It’s hard to comprehend in this age of RUclips and Instagram and Twitter, but back in the day shows like Midnight Special and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert were the only way for us to see our favorite acts perform on stage, unless we were fortunate enough to go to a concert. We’d spend hours looking at album covers or record sleeves, imagining who played what, how they moved, how they interacted. It was absolutely magical to see your favorite band actually performing live. Hard to describe that feeling
Even hard-core clubbers like me would postpone seeing live acts until later in the evening when Midnight Special was over. TV programming started competing with whoever was touring in your town.
I lived in Memphis throughout the 70s and was fortunate to see live just about every band we listened to for $7 to $15 depending on where I wanted sit (or stand) throughout the concert. Such fun, FUN times.
The Midnight Special was a great place to get a good listen or just see what the band was like live. One of the oddest things about doing these shows, all the way back to the 50s was how time constraints would some times force a band to shorten a song or speed up the tempo when compared to the album version. No matter what, Fleetwood Mac never disappointed on TV or live when you could afford the tickets...
I'm a Phish person since 1991, and I'd do *terrible* things to have 4k multi-cam vids of them from then now, let alone what I would've done for them at the time.
I went to a lot of concerts. I was making $3.65 an hour. Tickets ranged from $5-30. $50 front row. Every now and then if I had a girlfriend, I would spring for that front row. Or on impulse show up at the gate and get amazing seats for about $10. Beer was thought of as "expensive" at $1each. Because a 6 pack was $2. Or if you're struggling, I remember buying Schlitz or Black Label in the can, $1.85 for 6 pack cans, head down to the river with hackysack and accessories, meeting up with strangers to play hackysack. After a summer, some became friends. These phones aren't more fun. If you're young, reconsider the use of energy and seek outdoors. You're more likely to care about parks by getting out in nature. Without plants and trees, we are all dead. What did you imagine air comes from? What other magical creations clean our air? Better understand Real Estate Developers taking out our air supply and adding hot pavement ain't exactly a mystery. We have plenty of buildings to re-develop, land already damaged to improve. Get on the bicycle. The pedal kind. Electric bicycles with dead batteries no fun to pedal home. Pedal your own. Become a human being!!
Christy McVie is other woman...voice of an angel! Everywhere is a great song with her on lead
RIP Christy....x
RIP Christ McVee ...
Don't sleep on Christine McVie, her lead vocals are great too. Songbird is one of the finest ballads ever written.
and Oh, Daddy
This was the moment that the world was introduced to Stevie Nicks and she hasn't disappointed since and the rest is history.
"Who's gonna be on it?" I cracked up. Absolutely right gentlemen. :)
The entire self titled 1975 album that this comes from is a masterpiece.
That was hard. "We need The Midnight Special back." "Yeah! Wait, but who would they have on!" Perfect!
“We need this back, but…who’s gonna be on it?”
That was priceless. :-)
Another must see live is: Silver Springs
From their farewell concert. Stevie wrote Silver when Lyndsey left her for the final time, abandoned in Aspen. The footage is like you’ll never witness.
Yes! The Silver Springs version from “The Dance” brings tears to my eyes
Yes!
My favorite F Mac song....and that is sayi g SOMETHING!!! Finally got to see them a couple years ago. Unfortunately Lindsey wasn't with them. 😢But Mike Campbell from Tom Petty's band (get into them!!!!) took up slack on guitar and the lead singer from Crowded House did his singing proud.
@@suesebree8670 David Byrne was the lead singer for Fleetwood Mac? Wow!
@@jacqueline4514 i'm. Sorry. Neil Finn from Crowded House. I fixed that post.
The moment Fleetwood Mac arrived. The rest is history.
I knew you'd love it. That was a special performance by all of them but, my Lord Stevie! What a package ❤ Thanks guys!
RHIANNON is the horse goddess amongst other things and its like she herself possessed Stevie during this performance. This is such my jam i named my daughter Rhiannon
Thank you! Y’all got 50 years of greatness to discover. The Mac then, Stevie’s solo career.
"How the hell did the Midnight Special get canceled?"
I had the exact same thought when it got canceled.
This Midnight Special was actually an 18-minute plus performance guys. A treat for all who hasn't watched it yet. Thanks for reacting to this guy's !✌️
Who wasn't captivated by Stevie's voice!
Oh, ho! Falling in love with the 1970s Stevie Nicks, huh? She is seriously adorable. And she doesn't even blink. Well, get in line, pal, it starts way back there...
