  • On this episode of Tonal Teamwork we once again try to think out of the sonic box. This time (after being inspired by the mighty Zane Carney) we stack the Electro-Harmonix Pitch Fork and the EarthQuaker Devices Organizer V2 for massive stacked synth sounds. Pair that with the EarthQuaker Devices Dispatch Master and Pyramids and you'll be in ambient synth heaven in no time.

    I've been running octavers in other octavers and pitch shifters a lot, recently. It just seemed like the logical step for me to create a huge sound, because there's no guitar in my current musical project - just bass. :D

    great timing! I was just messing around with this ealier this week.A bonus- try putting a pitch shifting pedal after the pitch shifter and octaver. The set up I tried was a Boss PS2 ( added bonus of the weird feedback knob)>foxrox octron> digitech whammy> into delay/modulation (and try a ring mod!) ... great video as always... yr always so generous with your ideas.

      I just returned my TC Electronic Vortex Flanger today and ordered the Earthquaker Devices Pyramids he has there. Usually I love TC Electronics stuff: Shaker Vibrato, Sub n' Up Octaver, Flashback X4 (kind of wish I would've gotten the Triple Flashback instead though), Ditto looper, Pipeline tremolo, Corona Chorus, Hall of Fame 2 Reverb and Polytune. I love their pedals but that Vortex just couldn't be set to subtle, it was harsh. When TC Electronic doesn't do it for me, I always go with Earthquaker Devices or Walrus Audio, I've found them to be pretty much top of the line when it comes to tone and versatility.

    If you really want an experience, pick up a couple Lexicon PCM 81 rack units and a Rocktron Intellefex Harmonizer rack. Run these three racks stereo in the FX loops of a couple different amps. You will never leave your room again. The crazy things you can do with racks like these and the ways you can bend soundscapes is just mind blowing. If you are not used to using rack-based effects though, you will need to learn about insulating the racks from the rack mounts to prevent ground looping problems getting into your signal. But, once you get all that figured out, You can have harmonizer settings on all three racks, or set one Lexicon rack to a true rotery doppler effect while harmonized, or just about anything your mind can dream up. Or, if you really have money to toss at your gear habit, add in a Fractal Audio Axe FX 3 in the mix for good measure.

    A third thought for the trifecta, guitar pedals are basically cheap analogue synth modules!

    You said the Dispatch Master is a favorite? I was about to buy the Afterneath pedal... Would you get the Dispatch Master over the Afterneath pedal? I already have a Hall of Fame 2 Reverb and a Flashback X4 Delay. Also regarding your crazy ideas here, I have a Sub 'n' Up (1 octave above, and 2 below), Whammy V and I ordered the Pyramids Flanger you have there, I'm just waiting for it to be delivered. I was using a Vortex Flanger but I wasn't particularly impressed by it so I took it back and ordered the Pyramids. I'm also ordering a TC Electronic Brainwaves if I can ever find one in stock and a Quintessence. I have the Walrus Audio Lillian Phaser too, some people love it and some people hate it but I find it quite usable.

    what would happen if you put some sort of crazy sound destroying fuzz (Death by Audio or JPTR FX stuff) at the very end of the chain? or at least after pitch shifter and octaver and before delay and flanger?

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 лет назад

      It would sound like a crazy sound destroying fuzz destroying the signal ☺ For the most musical result, I would recommend placing the fuzz earlier in the chain. But if you're going for a blown up, textural lo-fi sound, then placing a fuzz last in the chain can create some spectacular results.

    What's the difference between an octaver and pitch shifter? Is it just that a PS has more intervals to choose from?

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 лет назад +2

      Octavers can only do straight octaves up and/or down. Pitch-shifters can do all kinds of intervals in between. The Pitch Fork can for instance handle stuff like minor second, perfect fourth, perfect fifth (like I use in the video), minor third etc etc etc.

    • @alekstedstone9634
      @alekstedstone9634 6 лет назад +4

      Additionally, a lot of pitch shifters (Like the Pitch Fork and the Digitech Whammy) do octaves as well - this is typically achieved digitally via sampling, which will largely preserve the qualities of the input signal but may introduce artefacts. Some octave pedals will employ tricks like half wave rectification to generate an octave up, and this can colour your sound quite dramatically (eg. octave fuzzes), and others completely re-synthesise your signal and tend to have a monophonic output as a consequence.

    Have meet a pedal you didn't like?

      Of course I have encountered pedals I didn't enjoy. But that doesn't mean they were bad pedals. Just means they weren't for me, my sound and my context ☺

    A delay inbetween the harmonizer and octaver might be cool for a slightly delayed attack on the octave stuff, if possible, though I guess you'd need something with a dry-wet separation and something to mix it back in...

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  6 лет назад +1

      I think a delay pedal would potentially mess with the tracking of the octaver, but it's always worth a try. Luckily the EQD Organizer has a lag knob, which can adjust the pre-delay on the octaves, so it can go from instant and super fast tracking, to lagging way behind like old-school analog octavers sometimes tend to do ☺

      Probably wouldn't if you have 100% wet, something like this but with the octaver instead ruclips.net/video/pQJOgmUKW1g/видео.htmlm5s

    I’m trying to replicate Kanye West’s “Hold My Liquor”, do you think these pedals could get me there? I have a Holy Grail Reverb on hand.

      Too much fun will kill you. Hey...that reminds me of a song.
      I want my Pitchfork back! I have so many other harmoniser/octave/modulation etc pedals but that was a mistake, selling that one. The TC Quintessence doesn't do the whammy thing. MASH function provides *limited* pitch shifting in real time.

    Doesn’t the Hedra do this on its own?

    • @thepedalzone
      @thepedalzone  3 года назад

      It's not totally the same. Hedra does allow you to run several pitch voices at the same with different intervals, but it runs its 3 voices in parallel. In this example we're stacking pitch-shifter, feeding the 5th into the octaves. It just produces a different sound, since the 5th is getting pitch-shifted up and down as well by the octaver.
