I've always rated Topper as the best punk drummer ever.. he had the advantage as he could already drum pretty damn well before the punk scene emerged in the mid 70's, whilst all the young souls were just learning how to hold the sticks
I’m 56 now , massive clash fan in my late teens , Not until I listened to the songs later in life , I’ve come to appreciate toppers drumming , excellent drummer In my youth it was more about joe and the lyrics
Topper never lost his groove! He was The Clash end of! Imaginative drum patterns, soul, swing, punk, rock and reggae that's what Topper injected into The Clash!
Sandy Pearlman said Topper was the best drummer on the planet. Thats good enough for me. "a drumming machine..." is how he described Topper. Strummer is quoted as saying the day Topper joined the band was when they went to a completely new level. Not wrong.
This highlights just how good Topper is. You could through any shit guitar playing on top of his drums and it would still sound fucking brilliant! He’d even make my guitar playing sound great!
I know this is ancient, but I'm just hearing it. He sounds ridiculously larger than life. I've seen lots of big stars in little clubs, but he sounds like he should still be a huge rock star.
I remenber meeting the Clash after a gig at the Bridlington Spa in 1980 on the London Calling tour and Topper and Paul were so cool, as a 14 year old who'd thumbed it from Yoek that was one of my all time best memories. It's great to see that Topper has overcome all his demons and that he's playing again. One of the greats, keep on drumming. From a fan, take care, stay safe and stay free.
It was messed up having terry chimes in the rock the casbah video when topper played the majority of the instruments on that song. They could have at least let him do the video before firing him
It wasnt really possible ..as after Joe 'ran off..& came back' they then sacked Topper & then did the rearranged 'kasbah Club' tour with Terry Chimes ..to have asked Topper back ' to do a video' would have resulted in more questions ..and possibly Terry Chimes ( who WAS the 1st proper drummer in the band) thinking 'so I'm not part of the band?'
Topper Headon LEGEND! My favourite drummer. When I listen to The Clash I always listen more intently to his stick n kick work, it's so precise, yet has a loose feel, technically outstanding but with such touch and imagination. For me Topper is the TOP drummer.
absolutely one of THE best and influential drummers in rock n roll history...what id give to see him in a small pub gig...topper...australias burning...come down
The were simply a magical live band never another gig always an event of magnitude they deserve their place in the hall of fame. Toppers timing was impeccable kept them tight and in complete control sorry about the pun.
Topper is in my top 10 drummers of all time. Many drummers get this cover wrong. He’s playing the right notes on the snare instead of the high hat. It always sounded like that to me on the recording.
Terry who, Toppers the real deal. I met the other Clash members but never met Topper and I always loved his drumming and wanted to meet him the most. One day. All the best Topper.
Topper certainly stands head and shoulders above the Heroes. Reminds me of when I saw Ginger Baker playing with Hawkwind in the 80s, a totally different class.
@driss40 true I didn't see them live..but it doesn't sound great on this video..and it sounds to me like he says 'Tipper' when he introduces 'Topper'...of course I know that's not his name for fucks sake. I wish I could say the band was great ..but they're not ..so what else can you say?? I will point out again tho - GREAT TO SEE TOPPER DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST!!
I like topper better but terry is very good remember he played for black sabbath, billy idol, gen x, Hanoi rocks and Johnny thunders too he's very versatile he's like a journeyman he can play whatever but topper is definitely the best for the clash they are just different though you'd be surprised what terry can do
did he really just introduce him as 'Tipper' Nick headon..oh the shame...g'wan topper great to see him doing what he does best..shame about the band..sorry
He still rocks. When he plays it has that authentic clash sound
The most underrated drummer ever?
I've always rated Topper as the best punk drummer ever.. he had the advantage as he could already drum pretty damn well before the punk scene emerged in the mid 70's, whilst all the young souls were just learning how to hold the sticks
I think he was one of the most creative drummers ever.
Ah. Yeah.
I don't think he was ever underrated was he?
i love him
Topper didn't just dial it in, but gave it 100% -- pure genius, pure gent. A class act. Thanks!

Cam Wells Ridiculously good drummer!

The soul of the Clash, Mr Topper Headon

Wow Topper took the show to a whole new level
the amount of different styles he played with the clash was immense from punk to rock to funk he had it all in his locker top drummer top guy

After fixing a water leak in loft, this has made my day.

the tiny man puts a lot of power in his drumming
Topper Headon LEGEND!

Wow. Imagine that...What a privilege for those present!
Beautiful drumming just perfect
Heroes are a great band and they gig solidly. Gigs always packed out.
still precise as fuck
one of my all time drumming heroes!
its so good to know that Topper is playing the tubs again
he comes in and totally steals the show.
Still got it in him!
Topper’s still got that driving force. It’s such a shame Joe’s not still around.
best drummer in punk rock and one of the greatest of all time, amazing feel, dynamics, and above all, rhythm, nice raw footage
The were simply a magical live band never another gig always an event of magnitude they deserve their place in the hall of fame. Toppers timing was impeccable kept them tight and in complete control sorry about the pun.
He’s still making his face and looks as he did when he was in the band...
Topper is in my top 10 drummers of all time. Many drummers get this cover wrong. He’s playing the right notes on the snare instead of the high hat. It always sounded like that to me on the recording.
Seriously, seriously, seriously, a wonderfully talented drummer, a huge part of the Clash sound....
My heart just smiled...
Mine too!!
Still sounds as good if not better than back in the day
Maravilhoso !!!!!! Topper, my heroe.
Topper proving its the drummer that makes the band!!! Bloody brilliant!!!
Terry who, Toppers the real deal. I met the other Clash members but never met Topper and I always loved his drumming and wanted to meet him the most. One day. All the best Topper.

ニッキーがいたからクラッシュが成り立ってたと言っても過言では無い
Leyenda
Sometimes I think that the Clash weren't really the Clash. Who were they though?
Nick Headon
@jaytv777
you have never seen the band play live, so how can you judge on that. And no he didn't introduce him as Tipper because that is not his name.
tip top -er!
How can this have 600 likes and 72000 views??? Should be the other way around.
@jp00349 You have issues. Even Topper refers to himself as Topper.
Topper is to good for them....
too
@truth1234567890 it;s going to be a bit difficult without Joe, unfortunately
Topper is still 10x better than Terry Chimes lol
10000 times better he's tight as a nuns snatch
I like topper better but terry is very good remember he played for black sabbath, billy idol, gen x, Hanoi rocks and Johnny thunders too he's very versatile he's like a journeyman he can play whatever but topper is definitely the best for the clash they are just different though you'd be surprised what terry can do
@truth1234567890 That'll be a job when theres no Joe???
did he really just introduce him as 'Tipper' Nick headon..oh the shame...g'wan topper great to see him doing what he does best..shame about the band..sorry
the singer/bassplayer is not playing the bass correctly on Should I stay!
The band needs a Rhythm Guitarist and Joe is not available !
Singer lacks passion.. Not ANGRY ENOUGH!!!!!
Great drumming, zero passion in the vocals or guitars.
