I find myself listening with Auro-3D / auto-matic most of the time. My surround channels (7.2.4) are much more active than with Dolby Atmos. I’ve rewatching old movies and hearing sounds I missed. I think Auro 3D is a game changer. I have a Denon x4800h
You are not alone - so many write in and tell me the same. I find myself using both AuroMatic and Dolby upmixer depending on the source and my mood. -Jon
I also bought the Denon-x4800h.Have you had any problems with it at all?I have to take mine in for an exchange as it was having handshaking problems.
@@christisdale9977I had to do a factory reset then upload the latest firmware. It’s worked fine since then
You nailed it Jon regarding Auro 3D. It’s the Auromatic up mixing (particularly with multi channel sources) that make Auro 3D stand out heads and tails above the rest. Great to see it coming on strong. Keep up the great vids as always.
For me adoption rates by brands on each is the most telling as to how well a format is doing. The outlier is standard DTS:x. While it’s adoption has been equal to Atmos, I just don’t see it used that much. My guess is that the licensing isn’t that expensive and that the prior success of DTS has caused brands to feel it was a core requirement. But no one seems to be saying dts:x has any advantage over the other immersive formats as they did in the pre-immersive days. -Jon
@@ripewave there are certain times I do like using the DTS:X algorithm, but most of the time it dumps too much into the center channel for music upmixing. That’s my biggest complaint with DTS X, and DTS:x pro.
I agree - dumping too much content to the center channel kills the experience. I am looking for an immersive experience where the stage is wide and surrounds me. Pushing to center is like going back to mono. -Jon
Wow that's a hell of a lot of research. You deserve a thumbs up for that alone! Great illustrations btw.
Glad you found the content useful. I really enjoy this type of analysis. Getting the results and seeing the trends is revealing. -Jon
I've tried everything and although I tend to bias toward DTS-based formats, Auro-3D is the runaway winner for me in terms of upmixing. It never sounds gimmicky, and lets you adjust the effect.
Auro3D Auro-Matic ionizer has a lot of fans. -Jon
I’m Auromatic (Auro-3D) all the way. Can’t listen to no other format. I’m very happy to see more adoption. With the recommended speaker configuration for Auro-3D make all the other formats sounds even better their native formats.
I hear that a lot from Auro-3D fans. I find myself switching depending on the content, but I respect those who leverage 100%. My aim is to experience them all and report my findings. I have three AV Receivers coming this week with Auri-3D support so I will be testing that capability out. -Jon
I’m looking forward to it.
Great video-Would like to see the possibility of some of these formats arriving with firmware updates. Buying a new receiver just for a format is not something most of us can afford if we already have a new receiver.
I agree. Sometimes it is possible, but the brand decides not to provide the update and requires you to purchase a new unit. Very hard for most of us. In other cases, there can be some hardware constraints. For example, DTS:x Pro requires more channels (beyond 7.1.4). There have been cases where the firmware was not designed in a manner that permits certain types of feature additions. -Jon
Hi great stats thank you!
My opinion is Dolby Atmos seems to not have but very few worthy titles, the efforts to create correct object sound placement is disappointing. Whether it's budget driven or skill level I'm not sure but it's highly spoken about across many enthusiasts hence why Auro-3d up mix can improve Alot of the titles that lack the experience of correct object management.