I can still remember being 15, and the night I rode my bike home from my girlfriend’s house, and settling in with some cold pizza and a coke to watch Midnight Special and seeing this performance. My first time seeing Fleetwood Mac perform live.
…and I was in.
“Who’s gonna be on it”
Lol, Truer words have never been spoken.
Stevie was/is flat out mesmerizing. Love that jazzy keyboard work by the late Christy McVie. Flat out 🔥. I think La’s in love. 😊
Damn!! This performance gives me goosebumps every single time ❤
The box set of Midnight Special, every Friday night, is worth the splurge. Each CD is best of the year from 73-78 plus bonus CD million dollar sellers. There was also Don Kirshner's Rock Concert to watch on Sat nights. Soul Train with Don Cornelius Sat afternoon and American Band Stand mix of performers with dance.
“Who’s going to be on it”? Classic😂!
And that, gentlemen, is why she’s been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame…twice. They did a 4-song set that night on the Midnight Special. Check it out!
You must see them do Silver Spring live from the Dance. It's incredible
This performance captured the "blues " sound that Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie (the key board player) had together. THIS one is on my play list daily. Her voice is still as strong and lovely today . Great reaction , keep rocking :)
Mac always rocked harder live than in the studio. The next song to try is Go your own way. Start with the studio version and then the live version from the Mirage tour in 1982. Another great song from that tour where Stevie really goes hard is Sisters of the moon.
Great performance. It's time to get to some of Christine McVie songs. "Don't Stop", "Songbird," and "Oh Daddy" are great tracks.
Oh you don’t know just how deep this rabbit hole is! Enjoy! ☮️ ❤️ 🏴
How cool! I made a comment for y'all's reaction to the studio version of this song that there were several live versions out there where Stevie just sort of goes into a chanting sort of trance and belts out the outro in such a powerful way, and THIS was def one of those, so glad you guys witnessed it!
The bass by John McVie and the lead guitar by Lindsey Buckingham is always underrated in these great hits by Fleetwood Mac.
The drive and sound help bring the vocals and vibe of the music to the forefront. They're the hot sauce on the chicken. The chicken
is really good...but you need that hot sauce to really make it extra tasty. Keep frying that chicken for us guys. Y'all got the best
Chicken Shack in town. We love what you serve, so good it would make the Colonel run and hide. keep up the great work.l
Funny coincidence re:Chicken Shack. Christine McVie's first band before she joined Fleetwood Mac was...CHICKEN SHACK!
@@Rickhorse1 Thank you for pointing that out, so I didn't have to!
wow, lindsey is most definitely not underrated. he gets a ton of cred.
Other live videos of theirs have more camera coverage of the fabulous rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood on drums and John McVie on bass! To watch how they lock in with each other on these relentless grooves is really something to see! THIS camera man couldn't bear to move off of the super close up on Nicks' face! LOL!
"MTV killed Rock and Roll" is a common sentiment. When music videos came out, shows like The Midnight Special, Soul Train, and Bandstand faded away. Live performances gave way to flashy videos and back up dancers.
Great reaction guys! Please do the live version of "Silver Springs" from the Dance. I am telling you guys its the most enthralling performance you will see.
Its based on Stevies and Lyndsay's breakup. You feel the passion and tension in that performance. Especially when she stares him down. Its epic! You wont be disappointed!
Stevie was my 1st celebrity crush as a kid in the 70’s.
I always marvel at the amazing editing and production on these MS performances. Aerosmiths performance was great as well.
Stevie nicks was the "quintessential" rock star. She was so cool and a lot of girls in my school would dress just like her. lol 😏 She had great fashion sense. And she had some incredibly strong vocal skills. I loved to see her perform, they gave some fantastic concerts. Here's another song, if interested "Fleetwood Mac - Landslide (Official Music Video)" this song was written by Stevie Nicks, and it is from their self-titled album "Fleetwood Mac" (1975). It's always fun rocking with you gents.
Thank for reaction gentlemen! One of my favorite performances to watch, she mesmerizes us all with that one.
Oh my gosh. We need it back, but who’s gonna be on it? Yep.❤️🔥
I've had the pleasure of seeing them twice 👏
The midnight special never disappointed. Great music and incredible live performances.
