At Boeing you have to have an ABET accredited engineering degree to do design work. From Mike's previous comments it sounds like he's self taught. I could be wrong. And like someone else said, he'd be bored to tears. The slices of the design pie there are paper thin, at least early in your career. The brilliant gray beards can make a difference.

    • @MrGaryGG48
      @MrGaryGG48 3 года назад +3

While I'm aware that I may misunderstand Mike's motivation... I've watched the background info since the first of his Draco videos and it seems that he did gain his skills by "side-stepping" the conventional engineering school path. As fast as he blasts through what he's doing in these build-videos, I doubt that he really had the patience to complete all the associated curriculum to get a typical engineering degree. I think he picked what he needed to gain the pertinent skills and went "Back to Work!"
That attitude and background probably wouldn't blend with the engineering environment I lived with. Many (if not most) of the engineering firms are rather staid and conservative in the way they run their businesses. I don't see that in Mike or Mark. They seem to "read the problem and cut to the chase... and get back to work!" ;^)

Floats! would be cool! I can see it now, a set of sponsons off a unlimited drag hydro sounds about right.
I still love seeing Draco backing into the hanger and knowing the plane it has a backup camera, how cool is that?
On howelloween I was talking to some kids that were dressed up as superheroes and one of them asked me who I would be. I said Mike Patey, he asked me what powers does he have? I told him he has the very best toys you could have. They looked at me for a minute and started arguing over who get to be Mike Patey next year. My daughter and I laughed so hard, she said you just ain't happy unless you are causing trouble.

Ive helped with search and rescue for most of my life. We’re very rural Alaska. It’s Always so comforting knowing we have pilots helping us look from the air! bsar has been searching for 7 missing people. Sadly all 7 still missing.. us coast guard have called off search. As soon as the ice is thick enough everyone locally will be back out lookin for them again!

This beautiful yet amazing piece of art is coming along so well! I enjoy watching all of it and looking forward to seeing scrappy done.
I’m waiting for you to let us know what your doing to get more power out of Scrappy’s engine I want to find out if the guess I made on a previous video was right.
Seeing that you’ve purchased two PZL-104 Wilga’s, I have been getting very excited and somewhat impatient about seeing the new Draco rebuild. I am so curious as to how it will turn out and what changes you will end up making as well as any new features you plan on adding.
Keep up the great work and as well as the wonderful videos. Have a Happy Thanksgiving and a very Merry Christmas. 🛩🇺🇸

Great to see Mark! Glad to see he's working on his, airplane once again. I had several questions that you answered; Here's one you didn't. I know,I'm not the only one that's interested here. Q: Can you show us the wings, even if it's on the computer? WE THE PEOPLE ARE CHOMPING AT THE BIT! Love the content here. Back to work!!

I stumbled on your videos awhile back and thought they were interesting, I'm not a pilot of any kind, just an ordinary guy, But I'm very much enjoying the videos and the build of scrappy, I'm anxious to see it finally fly..
I have flown on commercial airlines many times, but your Planes are much much different, they remind me of the Coyote in Roadrunner strapping himself to a rocket.. That, I think is Cool..
I love the fact you never stop thinking about making things better in Every way, Not just for, But Everyone. Safety. Saving lives.
    You're Awesome dude. Thanks

Tell me more about the yaw damper. I'm in the middle of a bearhawk and just added the 3rd servo on the firewall and have cables down to the rudder pedals. Specifically, do you think the garmin servo with it's 60in/lbs of torque is enough to damp a tail that large? Are you planning on designing the wing to try and limit adverse yaw?

Lying in bed at night, it’s building engines. Every type from every manufacturer. It’s performance, efficiency, speed, rpm range and tuning. Whenever something breaks you tear it down, figure out what failed and fix it. When I was selling Auto Parts it would be how to educate the customer, what’s his or her level of education in mechanics, what personality type they have and it’s traits and figuring out the best approach. Once that’s done and the customer understands their mistake, if it was theirs up you won’t see them again, until they are ready to build their next engine. In my last job it was more about how the parts were engineered and educating the customer on how to use it. I worked for Federal Mogul who owned TRW and Sealed Power, Fel Pro, Bower BCA and National Oil Seals. I worked the 1-800 technical assistance hotline, and some of my customers included the shops owned by Jack Roush, Bob Glidden, Richard Petty, Ross Pistons and many more big names in the Racing world. Too much fun and yet, the pay was so bad than in all except my last job I could afford anything besides just living. When I g9t to Federal Mogul I finally had some extra cash coming in and I was looking very seriously at getting my Pilot’s Certificate and building an airplane of my own, using what I had learned when I was building engines to build my own adapted Auto Engine for the plane. But they closed their doors on the Phoenix operation just a short 18 months after I was hired. Time to start over? Not with two kids going to college. So lying in bed at night.... my mind doesn’t stop. Even after becoming disabled!
Oh, and I’ve never been to Oshkosh. Any chance you can refuel at Mesa Gateway airport so I can hitch a ride? (It’s a bucket list thing!
By the way, 5 screens in Scrappy? Well I wanted to put a screen that’s viewable for every body that’s flying with me, with a camera showing the pilots view. That way everybody can see what the pilot sees. Then give them the choice of seeing that,or a movie, or surf the internet during the trip! But that’s on my passenger plane dream. I also thought of doing all the cameras you put on scrappy, especially at the tail! Id want the same thing on my Bush plane dream! But I love what you’ve done on Scrappy!

Love it. No plane on the planet will come close to how well built scrappy is. You cant beat self built. It's a pilots plane.. all the bells and whistles.
Congrats Mike! Just a thought...When your done with Scrappy. You should do a budget build of a kitfox or J-A. step by step. Use an auto conversion power plant like a Viking engine. Low cost with decent reliable performance for half the cost of a rotax. ...2 screen set up ( Garmin + ipad ) The only thing you should do custom is a suspension. Something that could be replicated or sold by you lol.. Scrappy is amazing.

Mike, I haven’t found your explanation of the flex hoses to the main gear suspension struts. My best guess is that you have a single ground/flight adjustable regulator valve, with a smaller high pressure nitrogen bottle tucked away “somewhere?” to adjust for different landing surface conditions. Am I even close on this? I love your whole approach to all that you do, whether it’s aeronautical, family, or other areas of our humanity while we are here on this earth. I even had to buy an RC model airplane to get myself “back into the sky.” And now the RC club wants me to give them a presentation about my 7 years working on the 1st and 2nd stages of the Saturn V rocket!

This is great, but in the beginning you talked about the different philosophies behind your two different airplanes. We know about Scrappy but I'd like to know more about Marks airplane design. My memory is that it was more on the light side where Scrappy is on the monster truck side. Maybe a video comparing and contrasting the two designs?

I honestly look up to you so much, I hope one day I can be a shop assistant for you so I can learn and perhaps one day build my own aircraft. For SAR, think about adding a sensor ball to add to your visual scan. Multiple balls and additional bandwidth give an option to have a virtual scanner/observer crew along. Safe flying.

Love watching you guys work and the Q&A was fantastic and what was even more satisfying to me was I actually answered the question on rear travel at landing @13 inches before you did it so I was really paying attention and the 21 on the front I can’t believe I remember that but anyway I never have flown a plane in my life but after watching you I think I can at 63 yrs old I want to get my pilot license go figure I’ve driven everything else it seems so
    why not thanx Mike 💪
