  • If you're just starting on your jump rope journey you might hear a lot of different opinions on how to proceed. And while we'll be the first to acknowledge that there's no one "right" way to go about learning, the method we present here has helped a lot of folks that we've coached over the past 10 years or so.
Full disclosure: about 15 years ago we shared a video with a similar title. It included a step-swing and catch (step # 3 at the time)-that we've since eliminated because it didn't seem to be all that helpful to the vast majority of trainees. That video had about 720,000 views, but we decided to unlist it because our coaching methodology has evolved and we only want to share what we consider to be the most helpful advice.
Our revised approach involves the following steps:
    1) With good posture and mechanics, jump without the rope.
    2) With good posture and mechanics, turn the rope to the side, first with your dominant arm and then with your non-dominant arm.
    3) With good posture and mechanics, turn the rope to the side and JUMP, first with your dominant arm and then with your non-dominant arm.
    4) Jump through the rope.
In this video, Shana demonstrates the 4 steps above in great detail, but of course you will undoubtedly have questions. Just jot them down in the comments section below and we'll do our best to get them as soon as possible. By the way, Shana is using one of our older 5mm PVC ropes (you can snag a rope at punkrope.com) and is sporting the new Punk Rope T-shirt.
Punk Rope was established in 2004 in New York City as an alternative fitness class that blends jump rope with creative calisthenics and fitness games.
