    This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things ruclips.net/user/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

It’s hot if you have a good heat source. I love how this guy just showed us what you need for a sauna - the basics, which didn’t cost $12,000, I’m sure 👌.

      @Juho When you are showing a video of how you made something on RUclips, you can assume others will look it up as a guide to follow. He built his walls with allthread... I love the video, and love how he illustrates that you can get away with a super simple structure... but since this is the first thing I saw on Google after looking up how to make your own sauna, it's a good thing people mention in comments that those looking to build their own should look for instructions elsewhere. Cool video, don't do what he did, it's a poorly built structure. TBH I'm impressed a guy who uses his phone as a level and a drill bit as a jigsaw pulled this off, I genuinely enjoyed it, but the critical comments serve as a disclaimer IMHO.

      @stuntcock01 3 года назад +19

      @@matthewkeyes4639you're right in that he didn't use the best materials for the job, but we dont know... maybe this was a cheap case study in "can I build a sauna" before he went out and spent thousands and thousands of dollars on 4x4 red cedar posts. as for the structure... this exact building method is used by Finnish sauna builders. there is no need for insulation when you are using solid walls like this, and even most cedar barrel saunas which use T&G panel don't have insulation or vapour barrier ; A sauna is only meant to be hot while you are in it. the structure itself doesnt need to retain heat, only the rocks in the stove. the only disadvantage to using knotty wood is that it heats up unevenly and its uncomfortable to touch. a knot on the wall isn't a big deal... a knot on the bench will hurt. . the wood may or may not rot. there is a Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban which he did (scorching the wood) which serves as a form of weatherproofing. only thing I would do differently is not use glue. the tension from the threaded rod is enough to compress the beams.
      I agree with you that this may not be the best LONG TERM application, but it works. as with anything, do your own research. that is common sense.

    Due to my own inexperience with saunas, I have so many questions. Like:
    1. Why the solid lumber walls? Why not standard framing and T1-11?
    2. Why the flat roof? Seems likely to leak.
    3. Why have the gaps between lumber in the walls? Is fresh air infiltration through them desirable?

    • @Unboxingexperience7
      @Unboxingexperience7  4 года назад +1

      1./2. to keep it simple
      3. you only need some air ventilation for the stove. Gaps are not desirable, but the stove is kind of overkill for such a small sauna so I didn't bother. However,I closed the large gaps on the floor except of a gap close to the stove.

    I'm not criticizing - but I am curious about a couple of things.
    1) Why did you use all thread instead of building regular walls? It seems to me that the method you used would be more time consuming. You saved a little bit of money on lumber, but not much when you add in the cost of the all thread.
    2) Why not add some bracing under that bench? Even some 2x4 pieces screwed to the wall along the sides and back to rest the bench on would have made it a lot stronger.
    3) Why did you choose to use wood heat instead of gas or propane? It seems to me that building a fire in advance of when you want to use it would be kind of a pain.
    Like I said, I'm not criticizing. I want to build a sauna, but I'm not much of a carpenter. I am wondering what advantages you see to doing it this way.

    • @Unboxingexperience7
      @Unboxingexperience7  4 года назад

      1) the thread rod costs only 5 bucks, it's inside the wall and simple to align
      2) The bench rests on braces on the side and on the back. That's enough, it works and bends just slightly.
      3) the classic Finnish sauna is wood fired, it gives a more pleasant heat, there is no need for a 3 phase power connection, I don't think that there are any gas/propane sauna stoves

    • @timpatrickhanna
      @timpatrickhanna 4 года назад

      Oh, there are plenty of sauna heaters that run on gas or propane. www.saunaplace.com/store/scandia-ultra-gas-sauna-heater-model-240.html -- that's just one example. You can buy them on Amazon. For an electrical heat you just need 240 volts, no need for three phase service. I used to heat my whole house with electric forced air heat - in northwestern Pennsylvania winters. I was looking at a 6kW sauna heater earlier today. It runs on 240V single phase and has a nominal current draw of 25 amps. That's about what an electric clothes dryer uses.
      I'm curious where you bought the all thread for $5 - pieces like that around here are significantly more expensive. I've found 6 foot galvanized steel all thread, 3/8" diameter, for about $5 each, but you have to buy at least 25 for that amount.
      Are you having any trouble with water pooling between the horizontal pieces of timber you used for the walls? Do you notice any difference with not having insulation?

  • @STTLLC
    @STTLLC 4 года назад +6

    This was a damn interesting approach! Threaded rod to keep the boards in line than bolt them down. If though the stove is exhausting, I'm thinking some soot might escape and being that your in a very confined area. This may be bad over the years.
