How I Seal/ Install Threaded Water Pipe Fittings Line Up Boiler Pipe Fittings

  • I go over how I seal threaded water pipe fittings. I’m connecting threaded black pipe. I first clean off threads on black pipe. Next I wrap Teflon tape clockwise around threads. After the Teflon I apply a small amount of pipe dope. Now the pipe can be threaded into fitting. I am finishing the supply line off my boiler. When tightening threaded pipe, never back out the pipe, turning to the left. Once the water pipe or gas pipe rotates left, a gap breaks the seal. Therefore this pipe connection will leak. Any time pipe turned to left, take the pipe apart. Then clean up and reseal the thread.
    When tightening an airtight threaded pipe connection. Always stop before the angle you want to connect pipes. Tightening the threaded pipe connection this way allows you to tighten the pipe into the correct spot. If you over turn the threaded pipe fitting, this fitting must be removed and resealed.
    Threaded pipe connections do not need to be tighten to where it no longer can rotate. You will feel good resistance and that connection is sealed. Any kind of threaded pipe seals the same way.

    Great video. One of the only videos that shows how to work with the pipe for boilers. I need to replace a Bell & Gossett flow control valve and wasn't sure how to manage when turning one side unscrews the other. Seeing you connect to the boiler now things make sense. Do you have to cut and thread the pipe yourself or does it come like that already? Thank you!

    Weekend plumber here. This video helped answer some questions. BUT...what happens if that "one last turn" won't go all the way around again? How do you adjust? Do you remove it, re-tape and re-dope it, add more tape this time, and then try again?

    • @howtohvac3234
      @howtohvac3234  3 года назад +1

      Try to not go for the last turn. If you noticed when I was putting pipe together I stopped before where the pipe should be. Then when I connect and need to adjust angle I am still tightening. If you go until it gets stuck, yes it needs to come off and get resealed. The pipe doesn't need to be overtightened. All my connections might even make another complete turn with enough force. Yet over tightening can create a leak. Here is a video I am doing some black piping. This is my main channel where I am doing actual service calls. ruclips.net/video/P6mTdu6-iBA/видео.html

    Maybe 50 years ago as an apprentice our electric shop had a set of so called electrical dies for Rigid 1/2 to 2" stock & dies. A mechanic insisted on borrowing them to thread several pieces of schedule 40 pipe for 125# steam line. I tried to explain that only the sparkies were supposed to use them but he said that I was a no nothing first month apprentice. So he used them and had a leak, he applied the pipe dope & Teflon tape then had another leak, then another leak. Finally our chief electrician told him that the first month apprentice apparently knows more about threading steam.pipe then him.After that we painted them bright orange. Like to have a dollar for every piece of rigid conduit that I threaded.

      The does need to be tapered not just to make threads: different dies used. Mine can be used on a hand threaded or a power threader

    WRONG never use tape and pipe dope, pipe dope needs to contact the metal threads for it to work and if you use tape and pipe dope the pipe dope won't contact the metal threads on one side.

    • @Reloadeez

      Wrong, it's not a never are always answer. North Carolina office of the state fire marshal and engineering division for instance requires what the instructions on the tape used are. If tape says no dope, then no dope, if tape says may be used with dope, then it may be both. Some states, counties, and cities require that teflon tape and pipe dope be used together for plumbing pipes and natural gas lines in all residential homes. Some states, counties, and cities require use of only one.
