Thank you so much for this. I'm just starting out with Unreal Engine, and I wanted to make a reproduction of classic Doom's E1M1 map. But once I got into the Unreal Engine Editor, I realized it was not going to be as easy as I thought. This geometry tool demonstrated in this video is EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you so much.
The stuff in the beginning looks like what the Tomb Raider editor was capable of more than 20 years ago. I miss games that come with their own level editor.
Could you do a video on adding material to this as well? I'm curious on your approach. My first thoughts were along the lines of creating a layered material and painting it.
That's a great idea! This week-end I was searching exactly how to do it and found out a solution :) When in modeling mode, you can go to the "attributes" category and select the "MatEd" tool. Once it's enabled, you just have to select faces and assign a new material to them ;)
This reminds me so much of some old open source games I used to play when I was a kid. Assault Cube, Sauerbraten and a couple others. They used open source engines called Cube and Cube 2. You could edit levels in-game just like this. Those games are what got me into game development.
Hey thank you so much Patrick for this kind comment! It takes a lot of work to make tutorial videos, but reading these feedbacks makes me want to do more 😁 Thanks again and have a great day!
@@evansbohl hi i loved your totorial but need help im just getting started so it doesent say cube grid tool complete but rather cube grid tool accept / cancel if i press accept its the same as if i would press cancel . and then it says on the bottom right of the screen: cannot modyfiy built in engine asset please help
Great video! I find I'm quite slow when blocking out levels and I wasn't happy with other methods like the brush editing tool. This is a game changer for me. Thank you! Subbed.
@@boggledeggnoggler5472 i think you dont because the whole map becomes one object and it can only show you a rough idea and not do be used. What i have seen is, that you should probably just go into blender or whatever 3d modeling software you're using and graybox everything there. Because the software would make each object really as it's own object you could even change it around and make them in-scale. The only thing that you would have to do is to import it into unreal as an fbx and fix collisions, materials (because fbx dont really get them right)
What I'm wondering now is if there's a way to export the map to have as a reference in an actual modeling tool. It would be nice to be able to work directly off the greybox when the time came.
I didn't even come to your channel for this video, but I wanted to see more after that Mixamo video of yours and now I also have the solution to an issue I had with misaligned grids for the past few days solved. Merci!
Hi Mathijs! Thank you for taking the time to have a look at one of my other videos 😁 It's awesome to know that I can help with various aspects of Unreal Engine 😊
I was looking for something like that recently. I found paid addon for blender. It is grid modeller. Now only thing left is "first person view" version of this type of modeling. Basically Minecraft with little blocks mod or chisel mod with additional ability to "fillet" and "chamfer" edges. Probably esiest way it would be to make modification for minetest and add option to export modles as 3d objects
Really great tutorial! Straightforward, clear, and well organized. I look forward to learning more from you in your future tutorials as you grow your channel. You've gotten yourself a new subscriber :)
Hey Blitzing Eagle! Thank you so much for this awesome feedback 😁 Thanks also for subscribing to my channel! I hope that my future tutorials will be useful to you too 😊
Agreed! This is game changing for blocking out levels! I didn't talk about it in this tutorial, but you can also set specific materials per face 😊 Anyway, thanks Alexi for your feedback and have a great one!
@@BarakXYZ Yeah haha I thought it would be cool to show viewers that behind this serious face, there's a guy struggling with speaking english and trying hard not to forget what he's supposed to say xD
Can you use these meshes as a guide to replace with detailed game assets? Like have your Cube Grid mesh visible with 25% opacity, and line up your detailed meshes to that?
Thanks a lot Rhamadez! If you want to use it as a blockout tool, yes it's the right way since it's fast and straightforward :) But if you want to use it in a final game, I think you should at least check if the triangles of the mesh are well defined and not having weird shape. If so, then you can edit the triangles with the other geometry tools and you will be able to use them in production :D

8 days later, and I feel like I can do this blindfolded. Thank you for the tutorial. Do you think the grid + skin will work in a basic 2,5D FPS shooter with low end graphics? And what about the light? Lumen seems overkill for it. Thoughts? Thanks again.
I thought I knew all the basics of Unreal Engine until I watched this video. Never realized how powerful the modeling mode is.. it's not just powerful, but a real time-saver and incredibly handy. Thanks for the great tutorial!
For those looking for CubeGrid in 5.5 it's hidden in Create and not Model in Modeling Mode
