    I was more impressed by Portnoy's work ethic and commitment than his actual drumming talent. The dude put in a full day's work trying to figure this out. What a legend. He gave us all a great gift.

      Yes! I have to roll my eyes when I see comments about pro athletes, musicians etc... being born with talent. It's almost all work ethic. It's the hours of grind that builds the confidence so they can flow.

After that it is indeed as you and @jedward5155 say: lots of hard work, dedication, blood, sweat and maybe occasionally even tears. Talent, passion and drive just ensures that it never feels like a job.

      @@m.bird. Dude, I grew up playing competitive ice hockey. There are people who mostly cover it with talent. They're few and far between, but some people don't have to work that much at it. In sports, it might be a little easier because you're on a team, and you have to be at practice and play all the games, while musicians often don't have anyone telling them to do anything. Self-motivation is more important.

    For those that haven't seen the video yet, this is one of the GOAT drummers spending 5½ hours trying to learn one of the longest and most complex drum songs ever. He hiccups a few times in the first few mins but his sheer brilliance, reverance and humility shines through so much

      The black page is tougher than anything by tool but it doesn't jam. I can think of a couple rush songs that are pretty tough but again just not the same fluid motion of tool.

      It puts me in sort of a trance like sedation when I listen to them. Live or at home. Tool always takes me on a journey inside my mind to a place I didn’t know existed. Tool is like mushrooms every time you listen/eat them it always takes you on a different trip through your own subconsciousness.

    Probably my fave of all the Drumeo vids I've watched. Dude is awesome! Obviously. Funniest part was the texting with his son while figuring out the mathematical equation of even where to begin lol! Kudos Mike. You're a joy to watch man! 🍻✌️🤘🎶🤘

    I don't think there's very many people who could sit down in an afternoon and just figure out a working, great-sounding drum track for music this challenging.
    But he did it! This guy inspired me for many years, and I even started to learn the drums by buying his instructional DVD many years ago!
    If you want to learn drums, go find it because it's a phenomenal foundation if in-person lessons aren't really an option.
    Today, my wife and I own a music school, and I owe it to Mike for helping me find my way as a musician/screwed up high school kid back in the day.

    I keep coming back to the full video whenever I feel stuck with something I'm working on. It's so refreshing to see a master of his instrument work his ass off to get it. I find it quite inspirational. And this is coming from someone who isn't really into DT, nor Tool.

    Mike and Dream Theatre is what got me into drums in 97 at 41yrs old. Now Tool, BTBM, Larnel Lewis and Snarky Puppy is what i play everyday. Addiction is not always destructive🤗

      ​@@kinneyshoes1he absolutely struggled. There were many resets, you can hear and see them. He did a great job of adding his own style and fills to it. To say covered it is ridiculous, play the videos side by side and a blind person could tell the difference.

      @mapexzildjian6361 yea I hate to say this&it's nothing against an honest to goodness aspiring drummer on any scale of platform range but there'd just something about watching other guys dubbing my hero as far as the drums go..it never sits well with me because my drum heros aren't just ANY DRUMMER THEIR USUALLY THE APEX OF GREATNESS&THEN THERE IS DANNY ON THE TIPPY TOP..SO in affect it somewhat ABHORES ME.

    That gap in the drums is wonderfully placed. The guitar comes back in with the original riff, but much heavier. The drums being silent give the guitar its moment to burst through and do its thing. One of my favourite pauses in any song.

    Meet n greet ... got to jam on his kit... the guys understanding of pollyythmn and time changes is just elite...
    I tried playing push it...
    He said i was not bad... ill take that..
    Unbridled respect for him as a fellow drummer and as a man..