The term is "road hot" Fleetwood Mac had been performing this number to sold-out stadiums for over a year before they did this live on a sound stage with a controlled audience (still you can hear a lot of crew noise in the wash)
I grew up with them - and I mean the Rumors album was in heavy rotation in our house and on the radio. In 81 when Stevie went solo I bought her album, I was 11, and played it to death. I was put in vocal lessons - singing from a very young age and my teacher asked me what singers I listened to. I caught hell for Stevie Nicks (more due to a way of singing that could damage the voice than her actual voice) but even I never knew she was like this live. Next level stuff. No doubt I was simply too young to have seen a late night show like this or go to a concert to see a live performance. She and Maria McKee have a lot more in common vocally than I realized. McKee sang with a band called Lone Justice in the late 80s - and I still consider her one of THE great female singers of the 80s.
They were so freaking cool back in the day. My sister totally went out of her way to adopt this Stevie Nicks look there for a little while as a teen.
You guys: tiny little square
Stevie: big screen
Well done!
Lindsey Buckingham on guitar. Check out him, performing Big Love live. Remarkable.
So many good jams! Silver Springs, Landslide and Song Bird makes me cry.
Stevie Nicks solo concert live in Chicago is the best version this and edge of seventeen I've ever heard anyone who's never seen them is missing out
Great reaction, guys! This is my favorite performance by Stevie... she absolutely kills it.
A new Midnight Special would be great but you are so right with the comment “who would be on it?” This was a great video and reaction guys.
Just laughed my ass off at the Midnight Special question, "who's gonna be on it?" LOL!!! Thanks guys, great review on the legendary performance.
My buddys dad was a charter Capt. and took them to a bunch of east coast shows. Said they liked to party. Fun folks.
Stevie Nicks is a Queen!
I spit my tea out when you asked "Who's going to be on it?" Sad, but true.
INCREDIBLE! Thank you so much for that reaction and video!!
Ms Stevie Nicks the godmother and queen of rock & roll!! What a voice!!!
Although she was inspired to write the song by a fictional book, Rhiannon is an actual goddess in Welsh mythology. The book she read must've included certain elements of the Rhiannon lore, it shows in the lyrics. Stevie is a goddess herself, end of story.
That is a good question to ponder: if we could get the Midnight Special back, who would you put on it? I have a few ideas myself, but given the current state of music, I'm afraid of who would be put on that stage.
And what they would do.
@@senseandsensibility3636 exactly, it's actually kind of a frightening thought 😳
I went to see FM in Memphis in 1977 shortly after Rumours was released. I was an Airman going through E-school at the Naval Air Station. Needless to say it was a great experience.
I'm so glad your guys picked up on this and ran with it, right on.
Please do the Rumours album 👍
Every. Single. Track. is a stone monster.
Beyond awesome! What a great time for music!
Lots of 70s baby girls got their name from this song!
Midnight Special was on years and it was awesomeness!
I went to a taping of the Midnight Special. Large set with stages at both ends. They probably did this song two or three times and aired the best take. Stevie was a babe. And what a voice. That hair is a trip tho.
Oh goddamn you guys got the right recording and everything. Timeless song, legendary group. Loved this
midnite special was "who is gonna be on it" U got that right!!!!
I was hoping you would do the live version after the studio version, you did not disapoint.
For another jaw dropping masterpiece performance from the Midnight Special, hit "Do You Feel Like We Do" from Peter Frampton. His guitar playing is on another level, and he had great stage presence, and this is his greatest filmed performance I've ever seen.
THIS^^^^^^^^^^^
Back in the day we got our live entertainment from American Bandstand and Midnight Special. These performances were big events since we didn't have the internet.
I also remember sitting in front of the TV waiting for premiers of videos from MTV. I miss the anticipation & excitement of it all.
You are so right about The Midnight Special.
Saturday night special was like Monday night football back then it was the only time the artist or players had a coast-to-coast audience
The best video I have seen of Fleetwood Mac's Nick's/Buckingham years is the live version of I'm so Afraid live from the 1997 The Dance concert Buckingham's solo was epic. Other than that performance with big kudos to Lindsey for laying down some wicked licks my favorite years of Mac are the Peter Green/ Danny Kirwin and later the Bob Welch years.
Such great performances on midnight special
Awesome. 🎶❤️🎶
Love your live reactions 😮
Fleetwood Mac is worth a deep dive; Stevie’s performance of “Silver Springs” on their live album “The Dance” is amazing; it’s in video. Makes me cry and I still love it❤
I have been waiting for you guys to do this version! My favorite part is the end where she just cuts loose.