Gravity Diamond luxe edition ATMOS sound track... Is a Super Atmos experience a pinnacle representation on how it should be done! 😊
Thanks for the Atmos video suggestion. I should check out. True about the Atmos mixes. The engineers need to put in more of an effort. -Jon
IM excited to see more models adopting auro3D, im waithin on reviews on onkyo RZ 70 I wonder if its worth more than double the price of the RZ 50. great vid as always. Thank you
Thanks - I am aiming to bring in the new flagship models from Onkyo, Pioneer and Integra. I have the same question - does 2x the cost deliver a better experience? The TX-RZ50 tested very well. -Jon
I actually only use now DTS X and DTS NEURAL X for me I feel more inmerse and is the only one that use all my channels
Thanks for that feedback. I will need to perform more listening test with DTS Neural X to weigh in on your "more immersive" comment. I do here all my speakers with the Atmos and Auro-3D upmixers, but I recall that the DTX was different with more content being pushed to height speakers. -Jon
This is an EXCELLENT breakdown!!!!! 🎉
Thanks - I really enjoy putting together that type of video - Jon
i am very interested in auro 3D and am starting to build my setup around it. would love to see tips and tricks for good aurto 3d speaker configuration
I am starting to work with Auro Technologies. They are going to help guide me in the same way I believe you are asking for help. I can share what I learn as I go. -Jon
awesome!@@ripewave
Can you please do a list with formats listed as well. Also, it will be good to have a list in a website
Once I establish a website, I could provide that type of list and other resources for download. -Jon
DTS X Pro. .. My vote
What qualities of DTS:x Pro make it a favorite? I know the least about DTS:x Pro given the limited content and models that support. -Jon
@ripewave .. Bandwidth and dynamics in the playback. Also,.. because Jurassic Park.. haha.
And.. Dolby puts out licenses for items that have NO business having 'atmos' lables.. so its a choice against many levels.
DTS was always my fav format.. even their intro for DTS way back was coolest. Dolby just seems to be a bully with blanket tactics to corner the market.
Dont even get me started on how Dolby took ideas from Auro 3D ..etc..etc.
Nasty behind the curtain business. (From my resources)
@psyphonyxaudio
Agreed on DTS being a superior format; wish the uptake was higher.
I know its not an Audio Format, but what about including in your lists Audio Calibration Formats like Audyssey/Dirac? Thanks
Yes - but I need to have more experience with each to provide a faithful review. So far my experience is with Audyssey, Dirac, AccuEQ and Anthem ARC Genesis. I also have performed manual calibration using REW. What might be the most interesting to date is the beta testing I am performing with Joe N Tell using his “Magic Beans” - the results are impressive and may change the game. -Jon
Great work as usual Jon!
Loving the detailed info.
One thing I did notice was no HDR+ or Hybrid Log-Gamma to compare to Dolby Vision for example. I know it was mainly about audio standards but you did compare two video standards in the mix.
Yes - It seems I need to have a follow up that is just focused on video formats. I started this annual compare just with the audio formats and IMAX enhanced was there as it has its specialized DTS included. Then I added Dolby Vision last year which disrupted the focus as an "audio format" compare. -Jon
@@ripewaveIt might also be interesting to find out about the adoption of the THX Select and THX Ultra certifications. Since my speakers are THX Ultra certified, I started looking into that a little and Integra seems to be the only THX Select certified receiver that I could find on the THX site. I could be way off base on that as I haven’t had time yet to do a deep dive.
There are only two brands of AV Receivers that are THX certified - Onkyo and Integra and they share common ownership. No other brands pursue THX anymore for AV Receivers or Processors. There are more brands certifying speakers and amplifiers as THX today. -Jon
..great video, can I ask if you compare this formats with sonys 360 Spatial audio and 360 Spatial sound mapping?! Still not sure if should I go with auro 3d avr like Marantz Cinema 50(40) or with Sony 5000es line..will use it for 50/50% cinema/music, for the future, I will add to pre-out amplifayer for better stereo sound (emotiva xpa2 gen3). Thx for your opinion!
nice video Jon ! I just got the Denon avc-x6700h for 1700€ its a beast and great that it supports all these suround formats .
Certainly Denon and Marantz as the brands that are committed to supporting all the formats. The Denon x6700H provides more speaker layout options over the newer X4800H without jumping up to cost level of their flagship A1H. I think it is a good option for those who need a little bit more. Especially with the price you paid - that is a very good deal. -Jon
Great Video. I would be verry interested in a similar video about the development of Contend in the different Formats. I think nobody else is out with something like that yet.
Thanks - what other formats do you have in mind? -Jon
@@ripewave No other formats. The content (Movies, Music) which is published in the formats above.
The more sound format support, the better- I'm also ok with keeping that out of the initial cost of the unit, for those who don't want those formats (My Marantz is like that for Auro). To me, totally worth it, but I can understand the flip side for someone who this is somehow too much/complex..
