Bismarck went down after fighting with the British, over 2200 on board, only 114 survived. Bismarck had previously sunk the British battlecruiser HMS Hood, 1418 men on Hood, 3 survived. to be fair, most large battleship sat that low when they were fully loaded, or at least close to it. you have to remember, they were carrying ammo, propellant, fuel, and crew and supplies, which all weighed a considerable amount. on the Iowa for example, they could carry up to 1200 rounds for their 16 in guns, coming in at an additional 2100 tons. the fuel, when fully loaded, would add another nearly ten thousand tons. most images that are shown of battleships are taken when they're empty, significantly increasing their buoyancy and lowering the waterline.
