The real reason a lot of these are breaking nowadays is because they're first cars and second chance cars. People either don't have the money or are just too lazy to take care of them and these are going into decline as a result. RCR'S video does a great job explaining it.
Mine currently has 194k and I bought it 2.5 years ago with 160k had almost all original parts on it ! It was an 04 tho which is one of the only first year models that didn’t have recall so I’m assuming that’s why it’s held up well. I’ve had some issues here and there but nothing crazy for a over 15 year old car, suspension stuff and an Alternator and small oil leak. Only time it over heated was from the Radiator blowing and I got a new one put in for pretty cheap 🤷🏻♀️ cheap insurance minor issues I know a lot of people have had lots of issues with em but I like mine
My ‘01 5 speed is currently at 207k, still running strong. Bought it a year ago at 194k. All I’ve done so far is some suspension work, a new radiator, thermostat, and a new radiator fan. It’s a fun car to drive if you keep it maintained!
I had an off-white PT-Cruiser Limited once. It saved my life when a semi rammed into me on the highway. It wasn't entirely reliable, but it's body was tough like a pickup's. I miss that car.
You mean to say "it had a tough body like a car." If it had the body of a traditional body-on-frame pickup truck, you'd probably be dead, because they're fairly unsafe in wrecks compared to a modern unibody passenger car like the PT Cruiser was.
I bought a 2003 PT Cruiser base model brand new. By 50K miles, it was blowing a quart or more between changes. Constant problems. I had it for ten years, though, and sold it to CarMax for scrap...Then, to make matters worse, bought a 2013 Ford Focus POS.
That's odd. My 2005 gt didn't us a drop. Ya gotta' understand, you roll the dice every time you purchase anything. Sometimes you win, sometimes ya loose.
When I bought my 2000 Ford Focus ZX3, I was debating on possibly buying the PT Cruiser instead. The Focus was a little cheaper so I bought it instead, and it was the most reliable car I have ever owned. And I thought later - like 2015 - oh thank god I bought the right one - gave it away and running fine at 260K miles. Sorry you're having troubles with your 2013. The parts are still cheap though, right?
I love how he points out stuff that happens to literally every car that was made at that time and even now. "Everything is plastic and cracks and fades" lmao
I had one for two years in college. A GT Turbo (which was plenty quick). Got me around and never had any issues. It was also unexpectedly good in the snow.
@Heywood Jablowme Well I was a college student trading in a Saturn Vue with a bad transmission. I didn't have a ton of options. I also wasn't obsessed with cars. I was busy getting laid and passing my classes. What was your 2nd car, oh wise one?
when these first came out, the radiator was mounted so low that parking slot bumps, curbs, and anything else taller than 4 inches would rip the bottom off the radiator. for a whole year, every pt i towed had a busted radiator. that was an indicator of the quality of the engineering that went into the rest of the car. wife and i were crazy wanting one, but that noped me right there.
23 years on my wife's PT. Never once scratched the bottom of the radiator. She did scrape the tiny 1"( air dam) once. Learned / never did it agian. If your driving a low profile car be it a PT, a BMW or Shelby you DON"T drive over curbs or you WILL damage the car. NOT a problem with the PT a problem with driver not knowing the basic of there car.
Most transverse, fwd cars are difficult to work on, in some way, but the Cruiser is among the worst. But a mechanic's frustration, working on these, is not a reason to put the car down.
I remember in the 70's I was told Broccoli caused cancer. Then months later it cured cancer. Next year it caused cancer and then it cured cancer again. This went on into the 80's. I call it brainwashing.
@@kclefthanded427 Why did Happy Days have Fonzi Jump the shark? :) haha I think kind of the same reason. Company was failing so they had nothing to lose so they engineered crap in response to get by. Been a long time for myself as well.
Customer wanders back, "Hey Scotty, who were you talking to there?" "Me? No one...." "I thought I heard voices is all" "Aah, mustve been the radio in the car" "Oh! You fixed the radio too!!!" "No. $5000 please."
Had the exact same thought!... Figured I should check here first before I wrote my own, since I knew I couldn't be the only one! The most perfect part was when he says, you'd have to be outta your mind to buy one of these!
Remember the Renault Alliance was Motor Trend's Car of the Year back in the early 1980's. Have you seen any of those lately. I do not think any survived. Car magazines are not very reliable.
@@MiGujack3 That's about most of the money you saved on fuel going towards paying for battery and generator replacements. If you must have a hybrid lease a new one or be the first owner and sell it after 5 to 6 years to avoid the endless money pit zone.
I remember when I was a teenager they had waiting lists for these when they came out. I don't remember the last time I've seen one on the road today and I live in a pretty big city.
A lot of these suffered from inexpensive car syndrome. As in, cheap cars tend to attract idiots who don't maintain them. Not the best cars out there, but I see a lot of them on the road still.
a guy from my moms church bought one and he drove it like he stole it. i heard his son talking about how his dad hated that it didnt have enough power to run red lights so he bought the turbo
