My father flew Lancasters with 61 Squadron during WW2. He said the aircraft handled beautifully and always brought him and his crew home safely, despite extra ventilation, courtesy of the Luftwaffe and flak!
4 Rolls Royce Merlin engines as used in most Spitfire, all Hurricane and Mosquito and the most P 51, in fact they were used on over 40 different planes. The most important aero engine ever.
Good Shots and wonderful sound, some 2700 Lancasters were built in a factory at Yeadon in West Yorkshire, as a Kid, I often watched these aircraft roll out, Many ATA Auxilliary Air Transport Ladies piloted the bombers to what ever airfield they were to fly from.Amazing Bombers which carried HUGE loads.
Interesting---as a toddler during the war, I remember sitting in my 'Push chair'' in the Garden, and small planes roaring overhead. We lived about 10 miles from the Spitfire Factory at Castle Bromwhich, Nr Birmingham. I should think that most were being flown by those heroic ladies of the ATA also.
Yes, but it was an Allied effort, and one of the few acts of humanity that the Nazis allowed. They too were cut off from their food supplies, I wonder if the deal allowed for some drops for them , anyone know?
My father was ground crew on bomber command from 1940 to his de-mob in 1946 and was on 149 Squadron RAF at Mildehall and Lakenheath. This was one of the squadrons involved in the aid to Holland at the end of the war. The Lanc was his favourite of all the heavy bombers. Whenever it flew over us when I was a kid he always seemed to hear it before me and would dash out into the garden to see it! I took him to the IWM at Duxford a couple of years before he died and as he stood underneath their Lanc I could see his eyes fill with tears. Thanks for posting this vid

This is a big surprise for me, I had not heard of this visit. It's good to see the Dutch appreciating what those 58,000 dead airmen did, for the liberation from evil, of Nazism. Among whom, was my 22year old Half Brother, who was killed on THE last bombing raid on Germany, 5 days from wars end.

I have stood underneath a Lancaster bomber and even been aboard one but one thing has always amazed me. How did they ever get off the ground. Great video by the way.
Wow...lots of drama here. Britain and the US are allies and always will be. Everyone is hopefully proud to be what they are. I am an American and proud of it. Both Americans and Brits have plenty to be proud of as far as WWII is concerned. Anyone from one of the Commonwealth nations should feel the same hopefully. Does anyone care about who made an engine? Yeah, Packard built the V-1650 but it was clearly a British engine. Our P-51 would have been a fairly mediocre aircraft had it not been for that engine; talk about a great pairing. So, I suppose many of those engines were made in the US. We in the US had some pretty major geographic advantages. Canada (best neighbor you could ever want) on one side, Mexico on the other, and the world's two largest oceans to the east and west. We were simply too far away for Germany or Japan to really get to us. So, a LOT was produced here.
You can't even get the freeking government to allow the proper octane fuels for many of these precious War Birds any more. Damn Politicians. What are we thinking letting them have that kind of power ? It's Outrageous !
To think, there were once thousands of those in Southern England. Imagine the chatter of the ground crews, RAF and Army Air Corps, watching those guys go on their missions, and some of them returning. Just another day in the war.
There are stiil loads buried in the Dutch mud and sea (also Wellingtons) which every so often get dug up and the crew laid to rest in one of the many CWGC cemeteries.
So as far as I'm aware there was no co-pilot on these; one pilot w/ a flight engineer and navigator (plus radio operator, gunners and bomb aimer) Assuming that's correct what a mission to solo-pilot one of these all the way to Germany and back again, often at night. Feats of high endurance, fortitude & resilience. Which all crew of course displayed (if they made it back; thinking here of the rear gunners particularly). And heck it must've been damn cold in those things, especially in winter. Amazing.
The Lanc flew with a crew of SEVEN, as compared to the B-17's original crew of ten, later reduced to nine. No co-pilot and it didn't have a belly, or ball, turret which made it vulnerable from attacks from below. Reduced defensive firepower was partially compensated for by flying almost exclusively night attacks, except when special missions like hitting KMS Tirpitz required more precise targeting.
I worked at the Woodford site in the UK (home of the Avro Lancaster) for 15 years. It was a really iconic place full of history.....all now demolished and replaced with a housing estate.

