- This is a short video discussing the entanglement dangers that Flexible Ductwork presents to Firefighters. This material is being used more and more in both residential and commercial buildings and can pose a serious entrapment hazard to Firefighters.

I’d imagine you’d recommend carrying insulated tools?
In the UK we have pliers on our waist belt (attached to our BA set). To allow us to cut ourselves free from anything we may become entangled by.
Good reminder. We just had a training over this to remind everyone to carry something to self rescue. It was definitely a wake up call to some.
Interesting, ive never seen the stuff with an inner and outer layer with insulation in between. I work for my Captain's Flooring & Home Renovation Company so ive been learning a fair bit about building construction at work that i never got to see during my firefighter 1 training. (i.e. all the cob-job bullshit that is all to common in some homes around our area unfortunately)
I’ve encountered this myself in a few fires, it’s no joke. Trying to back out by sheer memory alone is terrifying. Never had to pull my cutters because I never went in deep enough once I realized what it was. Same to be said about that ceiling heat wires. Couldn’t imagine falling through a floor and getting tangled up in that stuff. I’d be calling maydays for days after that 😂. IF I made it out.

Me and a good friend of mine encountered some of this stuff in a house fire. Visibility was next to nothing. We felt some debris raining down on us but had no idea that kind of stuff had fallen on us until we were pretty well tangled up. My Channel Lock cutters like the one you have pictured (with the spanner wrench on it) worked well but wasn't as fast as my partners cable snips. I now carry both! That's the closest to calling a mayday I've been so far.
