Cold rainy January day. They are looking back because the cops just showed up on the roof and Paul and John are smiling because that is what Paul was hoping for. Cops to drag them away. They didn't. They never had to watch Ringo, and I doubt they could see him most of the performance. Ringo followed them, he watches their shoulders and legs (especially McCartney) when they "dance" to the beat. No monitors, these are the guys that innovated innovation in music.

Keep in mind,. they also recorded their first album IN ONE DAY. Most of their early albums took not much more than a day to record 2-3 songs and they usually wrote songs for the album in weeks.

Yes, like BMac said they were looking at the police, the amps were turned off but George turned his on again and they started playing once more. They spent years playing live with no return sound the size of the rooftop would not be a "problem".Like John used to say "I was born in Liverpool but grew up in Hamburg".

    Ringo is a metronome.
Paul is the one who pushed them all to do a live performance. He wanted it to be somewhere it was illegal.
I remember (yes I’m over 70) the outcry among the business managers who complained about the loud music coming into their offices and disrupting their businesses. They called the cops who took quite a while to get through the AppleCorp staff and eventually get access to the rooftop.

Hi. The Beatles did start their own record company, (Apple Records) but they didn't own their own recording studio as a band (I believe George had somewhat of a studio in his house, but it wasn't used to record the Beatles). They predominantly recorded at EMI recording studios (later named Abbey Road Studios), which is still in business, but they never owned that studio (although they were without a doubt, the premier act recording there). I subscribed.

Lennon's vocals and the harmonies are out of this world. Also when they released the singles with Billy Preston the ‘Get Back’ single was credited to “The Beatles with Billy Preston”, on the label as was its b-side, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’. It was unusual for a band to include a musician on the actual single label. also John Lennon was in favour of making Preston a full member of the Beatles.
If you want to see how incredibly tight and great they were live you have to look at the earlier concerts. No fold-back speakers, no auto-tune and screaming fans like this footage from australia where they couldn't hear each other - just a brilliant tight band ruclips.net/video/Wv8DDpteHUc/видео.html and this from Blackpool ruclips.net/video/YtwFESbL68w/видео.html
Ringo said because of the deafening screams, “I just had to just keep time. If I went to do a fill, it was like in silence, you know? So I would be watching Paul’s foot or John’s ass or, you know, ‘Where are we up to?’ … But you know, that’s how it ended up. And we made a conscious decision - we were becoming loose musicians - and so we decided, ‘We need to go in a studio and see what we’ve really got.’ And that’s what started that. And we got some great stuff.”
and yes - i hit the 'subscribe' button expecting to hear these two concerts in two of your videos :^)

Watching the film, " Get Back, " there is a point in the rooftop footage when one can sense they are, once again, THE BEATLES, and are enjoying playing live together. There is an energy during John's number that hearkens back to their Cavern days. George Harrison made a prescient remark, " The Beatles will exist without us. " Over fifty years later, that truth still holds.

It always sounded great because of being the Beatles!!! The greatest band, sometimes not recognised as great musicians!!! But that is exactly what they are! and multi instrument talented, great, great voices in John, Paul and George and Ringo could sing to..and the ultimate in songwriting and innovative and fast evolution of their songwriting through their time and, world leading. Everything that anyone could do in Rock music was almost entirely done by them first! and followed on by all the rest. Singing live here, totally, with no technology, no monitor speakers, which I don't think they ever had throughout their touring years or on the roof here!!!! No studio trickery at all, purely live and masterful playing by all four, with a tightness within the band which very, very few bands had. Again they achieved this by their many years of live performance also prior to their fame with 8 hours per night live performing in the German clubs of Hamburg in 1960/61/62. They were supremely tight as a live band and instantly in sync in every way with each other musically, even at this late stage in their career.

Is Jon a total idiot? None of the three Beatles stared at "the drummer" (Ringo Starr), and if Jon had any Beatles awareness at all he would know that Ringo watched the other 3 whenever there was lack of sound. I mean Ringo was behind them! And he has said many times that is how he knew how to play when they literally couldn’t hear each other in their many stadium tours that were drowned out by screaming. But you can see Ringo hears because he mouths the words before hitting the drums to move the song along.

I have lived in Sweden all my life and I was about 9 when Beatles become famous. I think Sweden was much more (or earlirr) influenced by UK music compared to the US. And Beatles influenced so much in music and cultural life over all, during the 60s and continued, and still does! Elvis might have been the first big "star", but compared with the Beatles it was nothing. Also there was a generation gap in those days which seems to maybe have started with the jazz, growing with Elvis and had its peak through Beatles-FlowerPower-Rock-Metal-Punk and seems like more and more disappearing since the 90s. But while the rest of the "ynger generation music" kept slightly isolated to young people, Beatles was well known and influenced also cross the generation border. At least this was my personal impression.

They don't ever look at Ringo!!!!! They all know instinctively where everyone is musically, and knowing what everyone is going to do! You need to research your Beatles history! sincerely you do. Billy Preston also was a very long time standing friend of the Beatles all the way back to '61 & '62! When the Beatles were in Hamburg and Billy was in Little Richards backing band at the time, when he was 16yrs old!!! The Beatles not only big friends with Richard but totally clicked with Preston and they looked after him in Hamburg socially and musically admired Billy and, the relationship started there, before the Beatles were famous. In their days of doing mamoth length time shows in Hamburg where in, 1960/61 and early '62 the Beatles performed, live, for 7/8 hours a night!! In Liverpool around this time they would do 45/60/90 mins shows & 2 hour shows, but Hamburg took the "biscuit" and they did mamoth stints on stage for the demands of the German club managers. They had the biggest repetoire of songs, they played far more than anyone else that was performing with them in Hamburg and Liverpool, 1959, 1960, 1961 & 1962. They didn't have anymore equipment than Drum kit, guitars and amps and mics and sometimes, as here, a piano, nothing else, no "fold back" speakers or mixing desks or any "trickery" as used in today's business. They don't have any more than that in this performance on the roof in London! In January 1969! They didn't have more than this in their big famous Beatlemania touring years of 1963 to 1966 for crying out loud!!! Appreciate the pure and raw musicianship and pure talent these guys had, more than any other around in their times and since for that matter.

Recording on somebody's dime? EMI made sure they were paid back heftily for the studio cost with sale of each Beatles recording. The Beatles hardly made a dime, percentage wise on their records, it's a good thing they sold well because EMI got most of the money!

Billy Preston is brilliant, this song would not have the same impact without him. They couldn't put him nearer to the band, as the roof was in danger of collapse. No auto-tune, no session players. Sheer talent, inspiration, and what my Country are experts in, just old fashioned "winging it"!!! One last thing, they all came from very very workingclass backgrounds. It may suprise you John, for all his "workingclass hero" image, came from quite a middle class background.

EJ here: Yes, they have the most incredible harmonies. Huge influence. I too cried when John Lennon died. I was young. like 9, but was very into the Beatles already due to my older brother's influences. Tragic. I wonder often what great songs and art he would have created if that never happened.

Imagine if there was as much resiliance in white homes toward black music as there seems to be towards 'white music' in black homes? every black guy reaction channel it's the same "we didn't have that in the house when I was growing up", the sad thing is that essentially the Beatles are a product of that very trade of heritage, they couldn't be who they were without that and showed it both musically and politically
