy their own revolver within the guidelines specified. We had either a Remington 870 or Ithaca M37 shotgun in the car in a "Leco Lock". It was mounted point up on the dashboard. Loaded magazine, empty chamber. The lock clamped the gun between the slide handle and receiver so it couldn't be chambered unless released. I always took the shotgun if I had the opportunity (active alarms, robberies etc).
    We wore slacks with stripes, clip on ties, black leather shoes, patrolman hat when out of the vehicle. Body armor didn't become common until later. We had .38/.357 revolvers in our department until 1989. They were replaced with a dept issued Beretta M92FS 9mm.
    I retired from local law enforcement in 2001 and worked with a Federal agency overseas until I finally retired in 2014. I still have my first duty revolver, a Colt Trooper MKIII .357, nickle, with 4" barrel. And the sales receipt...$154 in 1973. 😁 That was a LOT of money to a young guy just starting out. Now I enjoy shooting, fishing and just enjoying being retired (I wasn't too good at it at first, but I am getting better at it)

    I remember the training videos and how today's officers would cringe at some of what went on back then. I also remember the dispatch console as I spent 5 years sitting at one. It was interesting to say the least, especially since I dispatched police, fire and ambulance and no call taker. I had to take the calls on the phones and dispatched the units without anyone else around and it got really busy at times.

    what kind of shotgun has a 20 foot spread at what was that, 30 feet? I don't think even blunderbuss were that bad. Unless they've really changed things since the 70's all the shotguns I've used have a 2 foot spread with buckshot at 50 yards. YARDS man.

    • @sarahwatson7692
      @sarahwatson7692 5 лет назад +8

      nivarion The typical police issue shotgun of that time had a cylinder bore and at fifty yards would have a pattern six to eight feet wide. It would not be unusual that no single pellet hit the target.

    • @sarahwatson7692
      @sarahwatson7692 5 лет назад +8

      Skeptical American See Chuck Taylor’s article on police shotguns using buckshot in old copies of Combat Handguns. The typical issued 870 would not keep all 9 pellets on a torso at 15-20 yards much less 50. Mine was no exception. Most shotguns would throw patterns shaped like donuts and had gaping holes in the center of the pattern. Cylinder bore shotguns still perform in this manner. Using certain brands of ammo and proper choking good patterns can be gotten at extended ranges. At the time of the articles Federal had just begun offering a 00 load featuring copper plated shot and polystyrene buffering. This ammo dramatically increased the SAFE effective range-almost doubling the range at which all the pellets would stay on a human torso.

    • @sarahwatson7692
      @sarahwatson7692 5 лет назад +2

      Taylor also described a peculiar phenomenon displayed by singular shotguns. The gun would only place four or five pellets on a torso at twenty five yards. At fifty the same gun and ammo would shoot a circular ten inch group! This was the part of the article I was skeptical about. In testing this for myself I found my Smith and Wesson 3000 would do the same thing with certain brands of buckshot!! Neither the S&W nor my two 870s would keep all pellets on a human size torso at twenty five yards with buckshot available at that time.

    3:00 -- Most cops didn't have face fur until about 1990, except PC and the Dope Patrol, at least in SoCal. Show up for regular harness duty (even motors) with a stache (even one within grooming standards), you would go through an endless round of "you need to stand closer to your razor" or "Oh, I thought you were the suspect!" comments.
    Remember, this was in or just after the hippie thing, and nobody wanted to look anything but neat and clean. Sideburns to the bottom of the ear opening was about the limit in grooming standards -- hair off the collar, tops of ears clear, and so on.
    And the WHOLE POINT of the film was to get officers to think about whether or not to use the shotgun. City cops didn't have rifles then, so if they didn't think that the .38 was enough, there was no other option. Some agencies allowed Sergeant and above to carry non-issue pistols, but as a general rule, if you were in a radio car, the sidearm was either a Colt or Smith, firing department-issued, jacketed or gilded .38 Spl -- no Plus P, no soft point (much less HOLLOW point). Even HAVING a box of Super Vel could get you papered some places, as the rise of the Lawsuit Brigade washed out of the manhole covers.
    The only thing more hilarious than watching the old training films is watching guys who were trained after another couple of decades of development and changes ignorantly applying today's standard to yesterday's doctrines.