The Canadians liberated the Netherlands, from September 1944 to 1945. Why do you think when any Canadian goes over to the Netherlands they're treated like Gods, and welcomed with respect for what Canada accomplished in that dark time in history!! There's also an Avro Lancaster in Canada, and another being repaired at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum-(CWHM), in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. In fact, Avro Lancaster's were also produced at the Victory factory in Malton, Ontario, a total of 430 Avro Lancaster Mk were built. Another note, a secret Avro Arrow was found found on the bottom of Lake Ontario, to which I believe a crew is going to try to get her up off the bottom and try to repair her, and might be able to fly again.

2023 version.? Everything new(engineering-techniques and materials up-to 2010/2014). Outside looks the same. Wider cockpit. Front and rear 30mm optional. Loiter hours = ... center is for pompous-dictator to sun-tan (usually feathered hat type).
Beautiful aircraft. Death traps though, the omission of underside machine gun mounts meant the Lancaster was very susceptible to enemy fighter gunfire from underneath.
Worse for the crew though, is apparently Lancasters were extremely difficult to bail out of, with a survival rate of just 15%, compared to near 50% for the B17s and B24s of the USAAF. Brave men indeed.

Who cares if the engines were Packard Merlin or Merlin. This bomber was a beautiful UK designed aircraft that could carry an enormous bomb load, far greater than any other bomber of that period. The engines were mainly Merlin by designed and perhaps some were Packard produced. The unique strength lay in the fact that they were also flown by young men from the Commonwealth being the UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand etc... and who care for Wilbur Finnigan's biased opinion...I've met WW2 US airforce pilots who flew with the Australians and held the RAAF British aircraft in high esteem. I've met their 3rd Bomb Group pilots who flew in the Battle of the Bismark sea as ONE fighting unit who were in awe of the firepower and quietness of the sleeve valve Hercules radial engines powered Beaufighters. Those aircraft strafed the decks of the Jap destroyers whislt the US B25's skip bombed those ships, with P 38 US fighters providing top cover... Finnigan is a dick.

The Lanc didn't participate in the "Battle of Britain" - I don't think it even existed yet. It was developed from a similar TWO engined bomber that didn't have the range, speed, or payload needed to do the job. I believe they were counting on much more powerful engines - eventually! - to obtain that but the ready solution was a longer wingspan and four Merlin's. IIRC they even drew up plans for a radial-engined version of the Lanc in case the Merlin engine came into short supply. No US heavy or medium bomber used inline engines - they all had the simpler radials from Pratt&Whitney or Wright. Putting four V12's onto a bomber was no easy feat of engineering - look at the very long engine nacelles and what would be required to support them from the wing stucture, then add all the piping for the water cooling system.

One half of all the 7700 lancasters built, 3,440 , had the PACKARD built in USA Merlins in them, the British built Mk B III and the Canadian built Mk X....just a FYI... This Battle of Britain version is a Mk I powered by the RR built engine,,,,

There will soon be a number 3 Lancaster flying, it is being brought back to airworthy condition at the moment, 100% stripped and rebuilt.

Wow...lots of drama here. Britain and the US are allies and always will be. Everyone is hopefully proud to be what they are. I am an American and proud of it. Both Americans and Brits have plenty to be proud of as far as WWII is concerned. Anyone from one of the Commonwealth nations should feel the same hopefully.
Does anyone care about who made an engine? Yeah, Packard built the V-1650 but it was clearly a British engine. Our P-51 would have been a fairly mediocre aircraft had it not been for that engine; talk about a great pairing. So, I suppose many of those engines were made in the US.
We in the US had some pretty major geographic advantages. Canada (best neighbor you could ever want) on one side, Mexico on the other, and the world's two largest oceans to the east and west. We were simply too far away for Germany or Japan to really get to us. So, a LOT was produced here.

You can't even get the freeking government to allow the proper octane fuels for many of these precious War Birds any more. Damn Politicians. What are we thinking letting them have that kind of power ? It's Outrageous !
To think, there were once thousands of those in Southern England. Imagine the chatter of the ground crews, RAF and Army Air Corps, watching those guys go on their missions, and some of them returning. Just another day in the war.
There are stiil loads buried in the Dutch mud and sea (also Wellingtons) which every so often get dug up and the crew laid to rest in one of the many CWGC cemeteries.