I remembered the first time that I had to drive behind one for the first time. The driver was so slow. I thought to myself, well they really have recreated the experience of driving behind a 1934 Chrysler.
Had more than a few of them as rental cars back when they were new. Had three different ones in one trip breakdown on me, for different reasons. Rental company just kept towing them away and giving me another one.
"That just turbocharges the head gasket blowing faster" =P I actually still see a few of these around. Turbo and regular. I don't like them personally, but some people just can't get enough of a crappy Chrysler with a faux classic body.
Drove a 2002 PT Cruiser, standard transmission, for 10 years, 225k miles. The overheating issue was absolutely the worst thing about it. It was the single biggest issue I had when it came to repairs. Yes everything was covered in plastic; I didn't have a big problem with that except the the dash cracking under the Colorado sun. By the time I traded it in it had some serious problems, but I did love that car.
@@vitamulten1395 agreed, the chevette deserves a dishonorable mention. Grandma had one, it sucked at everything, especially acceleration. For extra braking, you could flip on the AC ! Plus, they had a sort of bland uglyness of something cobbled together hastily, and was just a cheap piece of crap.
VITAMULTEN I loved my “shove-it”, lol! Almost died in one...slid out of control down a hill sideways so fast that all 4 tires were split down the middle and bounced off a telephone pole ending up in a ditch. Car started the next morning too.
I don’t understand why Scotty hates this car because I have owned a 2005 Pt Cruiser for 17 years, and I LOVE IT. I have meticulously maintained it per the factory service manual and experienced virtually no problems in 17 years. I absolutely cannot say the same for my three other cars, all Mercedes purchased brand new. Also, it is fun to drive, has plenty of storage space, and accommodates my 6’2” frame extremely comfortably.
Had one since 2001. Fits my 6'2" with room to spare and more important gives my 4'11" wife a commanding view she gets in NO other car. Eventually it will wear out, but so far don't see that happening anytime soon.
I had a 2003 basic model. Had it for 9 years. 100k miles. 8yrs in HOT Phoenix, AZ. Drove it as fast as 105mph on I-5 when my job moved me to Oregon for a year. Loaded to the ceiling with my stuff. Never left me stranded but one time after 7 years. The battery finally gave out... 7 friggin years in Phoenix heat. Things replaced on it? Motor mounts Battery Door switch Tires Brakes Rear hatch lift supports Sold it to my brother who added another 100k. My niece still drives it.
Started watching about 10 months ago - I'm hooked! Got a guy at work hooked on Scotty, too. He said he was looking at buying a new Ram pickup and Scotty totally talked him out of it! [Insert laughing animal meme]
I have a PT Cruiser and I've done some Modifications on it, the Exhaust is dual, I put on JBA cat 4 headers, and Magnaflow mufflers . I put larger tires on. It gets 32 mpg with-out the spare tire. It really moves now ! ..loudly ! I really, really love it now !
Please tell me how you put a dual exhaust on an inline four cylinder. And then explain where you bolted up the other header (you said "headerS," as in "pair.") Please, we're all listening and would love to hear of this magical inline four with a second bank of cylinders. Or, did you mean to say you put a header on your single exhaust with two outlet pipes? Because that's not a dual exhaust.
@@beaub9766 You are full of crap. 85% of Canadians are "very satisfied" with their health care. @@men2dewy yeah made in Japan is usually a good thing but what Scotty said made sense: they used the smallest cheapest compressors they possibly could and thats why they failed. A tiny little compressor is fine if you live in the far north like I do and it barely sees any use...but the US auto market has a huge amount of customers in CA, TX, FL, AL, GA, etc. No matter how well made the A/C compressor was if it was too small for the job (like months of 90-100 degree days) it was gonna fail early.
I bought my 2007 model in 2010 with 75000 kms. It now has 208000 kms and I’ve always regularly serviced and only lately starting to have a few nightly issues. I’ve always loved it and the biggest things I’ve done on it is to replace radiator and clock spring. I think I’ve done well! 👍

I gave up on US brands for Toyota and Honda 15 years ago. Never looked back.

The PT cruiser has a turning radius of a motor home
Probs why they classified it as a truck...
That was one of my grips with the cruiser.
when these first came out, the radiator was mounted so low that parking slot bumps, curbs, and anything else taller than 4 inches would rip the bottom off the radiator. for a whole year, every pt i towed had a busted radiator. that was an indicator of the quality of the engineering that went into the rest of the car. wife and i were crazy wanting one, but that noped me right there.
I've worked on enough of them and I hated everyone of them.
Most transverse, fwd cars are difficult to work on, in some way, but the Cruiser is among the worst. But a mechanic's frustration, working on these, is not a reason to put the car down.

Drove a 2002 PT Cruiser, standard transmission, for 10 years, 225k miles. The overheating issue was absolutely the worst thing about it. It was the single biggest issue I had when it came to repairs. @@vitamulten1395 agreed, the chevette deserves a dishonorable mention. Grandma had one, it sucked at everything, especially acceleration. For extra braking, you could flip on the AC !
