it's quite rare these days to see somebody teaching stuff like this pro bono.... everybody wants you to be some kind of a proclub member or something... not a bad thing you know, it's business, i can understand that... but still, receiveng such info for free directly from the source makes me belive once again that there are good people out there.... Thank you Ian!
cristian george Samoila - it’s an absolute pleasure! I believe that there’s no reason that photographers should keep ‘secrets’ but believe that it’s good to share what I’ve learned so that other people can learn too. I make my money by shooting products for clients so have no need to charge for sharing and enjoy giving anyone who’s interested the tools to develop their skills of they wish!👍🏻 Thanks again for you kind comments!
Thanks! I made my cone using plastic water pipe bent into a circle with a push-fit connector to hold the loop together. Then a sheet of Transom diffusion material cut to make the cone
Hi! It depends on the angle really - we'd tend to shoot other angles using a large diffuser close-in and over the watch to light it and use bounce cards to fill any darker areas. Hope this helps!
@@IanKnaggsPhotography thanks for the reply but like how would u place the watch. My problem is just how do I place the watch. But your video helped with the lighting well. Thanks a lot !
@@lightworkx4651 - Again it depends on the composition. They could either be laid flat, held with wire or using a clear plastic watch display clip (which needs careful placement to reduce excessive retouching to remove it.
Really useful info - thanks! One quick question if I may - your shooting cone - I've made one from some medium weight savage translum which works well but it's a bit flimsy around the base. It needs a bit more integrity to hold a circular shape for gradients. You mentioned in your video that you use a plastic hoop - can I ask what you used? Thanks!
Chris Parry - hello & many thanks! I bought it a few years ago before there were different weights to chose from!🙈 If I was going to get some now i think I’d go to tetenaluk.com and probably go for the heavyweight version - it should produce smoother gradients but may need a little more light behind it. Hope all’s well with you!
Ian Knaggs Photography cheers for the reply Ian, I'm good thanks. I've seen the Tetenal stuff before but was hoping you had sourced something a bit cheaper lol. I'll keep looking as I don't need a full roll, just enough to make a few diffusers.
Chris Parry - I know what you mean! However, I paid £80 for my roll a few years ago and I’ve still got half left! To be honest it’s quite useful as a background or shooting surface too!
Really great up to the last point! I hope you don't mind me saying, the light fall off on the bottom where the shadow is, looks unnatural due to the fact you have a highlight directly where the shadow is! Other than that, amazing work :) I love the black foam core, it adds a lovely touch.
Thank you for sharing this expérience. I have just discovered your channel ! I hope to learn more soon. Nice video but the sound ... is poor. Waiting for the next product shooting 👍
Dario Venturini - Hello! Yes, I made the cone myself... it’s just a hoop of plastic pipe for the wide end a the cone is cut from Translum. It took about 30 minutes to make and is useful for shooting lots of things!👍🏻
ehab ezat - apologies, the sounds not the best in places as I was moving around and he levels are a little low but it should all be audible with the volume turned up a bit!👍🏻
im using 2.1 audio system and not loud enough unless its 90% volume which introduces a lot of artifacts . i think a 20-40$ lav mic will be a good investment for future videos . gained i new sub by the way ;)

thanks again, Ian!
How can one go this length for a picture, and ignore everything regarding sound?
I'm a retoucher, just watched this for my pleasure but it was excellent information. Really made me want to shoot still-life
very helpful video man. I am also a editor by photoshop.

Elias Ali - It’s a pleasure and we hope you found it useful!
this is great..subscribed!
hey. how would you do other angles of the same product?? like the side angle?
Hi! It depends on the angle really - we'd tend to shoot other angles using a large diffuser close-in and over the watch to light it and use bounce cards to fill any darker areas. Hope this helps!

Really helpfull, the post production loses me at the moment. The lighting advice and playing around with it is very informative. Cheers
Hi Ian, it's cone made by yourself, or ? thank you