I'm Hopeful that the new line from Emotiva throws in Auro and DTSX-pro
I’m with you. Nice to have all the options available and hope Emotiva adds support for DTS:x Pro and Auro-3D -Jon
Monoprice htp-1 is in stock now
Thanks for letting me know. Hopefully it stay is stock longer then a few weeks this time. -Jon
Atmos for sure, final...why?? because every single soundbar is equiped with Atmos, its compatible with ALL systems (because its object based) even headphones and earbuds on smartphones and..... Apple is supporting it with a large amount of albums on Apple Music. Music mixed in Atmos is great
Yes - Atmos is now the default standard. However, the other technologies have upmixers that produce different results that are often preferred. -Jon
Hi. Can you please segregate 5.1 and 7.1 from the rest in next episode of this series. It's not fair on brands and is counter informative to list them together with 9+.1. Those will never be able to run the advanced formats. Cheers for the video series.
I did produce a video that listed all the models which support front wide channels. Perhaps that one will help. I could include in the next update of the immersive format series as well. Thanks for the suggestion. -Jon

Heads up! Sony’s new flagship DOES have dts X Pro. It is in their literature.
It kills me when they don’t list on the webpage. I see on the Crutchfield website - I will recheck the manual. Thanks for raising -Jon
Could you add the new Nakamichi Dragon (Sound System) to your list. I'd like to know your opions on it.
Sound bars haven’t been my focus - but this one is unique and uniquely priced at almost $4,000. I am curious. -Jon
Hi John: I just received the Mighty Dragon through my front door so in a few days I will post another comment on why I think you should do your thing (advice) on this audio unit. Reviews and Ratings are through the roof right now on this. Again there are a lot of us who would love your perspective. Thanks, Hot Rod Rock - On Drag - On@@ripewave 🐉
IMAX Enhanced is a big flop as a format, so you can throw that in the trash. Auro3D is very, very limited in its use and mainly overseas on a few tracks. Maybe, if you like it, have it for Auromatic upmixing, but for native Auro3D... good luck with all that. You need Dolby Atmos and DTS: X Pro. With Pro, that cuts down on your choices by a bit. Supposedly, the Monolith HTP-1 is scheduled to get it in early 2024. Then there are newer 9.1.4 and above Denon/Marantz models with it, Trinnov Altitudes, Storm Audio, and maybe a few others.
IMAX doesn't seem to have much traction; albeit an easy add to units with DTS:x. There is a big fan base of Auro-Matic. For DTS:x Pro, you also have the new Sony models. -Jon
Th DTS pro only makes sense if you have over 11 channels minus sub. considering the vast majority of models only have processing for 7/9/11 its really not necessary. I don't care one bit about Auro 3d. it can go away lol
Have you tried Auro3D? Atomos is good but unless you have optimal setup (dedicated home Thearter to spec) Auro is a lot more forgiving and in my recent testing sounds better. I'm a fan of both immersive audio formats, and I hope companies start supporting Auro 3
d more...more options is always better for the consumer.
@@Linkone7 No i havn't tried it. i do have my layout pretty optimal with 4 in ceiling "atmos" speakers and a 7 channel base. options are good to a point but also muddies up the landscape too. i think its clear Dolby Atmos has won the object based environment and it would be simpler for consumers if most if not all new content was encoded in atmos. everytime a new format is announced it makes it that much harder for consumer-based equipment to be able to do it all.
@@3184Patrick I find many atmos tracks lacking, where expected object based sounds should occur and they are just not encoded by the engieneers. Others in the industry have conducted interviews you can explore where the sound guys explain the studio does not give them the time or money to do it correctly, which many of us notice in the final product at home.
When atmos is done right it's great, but often even the great tracks are not the entire movie and we are left wanting yet again. For me, auro3d corrects this through it's intelligent algorithm. I have tested back and forth and find data in my heights that sounds great that is absent in the atmos track.
I feel that it is best to have support for both formats. I am learning the you can get away with an Atmos speaker layout for Auro-3D making them compatible with a common speaker layout. -Jon
True statement - more formats = harder to have a system that does it all. Good thing that Auro-3D upmixing can support a Atmos speaker layout. -Jon
