    Clear handled screwdrivers are made from cellulose acetate butyrate for their electrical insulator properties. The chalky white residue are plasticizers decomposing and the vomit smell is butyric acid off gassing. Options are : return for exchange if Craftsman or lifetime warranty brand , clean with chemicals, buff and coat with polyurethane to contain stink , cut off stinky handle and replace with new one or simply throw it away . There is no guarantee if cleaned and coated that it will not continue to decompose .

      that lifetime warranty is subjective
      i had tools from a sears craftsman set and tried a warranty exchange at lowes they said it was sears craftsman and to try them sears closed tried craftsman online wanted a receipt from 1985... easier to shoplift a replacement

    I collect Xcelite tools, and what I always end up doing is washing them in the sink with regular bar soap after scraping off the majority of the white crust. I also keep them in a sunny window, which seems to keep the mange away. Using the tools also seems to keep it away. I just accept the slight (but hardly noticeable) smell as part of the enjoyment of my tools.

      So far there is no known long term cure for mange. When those handles were cast they were made defectively. So what's going on is irreversible. Because not every handle gets mangy. Only some suffer from the affliction.

      As best as we can tell mange is due to a faulty chemical process when the handle was manufactured. Once a handle goes mangy that's it. You can only manage it then. There is no cure. It's actually a manufacturing defect. The permanent solution is to get rid of the handle. Which a lot of people do. They just throw the tools away.

    • @357magdad
      @357magdad  2 месяца назад +1

      @1pcfred 2 месяца назад

      @@357magdad I know you're trying and you've got hopes but I'm not sure if there is a solution. Handles that get mangy are simply defective. Because it doesn't happen to all of them. I have handles that are decades old and they've never gotten the pox. Then there's the troublesome ones.

      That spray he used is not the most durable product available. With a better clear coat he may achieve better results? I'd recommend using Helmsman spar varnish. I've had excellent results using that on tools. It costs more but it's worth it. Helmsman is far more durable. It's tough stuff.

    Have you considered this technique, which I have seen used to restore yellowed plastic parts? The plastic is immersed in hydrogen peroxide in a clear basin, strips of LED lights are taped around the outside of the basin, and the plastic sits overnight in the illuminated peroxide. The plastic comes out de-yellowed and looks factory-fresh

Like epoxy if you add too much resin the mix won’t dry as fast or possibly be tacky- Western Forge was notorious for shoddy workmanship and many of their products would be considered factory seconds in any other company. 😂. I would try a UVC light . They say it could be mold that is eating it. Next summer I will look for one in a garage sale and clean it and then treat it with UVC light for an hour. I have a box made and it works on the smell of old books . The screwdrivers I have never had a bad case of decomposing handles. Any screw drivers I cleaned up hang on the wall. I never had a problem with it.

      If you leave tools out in the fresh air that seems to impede the growth of mange. It isn't a cure but it slows it. Mange likes it dark, hot and humid. It's an organism. It's some kind of bacterial feeding on the cellulose. A couple have been identified so far. I've heard it doesn't exist on the continent of Australia. At least not yet. We've got it bad in America though.

    Steel wool looks the best

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 2 месяца назад +1

      That's how I clean mange. I use a cleaner and steel wool. The cleaner seems to kill the stuff and the steel wool gets it off. But then it always comes back. As best as anyone knows the plastic wasn't catalyzed correctly when it was made. So handles that get mangy are just susceptible to the bacteria that causes it. Because it doesn't happen to all the handles.

    I don't think there is any tool challenge Magdad won't tackle. Those screwdriver handles look so good after the cleanup that they deserve to stay that way. My average guy- type of solution would be to clean the handles up, then seal them with clear epoxy or clear plastic spray to tame the mange.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 2 месяца назад

      We'll see after next mange season. Mange likes heat and humidity. So it's most active in the summer. But apparently you can cook it with too much heat. It is a living bacteria.

    I like your humor, but your fixes will not get rid of it. The problem is that the degradation of cellulose acetate and its related plastics is auto catalytic. The smell is from butyric acid. Any acetic or butyric acid left behind will cause more mange. Coating it will only seal it in. I would suggest the ammonia followed by heat in cycles until the smell goes away.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 2 месяца назад

      Yeah but there's actually a bacteria that's eating the plastic. There's no known cure. It isn't all handles either. Some just weren't catalyzed right when they were made. They're defective. So far no one's discovered how to fix that. It may not even be possible. There's a lot of info on the net about it. Some legitimate science has been done.