So as far as I'm aware there was no co-pilot on these; one pilot w/ a flight engineer and navigator (plus radio operator, gunners and bomb aimer) Assuming that's correct what a mission to solo-pilot one of these all the way to Germany and back again, often at night. Feats of high endurance, fortitude & resilience. Which all crew of course displayed (if they made it back; thinking here of the rear gunners particularly). And heck it must've been damn cold in those things, especially in winter. Amazing.

The Lanc flew with a crew of SEVEN, as compared to the B-17's original crew of ten, later reduced to nine. No co-pilot and it didn't have a belly, or ball, turret which made it vulnerable from attacks from below. Reduced defensive firepower was partially compensated for by flying almost exclusively night attacks, except when special missions like hitting KMS Tirpitz required more precise targeting.
I worked at the Woodford site in the UK (home of the Avro Lancaster) for 15 years. It was a really iconic place full of history.....all now demolished and replaced with a housing estate.

The Canadians liberated the Netherlands, from September 1944 to 1945. Why do you think when any Canadian goes over to the Netherlands they're treated like Gods, and welcomed with respect for what Canada accomplished in that dark time in history!! There's also an Avro Lancaster in Canada, and another being repaired at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum-(CWHM), in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. In fact, Avro Lancaster's were also produced at the Victory factory in Malton, Ontario, a total of 430 Avro Lancaster Mk were built. Another note, a secret Avro Arrow was found found on the bottom of Lake Ontario, to which I believe a crew is going to try to get her up off the bottom and try to repair her, and might be able to fly again.

2023 version.? Everything new(engineering-techniques and materials up-to 2010/2014). Outside looks the same. Wider cockpit. Front and rear 30mm optional. Loiter hours = ... center is for pompous-dictator to sun-tan (usually feathered hat type).
Beautiful aircraft. Death traps though, the omission of underside machine gun mounts meant the Lancaster was very susceptible to enemy fighter gunfire from underneath.

Worse for the crew though, is apparently Lancasters were extremely difficult to bail out of, with a survival rate of just 15%, compared to near 50% for the B17s and B24s of the USAAF. Brave men indeed.

Who cares if the engines were Packard Merlin or Merlin. This bomber was a beautiful UK designed aircraft that could carry an enormous bomb load, far greater than any other bomber of that period. The engines were mainly Merlin by designed and perhaps some were Packard produced. The unique strength lay in the fact that they were also flown by young men from the Commonwealth being the UK, Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand etc...
and who care for Wilbur Finnigan's biased opinion...I've met WW2 US airforce pilots who flew with the Australians and held the RAAF British aircraft in high esteem. I've met their 3rd Bomb Group pilots who flew in the Battle of the Bismark sea as ONE fighting unit who were in awe of the firepower and quietness of the sleeve valve Hercules radial engines powered Beaufighters. Those aircraft strafed the decks of the Jap destroyers whislt the US B25's skip bombed those ships, with P 38 US fighters providing top cover... Finnigan is a dick.

The Lanc didn't participate in the "Battle of Britain" - I don't think it even existed yet. It was developed from a similar TWO engined bomber that didn't have the range, speed, or payload needed to do the job. I believe they were counting on much more powerful engines - eventually! - to obtain that but the ready solution was a longer wingspan and four Merlin's. IIRC they even drew up plans for a radial-engined version of the Lanc in case the Merlin engine came into short supply. No US heavy or medium bomber used inline engines - they all had the simpler radials from Pratt&Whitney or Wright. Putting four V12's onto a bomber was no easy feat of engineering - look at the very long engine nacelles and what would be required to support them from the wing stucture, then add all the piping for the water cooling system.
The Battle of Britain was between fighters NOT heavy bombers. Guess you MUST be American.

One half of all the 7700 lancasters built, 3,440 , had the PACKARD built in USA Merlins in them, the British built Mk B III and the Canadian built Mk X....just a FYI... This Battle of Britain version is a Mk I powered by the RR built engine,,,,
