- SENATE JUDICIARY DEBATES THE RIGHT TO PEACEFULLY ASSEMBLE: Sens. Kamala Harris, Cory Booker, and other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee hold a hearing on the rights of Americans to peacefully assemble without violence. Both Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley of Oregon will be speaking before the committee in light of the ongoing conflict in Portland. Federal forces have been deployed to the city since early July and have clashed with protesters, as widespread video footage shows agents in unmarked cars making arrests without identifying themselves. Dozens of Portlanders have been shot, beaten, and gassed by these federal agents, yet violence in the city has subsided since these federal agents began withdrawing last week. At a recent hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, AG William Barr called the activity in Portland ‘an assault on the government of the United States’ and defended the use of force in the city.

The "right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances" isn't absolute - the courts have repeatedly ruled that the gov't can place time/manner restrictions. Additionally, it doesn't cover rioting and looting or violence.

How many people get killed by police? How many houses get invaded by mistake? How many people have been arrested for something that wasnt a crime, and had to pay bail, possibly lost their job,etc? So I don't know first hand if THEY support violence in practice (as opposed to revolutionary theory from centuries ago). I DO know plenty peaceful protesters and organizers, and they are NOT terrorists.
It's HELPFUL to not just blur it all up and lose all clarity and distinction. I admired the person who said, making an important distinction, look at the criminality" if you are law enforcement responding to a protest, not "the ideology." That's what the law supports. Beating, tear gassing or pepper spraying thousands for their supposed ideology is anti-American, anti-free speech, and unconstitutional.

Isn't it odd how someone (Pres. Trump) can refer to people as "terrorist organizations" and then for some, it becomes "fact?"
when 6,000 people are at a protest for 4-5 hours, and at the end of that protest about 10 people start throwing things, does that mean the other 5,990 also threw things? Because that is the reality in Portland. The TEN or so should be arrested. They are breaking the law.