Such an iconic performance by Fleetwood Mac🎶 they are all spot on but Stevie's act and voice is something else. Thanks guys for reacting to this great song. You are right - who would perform on this show today and even come close to the acts back in the day??
The priestess of rock💖 lol
Since Tina Turner has the label of Queen of rock. I would have to say that Stevie is the High Priestess of Rock.
I will always think of Stevie Nick's the Queen of rock & roll because she did write own lyrics Tina was good, but people have different opinions I can respect that.
Midnight Special redux? - "Ya, but whose gonna be on it??? " Precisely gentlemen Well said. LMAO on that one. TRUTH!
I wanted to be SN when I was a kid. ❤
Think about it... we saw these bands play for $10 a show... or paid $25 and saw several bands perform. I went to the 1976 show in Des Moines Iowa and saw Fleetwood Mac and Reo Speed Wagon along with a couple of other bands... we paid $25 and spent the day rocking. I saw Heart, and AC/DC and Nazareth in concert in a baseball stadium in Davenport Iowa the year before Bon Scott passed away... if we didn't see them live... we watched them on the Midnight Special... we lived in special times for rock-n-roll.
Great question about Midnight Special guys! I love Steve Miller Band's live version of Fly Like An Eagle along with this (and Steely Dan of course). In the UK we had great live performances on OGWT (Bob Marley) and now Later...with Jools Holland (Radiohead, Oasis)
This is what I’m talking about right here. It’s important to listen to a song for the first time in studio version. That way you get the real experience of how this song is supposed to sound in high-quality. Then, when you find out that you really like this song, then you can explore all the versions of the song in the band live performances. If you do it the other way around and watch a live performance First, which is basically like listening to your dumb friends constantly posting their concert videos in awful cell phone quality. Which may turn you off from ever listening to this song again. Which I have seen many many many reactors on RUclips do. Props to you guys for doing it right. You guys also do a good job of staying away from the music videos, which can also be extremely distracting in which many reactors don’t even hear the song. Sometimes this is unavoidable, and that’s fine. and some reactors get the meaning of the song completely wrong because of what is playing on the video, because a lot of times, it’s just some music video Director doing whatever the hell he wants. However, you guys should always look at the comments after listening to a song that you like, and see if there is an awesome, music video or live performance that you guys need to check out because sometimes the videos are even better than the songs. Another reason it is important to hear a song before watching a song is the ability to use your own imagination to view the story being told by the song. If you watch somebody else’s vision of that song first, that is the only thing you will picture from then on. Obviously being present at a live concert is the best way to hear a song, but you have to actually be there live.
Absolutely love them‼️Have seen them live and also Stevie on her own live
Loved that reaction guys. I fell in love with Fleetwood Mac back in 75, the White album, this album. Great singles. I was 10 years old. Great band, I grew up as they cemented themselves in rock n roll history. This performance blew my mind as a kid. Loved midnight special. A lot of bands and performers turned up on there.
If you gentlemen are looking for some live performances from back then, there are plenty on RUclips.
The Midnight Special has its own channel and I've seen some of Don Kirshner's rock concert videos as well.
Saw them live in '76 in Chicago and they sounded amazing. Stevie wore her all-black witchy outfit ( like this) and whirled and spun on stage...Christie McVie sang "Blackbird" and you could have heard a pin drop because it was so riveting. I am glad to have memories of seeing some of these iconic bands live! But Midnight Special was the next best thing, and we are lucky these performances were captured so we can still enjoy them today. Best of all, we get to watch younger people like yourselves discover the great music of our generation! Hope your content will inspire other young people to explore & discover the best of the 60's, 70's and 80's because they have no idea what they're missing. Thanks, guys!
Heart on midnight special is also ridiculous 😉👍
Every time a I see and hear this it makes the hair stand on the back of my neck. She was just awesome as well as the rest of the band.
My favorite song by this group! I still play their CD'S in car. This is classic rock when they came in the late 70's. ❤❤❤❤
You guys are wonderful! Thank you for that
Who indeed you guys are the best!
OOPS! EVERYYYY
Beautiful and passionate thanks for playing this song from my favourite band
I love it!
Bring it back but who’s going to be on it?
It will never be the same.
This version blows the studio version out of the water.
Thank you for saying "who's gonna be on it???"
A bewitching song! Another good haunting theme tune from Fleetwood Mac is Hypnotized!
