Homesteading is about survival and food management anything that keeps alive till the next meal is a blessing. you should breed them they are easy ,and they grow so quick ,protein supply all year round. thanks for sharing.
We actually made a ton of lemon curd the other day! Working on preserving a lot for the hot summer days :D do you have a favourite recipe? I love to try out new stuff!
Incidentally, kiwifruit is high in pectin, especially when it’s not quite ripe/ a bit firm. It’s an amazing fruit, extremely high in nutrients ( twice that of apples per 100g): plus which, per 100g has double the amount of vitamin C as an orange. Also high in Vitamins A, B1,B2, B3, E; also high in Calcium, iron, potassium…. The list goes on.
Yes it is hard, and yes it should be hard. It gets easier, but killing anything grabs you by the stomach. I think you are doing it beautifully, if that's any help - probably not 😢
I've just subscribed your your channel. This is the 3rd video of yours I've watched. You've impressed me a lot because I'm portuguese, almost 64 years old, born in Africa but living here since 1976. I also feel a disgrace what is happening to this country demography. What a lost of knowledge. I love both the coastal / oceanic areas and the countryside. In Africa I used to fish and spear-hunt almost everyday after school and only twice I had to kill a chicken and a turkey. Just in Portugal at my in-laws' I've learnt how to kill rabbits and assure it's much easier than birds. I don't know how is your level of Portuguese language, but there's a recipe called "Coelho à caçador" you should try and you don't need to process so much the rabbit, the axe is enough to chop it..."Coelho à caçador" = "Rabbit at the hunter's way". Cheers
Thank you so much for your comment! The rabbits were definitely so much easier than chickens and we’ll get some new ones soon. We do speak Portuguese in our daily life & the recipe looks like the perfect winter meal, thank you for pointing us that way!
Do you think raising your own meat gets easier? My partner and I were both former vegetarians, even vegan for a little while. He has gotten used to killing animals, but i just can't bring myself to do it (unless the animal is already injured). We get a friend to help on trade because she's comfortable using the 'broomstick method'... I told her i need to learn but I really don't wanna 😪
We are also former vegetarians/vegans. It definitely does get easier. The first time with any animal is probably the hardest. It's already gotten easier with chickens, we're sure that rabbits will be easier next time. We do it too infrequently to get 100% used to it...
You are very hard on yourselves with the slaughtering. I admire the sentiment, but if it is affecting you so deeply, you can just try buying from an ethical, humane source. I think sometimes all this (and with the PFAS) shows how hard it is to be healthy and sustainable as individuals.
Thank you for your comment! As former vegetarians, it is very important to us that we raised and killed the animals ourselves. If we can’t kill it, we can’t eat it. This way, we hold ourselves accountable and don’t overindulge in such a precious resource
@@oakolive Yes you said that in a previous video. And obviously, we all ought to know how our meals are obtained and experience it first hand. I am also just aware of how hard it is to be truly accountable.
The rabbit looks great! Definitely want to do that in the future, although I'm not looking forward to explaining that to the kids 🥲. The risk of botulism is only with non-acidic foods like vegetables, kiwis and other fruit are fine especially if you add sugar
Yeah that’ll be a bit harder as they get older. It was really important to us that there was no “pet” connection with the rabbits. To toddler, they were just there and then they weren’t. He had very little interaction with them.
It feels good to get advice from someone with kiwi in their title! With the next batch, we’ll probably experiment with drying them over our wood stove, thanks for the tip :)
Lovely to see you guys are doing well in Portugal best of luck and keep post this lovely videos thank you guys
Lovely video! The teams noises gave me anxiety though, took me a while to realize it was in the video haha.
I hear that noise in my sleep at this point 😅

That’s the plan! We wanted to see first how we would feel about them and are totally convinced now. More rabbits to come in the near future :)
You can preserve lemons, they are fantastic!

Pickled lemons are easy and fabulous

The banana and kiwi jam isn't something I've seen. Interesting. I'm glad I don't eat meat, the whole process is awful.
It tastes delicious! And yeah, it took us a while to decide if we want to eat animals again, it’s not the easiest process.

I peel, slice and dry my Kiwi fruit, it then keeps for literally months. I don't know exactly how long, because I always eat it ....

Ist auf jeden Fall in Planung! Wann es fertig ist, weiß ich nur nicht 😂
