Focusing on Slow Tight Pressure Passing from Half Guard Top (BJJ Rolling)

  • Today's video is from a recent BJJ rolling session. The session is a mixture of situational and full rolling. The big focus on the session for me and many of the students was low tight pressure passing. If you've watched my videos recently, you'll know that's been a focus of my Jiu-jitsu recently. As I'm getting older, I'm trying to slow my BJJ game down where I can, especially when I'm up against younger training partners and opponents.
    Also, I mention a mouthpiece I'm using in the video. After I used the mouthpiece, I was impressed by its comfort and its ability to stay stuck in my mouth without obstructing my breathing.

    If you'd like to get one of the mouthpieces, I show in the video then use the link below.

    As a blue belt, I often feel I do not get through someone's half guard as easily as I should, or I have problems escaping half guard. Watching you roll and struggle for lack of a better term (I realize you are not rolling at 100%) I found inspiring.

      Depends on the roll. Keep in mind some of those guys in the videos are fellow Black Belts. But yeah. I was focused on several specific options that I'm not the best with. Which in turn means I'm struggling. This is what training is about.

    Pressure passing and half-guard (top and bottom) are my favorite as a 400# giant! Love seeing your legwork which is hard to process at white. Thanks! Still trying not to be a one-trick pony and work on being more mobile with other methods.

      It's ok to be a 1 trick pony early on. Keep in mind, most good Black Belts are like 5 or 6 trick ponies.

      Completely unrelated to your comment, but where do you train? I'm "only" 300 but where I'm at the biggest people I have to train with me are still less than 3/4 my size. Sometimes it's nice to be able to slow someone down to work techniques, but I also learn lots of bad habits that likely only work because I'm so much bigger.

      @@JD2jr. I'm in Dayton, Ohio. I'd say two things that have worked for me in regards to that so far: 1) Using strength appropriately IS technique - Chewy has a great podcast on that too 2) Keep communication high with your partner but especially your coach, they'll keep you honest. My coach doesn't let me get away with unnecessary big man BJJ, or he at least names it so I'm aware for larger opponents. Keep at it tho, we'll figure it out!

    I ordered one of the mouth guards. I have a really good form fitted one already from sentinel mouthguards, but it is more expensive than the brand you promoted and I'm always looking for cheaper options to recommend to training partners that want better than the boil and bite cheap kind that don't work well at all. And everyone loves saving some dough these days, and it's always a good idea to protect your teeth especially in competition type settings (and even just hard rolls in general)

      (blue belt student here)
      Chewy's excellent to roll with because he doesn't utterly destroy us. Which he 100% can. He destroys us just enough for us to learn something. He presents problems for us to solve and teaches us as he rolls. It's educational destruction.

      @Chewjitsu  Год назад +17

      I'm not sure exactly what you mean. But I'm not trying to destroy my students. I'm training with them. And in this particular rolling session I was very focused on using a specific position. Destroying them wasn't the goal. Maybe it's not as fun to watch, but it's what makes my game better.
